Effect of Dividend Payment on the Market Price of Shares: A Study of Quoted Firms in Nigeria
IOSR Journal of Economics and Finance, 2014
This paper is the effect of dividend payment on the market prices of shares in Nigeria: A study of 17 quoted firms using time series on dividend per share, dividend yield and dividend payout ratio that ranges between 2000 and 2011. The model specification for the analysis of data is ordinary least squares techniques applied as panel estimation. The researchers empirical results arising from the panel least squares suggests a positive effect between market price per share and dividend per share confirming that a rise in dividend per share brings about an increase in the market price per share of quoted firms; that dividend yield does not have a significant positive effect on the market prices of shares of quoted firms in Nigeria; that there exists a direct relationship between market prices per share and dividend payout ratio of selected firms on the NSE. Further, the study revealed that significant variations exist in the movement of the share prices of the selected firms which in theory could be attributed to the forces of demand and supply while in practice could be attributed to some other exogenous and endogenous variables such as economic policies, corporate managerial decisions, psycho-social variables, political situations and institutional parameters. Thus it was concluded and recommended that, earnings remain the most significant determinant of dividend payment averagely, hence it has significant influences on the market value of public owned firms in Nigeria and the world all over. The dividend payment, dividend per share, dividend yield, dividend payout ratio and earning per share are significant in explaining the observed differences in share market prices of quoted firms in Nigeria. The government must contribute by relaxing laws that spell threat to the objectives of firms i.e. maximization of shareholders' wealth.
The Determinant of Equity Share Price and the Listed Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria
Journal of Accounting and Finance Strategy, 2019
In this study, the researcher examined the financial variables influencing the share price of listed deposit money banks in Nigeria. An ex-post facto research design was employed with the population consisting of all fifteen (15) listed deposit money banks on the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE), and a sample of twelve (12) listed deposit money banks on NSE was taken using filter criteria and judgmental sampling techniques. Secondary data used were sourced from the annual reports of the sampled banks and GTI Securities Ltd. for five years period from 2013-2017. Ordinary Least Square (OLS) was used to analyze the data. The results of the multiple regression revealed that the dividend payout ratio and price-earnings ratio have a significant positive relationship with the share price. The results also showed that dividend yield has a significant negative association with share price; the book value per share has no meaningful relationship with the share price. This study recommends that the shareholders in the deposit money banks should be guided by industry financial ratios, especially the profitability measures of price-earnings ratio and dividend payout ratio, as they are critical factors in predicting share price behavior.
Equity Price Influencing Factors of Financial Sector Firms in Nigeria
Arguments have abounded in what really influence the prices of equities. From the point of the efficient market hypothesis claim that only market fundamental factors are priced into stock to other lines of arguments that even microeconomic variables and psychological factors affects stock prices have continued to generate interest. For a developing country like Nigeria, the effectiveness of some of the factors identified in literature are even less certain. This study specifically targeted listed firms in the financial sector of the Nigerian stock exchange to examine the influencing power of key accounting and macroeconomic variables on stock prices. Out of the fifty eight (58) listed financial sector firms a sample of forty five (45) where purposefully selected based on the availability of monthly data for the period of year 2010 to 2015. The data were analysed using random effect based regression model based on the suggestion of Hausman test. The result of the analysis shows that all the variables, vis-à-vis earnings per share, price earnings ratio, market capitalization, oil price and exchange rate are significant determinants of stock price except for liquidity. Specifically, factors such as oil price and exchange rate all have negative influence on equity price. This implies that on a specific note, macroeconomic polies of the federal government is not in favor of the stock market. It is recommended that government must pursue a stable policy that will help stabilize the exchange rate. This will keep the performance of the market stable and in courage more stability of prices in the market.
Reaction_of_Share_Prices_to_Dividend_Policy_of_Non_Financial_Firms_in_Nigeria_A_Panel_Data_Approach
Copernican Journal of Finance & Accounting, 2022
The study analyzed how share prices react to dividend policies of non-financial firms in Nigeria. Data were collected from a sample of 31 non-financial firms using an ex post facto research design from 2013 to 2019, resulting in 217 firm-specific observations. Descriptive statistics, diagnostic tests, and inferential statistics were used as statistical tools of analysis. Results revealed that dividend per share positively and significantly affects share prices of sampled firms. This finding affirms Gordon's bird in hand theory that share prices are affected by dividend. Dividend payout ratio, dividend yield, firm, size and firm age do not have significant effect on share prices of sampled firms. Consequently, the study recommends that firms should ensure that a good dividend policy is implemented and that dividend per share policies are maintained, as this has been empirically demonstrated to influence share prices.

International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences, 2021
This study empirically investigated the impact of Dividend Policy on Share Price of Firms Listed on ICT Sector of Nigerian Stock Exchange. In order to determine the relationship between dividend policy and share price of firms, dividend policy key proxy variables were used in the study, namely; Dividend Payout (DPO), Dividend Per Share (DPS) and Dividend Yield (DY) while Share Price (SP) on the other hand was measured using Market Price of Shares (MPS). Three hypotheses were formulated to guide the investigation and the statistical test of parameter estimates was conducted using OLS Model operated with STATA 15. Ex Post Facto Design was adopted and data for the study were obtained from the Nigerian Stock Exchange Factbook and Annual Reports and Accounts of listed ICT firms in Nigeria spanning from 2016-2020. The findings generally indicate that Dividend Payout, Dividend Per Share & Dividend Yield have exerted significant and positive impact on Firms Share Price at 1% significant level. Based on this, the study concludes that dividend policy is capable of influencing firms' share prices in Nigeria. By this implication, the study supports the relevant theories of dividend policy reviewed in this study as irrelevant theories of dividends do not hold in the case of Nigeria. The study recommends among others that firms' willing to maximize share price should consistently increase their dividend payment as this sends signal to the investors about the firm's market performance and financial health.

African Journal of Management Research, 2019

The population of the study consists of six (6) listed conglomerate firms on the Nigerian Stock Exchange as at 31/12/2016. All the listed conglomerate firms were used due to small sample size. Secondary data were collected from the sampled firms via their published audited financial statements for 10 years, ranging from 2007 to 2016. Multiple regression was used to analyze the data. The results show that dividend yield has a positive and significant effect on share prices of the listed conglomerate firms in Nigeria, while earnings yield has a negative and significant effect on share prices of the listed conglomerate firms in Nigeria. However, dividend payout ratio has a negative insignificant effect on share prices of listed conglomerate firm in Nigeria. Based on the findings, the study concludes that the dividend policy has a significant effect on share price. The study, therefore, recommends that firms should adopt a policy of consistent dividends paid to shareholders as it will attract investors to increase their investment by way of buying more of the company's stock. This is because investors see a firm that pays a high dividend as evidence of the company's financial strength and well-being and concludes that management has positive expectations for future earnings which makes the stock more attractive.
Determinants of Share Price Movement in Nigeria -The Management Perspective
International Journal of Business, Economics and Management, 2015
The study is motivated by the desire to investigate the determinants of share price movement given its fluctuation and oscillation over time. The study made use of secondary data sourced from the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) for period between 1991 and 2013. Using an appropriate analytical tool such as the ordinary least square (OLS) research technique; our study revealed that none of the selected factors have impacted positively on foreign portfolio investment in Nigeria except for market capitalization that was positive and statistically significant as well. Therefore, the study recommended that the ongoing reform in the Nigerian capital market be sustained, especially in the area of investors' protection and confidence, infrastructural development, and accounting disclosure requirements.
