A Study on the Preferred Learning Styles of Students
According to the school of learning styles, each and every individual is a unique learner. So there is a need to know the preferred learning styles of students. This study aims on three learning styles of students, auditory, visual and kinesthetic. The methodology employed for the study was survey method. To attain the objectives of the study O'Brien's (1985) Learning channel preference questionnaire was administered to 200 ninth standard school students in Chennai. The present study is an attempt to find out the relationship between preferred learning style of students to certain demographic variables like medium of instruction, gender, types of institution and father's educational qualification. To find the learning style preferences in relation to sex, medium of instruction, father's educational qualification and type of institution t-test and F-test was employed. The findings show that the most preferred learning style of students is visual and kinesthetic learning style
Objective-The aim of this study is to determine the learning mode preferences of undergraduate medical students of Moti Lal Nehru Medical College, Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. Methodology–This study was conducted among 140 undergraduate medical students. A validated VARK questionnaire was used to determine the learning mode preference of these students. The questionnaire consisted of 16 items to analyze the classification of learning mode preference as-Visual, Auditory, Read/ Write, Kinesthetic (VARK) or combination of these. Descriptive analysis was used to identify the learning mode preference of the participants. Results –The analysis showed that 55% participants preferred multimodal learning as compared to 45% who were found to be unimodal learners. Among the unimodal kinesthetic (K) learners were maximum and among the multimodal learnersquad-modal (VARK) outnumbered the rest. Cumulative analysis of these learning modes further shows the predominance of kinesthetic learning followed the rest. Conclusion – This study points to a varied preference of learning modality among the students. This shows that the teaching and learning methodology should be such that it caters to all type of learners. Based on the higher preference of kinesthetic learning among the study participants it should be incorporated in the teaching learning activities for the benefit of the students. Also the students should be encouraged to be receptive to other methods as well.

Male to female ratio was 1:6.65. Most preferred individual VARK learning style was kinesthetic(95.47%) followed by auditory(80.40%), visual(70.85%) and reading/writing(57.28%). Multi-modal learning style was preferred by 98.5% with Tri-modal as the most preferred combination comprising of 51.26% followed by Quad-modal 27.14% and Bi-modal 20.10%. Most prevalent Tri-modal combination among study group was KA V (Kinesthetic-Auditory-Visual) with frequency of 50.98%. Uni-modal was the least preferred style of learning comprising of 1.5%. No statistically significant diff erence of learning style was found between men and women (p=0.195). Kinesthetic was found to be the most preferred individual VARK style with mean score of 6.51±2.47. Conclusion: Majority of medical students irrespective of gender prefer to learn through using all sensory modalities. Bett er understanding of learning characteristics of students necessitates modifi cations in teaching strategies. Using multisensory approach of teaching through use of active learning strategies helps in bett er understanding and eff ective learning to take place.
Learning Style Preferences of Undergraduate Medical Students: A VARK Profile
Scholars International Journal of Biochemistry
Every student has different learning style and if the method of information delivered conforms to their learning habits, they learn better. To get best out of a student, facilitator needs to understand the student's learning modalities and 'tailor instruction' in such a way that students appreciate and follow it to learning. In this regard a study was designed to analyze the learning style distribution among 1st year MBBS students. A cross sectional questionnaire based study was conducted among 1 st year MBBS students (n=152) using validated VARK questionnaire (version 7.8).The questionnaire consists of 16 questions with 4 options, each of which corresponds to a particular sensory modality preference (visual, aural, read/write and kinesthetic). The responses in the questionnaires were assessed according to the keys provided in VARK guide. Demographic details were collected. Preferred learning styles were expressed as frequency and percentage. The response rate was 86.18% (131 students out of 152). Of these 71 (54.2%) were female and 60 (48.8%) were males. All the students preferred more than one sensory modality with 98% quad modal (n=129, M/F=59/70) and near 1% each in tri modal (n=1, M/F=1/0) and bimodal (n=1, M/F=0/1) learning preference. Knowing student's preferred learning modes; one can focus on developing strategies that are tailored for individuals. All the students in the present study showed multimodal learning styles which points towards the fact that they prefer information to arrive in a variety of modes. Lectures being the major proportion of teaching learning process in 1 st MBBS curriculum, one need to adopt active learning strategies and process during lectures which will cater to the needs of all types of learners.
Exploration Of Preferred Learning Styles In Medical Education Using VARK Modal
Learning styles is a term used to refer to the methods of gathering, processing, interpreting, organizing and thinking about information. Students have different learning styles, which is the reason for the diversity seen in classrooms in regards to how students acquire information. Claxton and Murrell had divided the learning styles into the following four categories: personality models, information-processing models, social-interaction models, and instructional preferences models. VARK (an acronym for Visual, Aural, Read/write and Kinesthetic, different way of learning styles) is a learning inventory categorized into the ‘instructional preference’ modal. Many studies were done using the VARK inventory among the medical education but the preferred mode of learning was variable in different parts of the world. The relationship of age, gender and academic performance with the mode of learning was also not consistent. So this article tried to conclude the preferred mode of learning and relationship of mode of learning with gender and other factors by analyzing the previous studies done using VARK questionnaire among the medical students in daily teaching and learning environment. Pub Med and Google Scholar were used as a search engine to find the article. Altogether 20 full text research papers were retrieved and reviewed. In the most of part of the world the studies showed that multimodal learning style was the predominant one over unimodal. Further in multimodal quadmodal was the most preferred one followed by other presentation. In the unimodal presentation most preferred one is kinesthetic type of learning along with visual, aural and read write in less extent. Age factors had no lucid relationship with the learning style though some variations were observed with age. This review was expected to be useful as scientific evidence in the field of medical education and also as a reference for further research.
