Pilot Study on Grow out Culture of Sandfish (Holothuria scabra) in Bottom set Sea Cages in Lagoon

Although mariculture is relatively new to the Maldives, sandfish culture has been practiced in the country for a little over a decade. Currently sandfish grow-out in pens is being carried out by island communities on a limited scale. Two studies were carried out in the lagoon of Maniyafushi Island, Kaafu Atoll, to determine the growth and survival of hatchery-produced juvenile sandfish cultured in bottom-set cages in lagoon in order to assess the potential use of such cages in small scale sandfish grow-out operations. The initial study, which was discontinued when an extreme weather event damaged the cages, was designed to determine the effects of two stocking densities and two feeding frequencies on the growth and survival of sandfish cultured in bottom-set cages in lagoon. Juvenile sandfish with a mean body weight of 2.12g were first nursed in land-based tanks for 2 months at a stocking density of 100 individuals m-2 until they attained a mean weight of 11.43g. The juveniles were then randomly assigned to 4 treatments and their replicates. The second study was conducted to assess the growth and survival of sandfish in bottom-set cages in the lagoon without varying stocking density and feeding frequency. In both studies feed was introduced in each experimental cage at the rate of 3% of the total sea cucumber biomass in the cage. Results of the second study showed that the survival was high; mean survival was 97.14%. At the end of the 124 day culture period the animals reached a mean body weight of 147.05g and yielded an average biomass of 1424.64 gm-2. The specific growth rate for the culture period was 1.58% day-1. Based on the growth and survival of sandfish in bottom-set cages used in the second study and the performances of sandfish in other culture systems, it can be concluded that bottom-set cage is a suitable culture system for small scale grow-out of sandfish with feed inputs, particularly for early stages of grow-out. This type of cage can also be used for nursing smaller juveniles in the sea before putting them in sea pens for further growing. Further studies are needed to determine the most suitable cage size and materials, stocking density, culture period and scale of grow-out operation. Pen, bottom-set cage and off bottom cage can be used in different environmental conditions of the lagoons. These culture systems have the potential for widening sea cucumber grow-out in the country.

The overfishing of the sandfish Holothuria scabra is increasing due to its various benefits, thus reducing its population in nature. This study aimed to examine sandfish's length-weight relationship and condition factors on the North Coast of Sumbawa Island, with sampling locations at two stations, Ai Limung (Pungkit Village), and Labu Prajak (Batu Bangka Village). The study was conducted in September-October 2022. A total of 142 specimens were obtained from both stations, 122 samples at Ai Limung station (mean length 9.22±2.12 cm; weight 43.34±25.07 grams). Then 20 samples at the Labu Prajak station (mean length 13.69±3.74 cm; weight 88.70±60.06 grams). Growth patterns of each research station are negative allometric, indicating the body length of the sandfish grows faster than its weight. The US Affiliated Pacific Islands of Micronesia have several commercially important species of sea cucumbers in their water including the sandfish sea cucumbers, Holothuria scabra. Due to their commercial importance, they have been widely exploited and are in the danger of being extinct. The College of Micronesia Land Grant Program has undertaken the development of hatchery-based sandfish sea cucumber farming technology for local community based economic development, future commercialization, and restocking the depleted stocks in the wild. Field trials were conducted to determine the effects of size, grow-out period and site on the growth and survival of Holothuria scabra. Juveniles were reared in sea cages in two sites for 2 months during two different times of the year. Juveniles from Experiment 1 were subsequently grown in sea pens for 8 months in one site. The significantly lower survival particularly of the small-sized group (<0.1 g) in Pilar is likely due to reduced water and sediment quality because of proximity to fish-farming activities. The importance of grow-out period was evident in the significant differences in weight increments in all size groups and biomass in the small-sized group (P < 0.10) in Lucero during Experiment 2 when water temperature range and incidence of rainfall were higher. The decrease in the average weight of adults during the second half of the grow-out period may be due to the interplay of the reduction in salinity, onset of sexual maturity and biomass exceeding carrying capacity in the pens. The estimated biomass threshold in the sea cages and pens in Lucero were 300 g m À2 and 380 g m À2 respectively. Implications of the results on the viability of smallscale pen grow-out culture are discussed.

Food is one of the factor which is important in determine organism viability in nature. Studying various kind of food which is consumed by an organism can be used as basic data in the preservation of the organism, so that the water resources decrease at nature, because environmental degradation and capture can be overcome by cultivation. As well as other aquatic organisms that are cultivated, sea cucumber can also be cultivated. Cultivation of sand cucumbers in floating net cages based on the existing cultivation facilities with the aim of policulture cultivation to maintain sand cucumbers together with other aquatic biota such as fish. The purpose of this study is to know what types of food that exist in the hull of sea cucumbers which kept in the floating net cage with sago palm waste treatment and chicken manure. The research was conducted from August to October 2016, starting with sand sea cucumber sampling which was kept in floating net cage with treatment of sago palm waste (A), chicken manure (B) and mixture of both (C). The research was continued by analyzing the contents of the hull ofsea cucumber in the biology laboratory of Darussalam University of Ambon. The results of the research found that the food composition in the hull of sea cucumber with three treatments were dominated by the Diatom or Baccilariophyceae class of fitoplankton consisting of 113 species belonging to 35 genus.
