Contemporary Environmental Approaches to the Training in the Conservation and Restoration of Documentary Cultural Heritage

2019

One of the important tasks of academic education is through the testing of different types of practices to open up to students the opportunities to apply a series of principles and mechanisms that contribute to the realization of established views and policies. The combination of theory and practice is of utmost importance in the modern world. In this sense, the university centers in Bulgaria, which aim at providing knowledge in the field of conservation and promoting the promotion of the written cultural heritage, are becoming a new important tool for the transfer of traditional knowledge and its learning by different generations.Priorities and contemporary environmental approaches to teaching the discipline are outlined “Conservation and Restoration of Documents", in line with the European achievements for better competencies and validating UniBIT as a major national, educational and research institution, and turning it into an integral part of the European educational and sc...

2008

This book presents the contributions to the workshop that took place at the University of Genoa, Faculty of Architecture, on October 2007, as a new start for the thematic subnetwork on Conservation, within EAAE and ENHSA. The workshop was the occasion to bring together educators in conservation, from various European Schools of Architecture, in order to:

Research Advances for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage: Book of abstracts

2012

The European Cultural Heritage is an invaluable legacy. Europe's cultural heritage is the product of many cultures that have contributed over centuries to its development. We recognise the potential for the cultural heritage to play a proactive role in enriching and enhancing quality of life, in delivering answers to basic questions about our historic origins, in providing solutions to environmental and construction-related problems, and in interacting with other internal social, economic and political drivers.

Current Studies and Approaches in the Field of Cultural Heritage Conservation Science. Harmonising the Terminology in an Interdisciplinary Context

2016

During the last years, both the problem of harmonizing the specific terminology of Conservation Science and the modern approach related to the scientific investigation, preservation, restoration, display, and treasuring of cultural heritage assets have been frequently addressed at prominent events and meetings in the field. With this in mind, this paper addresses some aspects concerning the nomenclature employed in the field of Conservation Science, as it has emerged from its use in interdisciplinary contexts. The paper also advances a series of considerations made by our research team, such as: heritage elements and functions, routes of the cultural assets with their historical context, the role of scientific investigation in valorisation of old artefacts, and current nomenclature of the specific professions in the field of Conservation Science.

Professional interdisciplinary position and role of academic conservator-restorers in theory and practice

Conservation Ethics Today, 2018

The conference is focused on the relationships between theory and practice of conservation-restoration in the field of heritage preservation, considering the positions and developments of the 20th Century for the challenges of the 21th Century. Particular attention is directed to architectural heritage, its surroundings and its fittings, such as architectural surfaces and wall paintings, stuccos, decorative elements in stone, majolica, ceramic etc. Contributes and discussions tackle with experience and perspectives of conservation-restoration especially in European heritage preservation. This is due to the conference’s involvement into the EYCH European Year of Cultural Heritage program 2018. A critical look from outside Europe is welcomed and expected to provide important input and fresh perceptions. Ethics of conservation concern the issue of relationship between objects and actors, i.e. between our heritage and the professionals dealing with heritage preservation. Ethical principles as basis for developing appropriate methods and techniques of conservationrestoration are required. These applied ethics are closely connected with the professional ethics of conservator-restorers and of all other specialists involved in the preservation of architectural heritage. The conference will pay attention to improve interdisciplinary cooperation between conservator-restorers, architects, craftsmen, art historians, building archaeologists, conservation scientists and all others active in this field. With reference to every day practice, the debate will deal with the specific professional profiles and tasks of all these specialists and try to increase the quality of communication and co-operation.

An initial tale Let me start this short contribution, in form of public reflection and not as an academic lecture, with two sentences that I always found very interesting and challenging for all those who work in the field of Conservation of our Cultural-and especially built-Heritage. The first one is a citation from the book "Ruins" written by the French sociologist Marc Augé and it throws a strong ray of light upon the

Training Schools for Conservation of Cultural Heritage: Between Expertise, Management and Education

Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 2016

Training schools make an important feature of the European research landscape, fostering exchange in frontier research, and building basis for further research and development. How the cross-area, management and educational issues can be effectively put together in training schools, and specifically, for the benefit of a multi-and interdisciplinary field of conservation of cultural built heritage? This paper showcases the experience from the first lessons of the COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) Action i2MHB (Innovation in Intelligent Management of Heritage Buildings), to examine and suggest tools useful for further multidisciplinary synergies and networks in this and other frameworks.

The Origins of the Postgraduate Programs on Cultural Heritage Knowledge, Management, Conservation, and Communication in Italy: A Vision of the Past as Engine for the Next Future

Heritage

A discriminating, multi-disciplinary knowledge is a necessary expertise that all the actors who operate in the management, conservation, and communication of Cultural Heritage (CH) must have. They are, therefore, expected to be seriously prepared in many fields. However, a proper training program for them, which effectively combines humanistic studies with scientific ones, is difficult to be arranged when there is lack of comprehensive perspective in the education system. This paper introduces the experiences of the postgraduate programs that were established for many years at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, Italy. Through a calibrated mixture of theoretical background and practical applications taught by high-profile scholars, those programs proved to be effective in the preparation of figures later dealing with the CH at different levels. The clear organization of those specialized lectures, the innovation introduced with hands-on practical case studies and the adoption of s...

Interdisciplinary Studies in Cultural and Environmental Heritage: History, Protection, Valorization, Management

2018

An overview of the various and numerous themes relating to cultural and environmental heritage gathered together in one article represents, at an international level, a rare peculiarity. As a result of the research and teaching activities carried out over the decades at the Universities of Rome, Tuscia (Viterbo) and Bologna, integrated with the fundamental relationship and involvement of the Cultural and Productive Units scattered throughout the territory, I was led to synthetically describing, insofar as was possible, the different problems that involve the various scientific areas of a historical, technical, economic, managerial nature, within the context of interdisciplinarity and in respect of the holistic value of cultural heritage.
