Abstract

The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to improve understanding of heterosexual emerging adult (18-24 year old) FET college students' perceptions of the social and cultural issues that affect their sexual decision-making (with reference to unprotected sex; sex without a condom and multiple sexual partners). There is a paucity of research in the area of FET student sexual behaviour, particularly in an era of HIV epidemic. Therefore, this study attempts to bridge this gap. This study sought to answer the following research question: To what extent do social and cultural factors influence sexual decision-making and sexual practices among FET students? Four focus-group discussions with emerging adult students aged (18-24) years, representing both male and female students on 8 campuses of a particular college, were conducted.
