Pleistocene Submarine Groundwater Discharge Along the Atlantic Continental Shelf, New England: The Role of Ice Sheets (original) (raw)

2008

Abstract

Well bores have long shown that relatively fresh groundwater exists far offshore beneath the Atlantic continental shelves of North and South America. This freshwater was emplaced during Pleistocene sea-level low stands when the shelf was exposed to meteoric recharge and parts were over-run by the Laurentide Ice Sheet. Details of the emplacement mechanism of the fresh water remain poorly understood.
