Contemporary lighting solutions in the historic urban landscape: Project-oriented approach
Proceedings of the 5th IPMA SENET Project Management Conference (SENET 2019), 2019
Integration of sustainable project management into small business practices is seldom examined in architectural lighting design. One of the major elements of the sustainability of urban ambience entities and preservation of social, architectural and urban values is lighting phenomenon. Its significance is reflected in the aesthetic, as well as the functional qualities of safety and amenity for users. Usually, keeping the traditional types of luminaries (i.e. lanterns) in order to preserve ambience values lies in contradiction with the contemporary requirements, mostly because of the obsolete structural support which normally yields the application of the obsolete lighting technology. On the other hand, the introduction of contemporary luminaries in the urban areas of cultural and historical significance is often undesirable. Thus, the issue of sustainability of the historical urban ambiance entities in the context of the application of the contemporary lighting technical solutions is presented in this paper from the point of view of a project-oriented small organization, which holds in core business the philosophy of the confirmation of the existing lighting fittings to the users' space. This paper proposes and confirms business model which assures preservation of architectural ambient, with added value of the energy efficiency, functionality, life cycle savings, safety and amenity for the users, through the case study of Park vojvode Bojovica in Belgrade, Serbia by experimental collecting of model inputs, whereas the obtained results are verified by means of numeric simulation. Results of this case study make contributions to the domain of management of sustainable projects in area of architectural lighting design while exploring broader social context.
Urban nightscapes and lighting master plans. Case study of Liepāja
Landscape Architecture and Art, 2022
Development of modern technologies and urbanisation enable cities to provide a broad range of services even at night, which means that the nightscape is becoming more used. The goal of the study is to develop recommendations for planning the night-time outdoor space and its elements in an urban environment, with a view to improve the functional and aesthetic quality of the city, and to reduce light pollution. To achieve this goal, the authors studied theoretical materials, analysed the experience of three cities in developing lighting plans, conducted field research and made photographic records to assess various areas, compiling and creating a visual representation of the results. The city-level focus in solving night-time cityscape problems is on the drafting of lighting master plans. Using such plans, one can spur tourism and economic growth, and improve the quality of life among the locals. On the level of the city, elements such as edges, neighbourhoods, roads, landmarks, viewpoints and nodes play an important role at night. One has to identify these elements and highlight them based on the recommendations developed. The proposed development of a Liepāja city lighting plan would strengthen the city's identity, improve the safety of the night-time use of outdoor spaces, facilitate navigation, and create aesthetically pleasing views. Furthermore, this is an opportunity to reduce light pollution and transition to sustainable solutions through the use of various smart technologies associated with lighting.
People’s Perception of Urban Lighting in Public Space
The majority of the world’s population lives in and around urban centers. In order to enhance the quality of life in the city, architects, urban planners and designers include a variety of aesthetic and functional aspects. Appropriate lighting is one of those aspects that can provide significant benefits by enhancing the aesthetic value and perception of the urban environment. This research is an effort to establish new perspectives in urban lighting design by identifying people’s preferences in urban lighting through an exploratory research. It defines the urban lighting design as a discipline that aims at improving the quality of urban space for the users which is missing because of the lack of exploration of and in accordance with the preferences of people. It aims to focus on the preferences of people in urban lighting for a critical analysis of the existing urban lighting design discourse. It is to find out the people’s evaluation of urban lighting and what are the perceived attributes that elicit certain emotional reactions: preference, interest, comfort and safety. Based on questionnaire survey in the city of Pune as case study it will examine the relationship between the perceived attributes of lighting and emotional appraisals, and find out the variables of lighting which are salient to the users for preferring and disliking a lit urban scene. This is aimed to help architects, urban designers in identification of new variables and understanding their importance of them for people, and in turn, present urban lighting designs which have good public appeal.

Light is a primary element in the field of architec ture and urban design. Solid volumes and enclosed s paces, color and texture can only be appreciated fully when they are imaginatively lit, and a skilful designer will use lighting in subtle ways to reveal the elements and also the buildings. Reaching a suitable solution for Lighting in urban spaces, a process is needed which can encompass all different aspects in the field of lighting. In this way, we used the ava ilable data-bases for evaluating different aspects of urban spaces, by taking into account the situation measurement and availabl e evaluations. For context-oriented urban spaces vi a Space Syntax we used Integration parameter (local and global). By s tudying the organizer structure and its prioritizin g, we could achieve the lighting originated from the context. In this paper, based on the historical importance o f Isfahan city, its historical fabric would be cons idered. The Research method here is Analytic-descriptive...
A Critical Analysis of Lighting and llumination of the Central District of Tehran
Anuário do Instituto de Geociências - UFRJ, 2017
This article tries to survey and criticize the quality of lighting and illumination in the central district of Tehran, by comparing it to standard codes. Findings report that the traffic lighting is standard, but illumination of sidewalks and pedestrian areas and cycle paths has many problems. Most of the important buildings of the district are not illuminated properly and lighting them according to their masses and architectural features is needed. In conclusion it has been resulted that there is a distinct need to a master plan for public lighting which, apart from defining general concepts, often put forward designs for specific urban districts and unifies light design in them.

Importance of the color of light for the illumination of urban squares
Color Research & Application, 2019
The objective of this article was to establish the significance of parameters relevant for urban square illumination, particularly those related with the color of light. Performed using a questionnaire and with 154 architecture students as respondents, the survey showed that the 18 parameters can be divided into two groups. The first group of 13 parameters refers to the overall impression, influencing the basic and most important lighting aims like safety, security, orientation, visual comfort, and amenity, whereas the second group includes parameters related to lighting features which may negatively influence the overall impression. The four parameters directly linked to the color of light were evaluated lower than expected, indicating that architecture students were probably translating their attitude toward color in architecture to color of light, thus underestimating this lighting parameter. The survey results also showed that female respondents are more sensitive to parameters, which affect safety and security.
