Institutional Support and Collection Development Practices in Private University Libraries in South-West Nigeria

This study sought to investigate the institutional support employed for collection development practices in Private University Libraries in South-West Nigeria. This study adopted the qualitative research design. The population comprised 57 key informants made up of heads of the libraries and acquisition librarians from 31 Private University libraries. The total enumeration technique was used for the study. A Key Informant Interview was the instrument used for data collection. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Findings revealed that institutional support had an impact on collection development practices. The predominant institutional support received was the prompt release of the library\u27s budget allocation during accreditation, regular salary payment, and provision of work-related infrastructural facilities. The Relevance of Collection Development Policy in the Collection Development of Maranatha University College and Ghana Christian University College Libraries

The study was conducted to determine the relevance of collection development policies in some private academic libraries in Ghana with Maranatha University College and Ghana Christian University College as the case study. The study adopted a case study design and used a qualitative method in its examinations. A self-designed interview schedule was used to solicit information from the staff in the two libraries. The study participants included two (2) head librarians who are all professionals and four (4) para-professional librarians. The face-to-face interview method was employed as a data collection instrument for this study– content analysis was used to analyse the data. This study assesses the Acquisition and Collection Development Activities in academic Libraries in Nigeria with attention on the experiences of Joseph Ayo Babalola University Library, Ikeji Arakeji. Six research questions steered the study. An Assessment Survey Design was espoused in carrying out the study. The total population for this study was three hundred and sixty-seven (367) respondents comprising of lecturers, students, library and administrative staff of the university and other users of the library. The major instrument for data collection was questionnaire. Three hundred and sixty-seven copies of questionnaires were disseminated to respondents, out of which three hundred and thirty-five copies were returned, representing 90.3%. Collection Development Practices in Academic Libraries in Ghana: The Case of Ghana Communication Technology University Library

This study was conducted to ascertain the collection development practices at Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) Library. The study set out to find out if there exists a collection development policy at GCTU library. The population of the study was grouped into two main categories, namely users of the library and the library staff. In the selection of students, the simple random sampling technique was used to select the participants. The general population for library staff was used. The sample size of the student participants was 226 comprising 120 male, 106 female students, and 16 library staff. Data for the study was collected through questionnaire and interviews. The SPSS was used to analyze the questionnaire and content analysis used to analyse the interviews. The findings revealed that the GCTU library has a collection development policy even though it does not guide selection so much. Findings again indicated that the library has both print and electronic resource for its users, as well as 24-hour internet services but it is not too stable. It was recommended that the supply of internet to the library should be improved to aid the access to the library's e-resources.

Effective use of Collection Development Policy in Academic Libraries: A Case Study of Ghana Technology University College, Accra Campus

The Ghana Technology University College Library (GTUCL), Accra-Campus, was the setting of the study. The study was conducted to determine the effective use of collection development policies in Academic Libraries. The study adopted a case study design and used a qualitative method in its investigations. A self-designed interview schedule was used to solicit information from all the staff in GTUCL-two (2) professional and three (3) para-professional librarians. Data collected was analysed using content analysis. The interviews were audio-taped and then transcribed based on the major themes. The findings showed that the GTUCL has a collection development policy; however, the policy has not been reviewed since it was written nine (9) years ago. Recommendations to review the policy included the use of the policy in all selection processes as well as the involvement of all library staff and stakeholders in selection activities.

Effects of Donations on the Collection Development of Private Academic Libraries in Ghana: A Case Study of Central University

This study was conducted to ascertain the trends of donations to private academic libraries in Ghana and how these donations have affected the collection development and service delivery of the library. The population of the study comprised of one (1) librarian and two (2) assistant librarians from the Central University library. A qualitative research design was employed to collect data for the study, and the data were thematically analyzed. Findings indicated that the majority of private academic libraries hardly received any substantial donations due to lack of partnership with any donor institutions and they also did not take the initiative to look for donors.

Collection Development Variables and Use of Library Materials in Academic Libraries in South-South Geo-political Zone of Nigeria

This study investigated the "relationship between collection development variables and use of library materials in academic libraries, in South-South, Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of this study, three research questions were raised, and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study". Literatures related to the variables under study were reviewed; accordingly, the design for this study was ex-post facto design with a total population of 16620 students with a total of 800 as the sample for the study. This was done with the help of stratified and purposive random sampling techniques. The questionnaire titled: Collection Development Variables and Use of Library Materials in Academic Libraries Questionnaire (CDVULMALQ) was the instrument used for data collection. The instrument was validated by two experts in measurement and evaluation. The reliability of the instrument was established through the spilt-half method. A trial test gave reliability estimates of 069 to 086, and the hypotheses were tested at a .05 level of significance using Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Analysis. The results of the analysis revealed a significant relationship between acquisition, weeding, and preservation of library collection and the use of library materials. Based on the findings, it was recommended, among others, that: Government should pay more attention to funding and acquisition of library materials for academic libraries.

This study investigated the relationship between collection development variables, and utilization of information resources in university libraries, south-south, Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of this study, two research questions were raised and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Ex-post facto research design was adopted for the study. The study examined ownership, gender and experience as correlates of policy implementation in the management of Universities Libraries in South-South, Nigeria. The correlational survey design was adopted for the study. Three (3) research questions and three (3) hypotheses guided the study. The population of the study was 1,465 which comprised 12 university librarians from the 12 State and Federal Universities in South-South, 263 other professional librarians and 1,200 year 3 students who are regular library users in the universities. The sample for the study was 385 respondents which consisted of 12 university librarians from the twelve universities, 263 other professional librarians and 120 years 3 students. , in terms of availability of funds, currency, and quantity of the materials available for the benefit of all their users. Four objectives and four research questions guided the study. A survey study was conducted and a questionnaire was administered to sixty (60) staff of the libraries. The population of the study comprised of 60 academic librarians from the three academic libraries under study. Descriptive statistics was used for data analysis. The results revealed that the academic libraries under study were underfunded which is affecting their services/operations output to their users; the major users of the libraries under study are staff and students; most of their collections were not relevant for teaching, learning and research activities.
