Information on the Prevalence and Extent of Alcohol Abuse Among Commercial Tricycle Operators in Calabar

This study examines the prevalence and extent of Alcohol abuse among commercial tricycle operators in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. Adopting a descriptive quantitative research method, data was collected from 385 participants from 6424 registered tricycle operators in Calabar using a questionnaire. The participants were selected using the convenience and random sampling technique. Data collected from the field were subjected to descriptive statistics. Out of the 385 distributed instruments, 383 were returned and used for data analysis. Alcohol use and compliance with road safety rules among commercial motorcyclists in Southwest Nigeria

Alcohol has been identified as one of the major causes of traffic accident as those driving under the influence of alcohol barely comply with road safety rules and regulations. This study investigated the influence of alcohol use on compliance with road safety rules among commercial motorcyclists in Southwest Nigeria. Cross sectional descriptive research of the survey type was used to conduct the study. The sample size comprised 660 registered commercial motorcyclists selected through multi stage sampling techniques. A self-developed and validated questionnaire was used to elicit information from the respondents. Alcohol Consumption and Road Rage among Commercial Tricycle Riders in South-South, Nigeria

This study examines the relationship between alcohol consumption and road rage experience among commercial tricycle riders in south-south Nigeria. Using expectancy theory of motivation as theoretical framework, a sample of 360 subjects was selected in a multi-stage sampling technique utilizing a structured questionnaire to elicit information about socio-demographic variables, alcohol consumption and road rage. Descriptive statistics and multiple regressions were used as method of data analysis at 0.01 and 0.05 significance level. The results showed that commercial tricycle riders were dominated by males and those who had attained secondary school education. It was further revealed that respondents consumed palm wine, spirit, beer, Goldberger, Gulder, stout, wine and Ogogoro at least once in a week. Commercial Cyclists (Okada Riders) and Alcohol Related Problems in Delta State, Nigeria

Driving under the influence of alcohol has been identified in past studies and reports as the major cause of road accidents and other public health issues. Commercial cyclists (popularly known as okada riders in Nigeria) pose a great danger to the public in most part of Nigeria because of their reckless riding behaviours. This study therefore examined the prevalence and problems of drinking among okada riders in Delta State, Nigeria. It is a cross sectional study of 250 okada riders across Delta State. Two sets of scales were used to collect data from the various parks. The AUDIT scale was used to establish the prevalence of alcohol drinking while the second scale teased out the problems associated with drinking. Road safety, alcohol consumption and visual function of motor bike riders in Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria

Causes of road traffic accidents (RTA) in developing nations have been attributed in part, to poor vision due to excessive alcohol consumption. This cross-sectional study assessed the visual acuity of 230 male motor-bike riders in Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria, and their potentials for alcohol abuse, using the cluster sampling technique.A semi-structured interviewer/self administered questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demographic characteristics, road traffic accidents and alcohol use, while visual acuity was assessed with a Snellens chart. Results showed good right and left eye vision among 68.3% and 71.3% of the riders respectively, but visual impairment was observed among 25.2% (right) and 26.5% (left) of the riders, and the impairment was severe among 6.5% (right) and 2.2% (left) of them.
