SPYROS PAVLIDES, Professor of Neotectonics and Palaeoseismology, Department of Geology, former Dean of the Faculty of Science, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Hellas This talk is divided into two parts. The first part outlines the "genesis" (creation) of the Aegean region (land of Greece), with a poetic, transcendent and lyrical, as well geoscientific language, based mainly on the poetry of the modern Greek Nobel Price (1979) poet Odysseous Elytis, as well it sum¬maries the very early emergence of the Greek civilization (Aegean, Cycladic, Classic, Hellenistic). The second part of the speech emphases the ancient Greek philosophy of Nature and especially the role of Water in it. "Nature" in a broader sense, is fundamental in the ancient Greek philosophy; it constitutes the creative basis of the philosophical questioning and the roots of Science. Still, it goes beyond the real¬ity perceived by our senses; it is a comprehensive term; what philosophy and science is trying to "see" beyond the surface.
A Greek Alchemical Epigram in Its Middle Byzantine Context

This article examines the dedicatory epigram of the earliest and most important witness to the Greek alchemical corpus, the tenth-century manuscript donated by Cardinal Bessarion to the Republic of Venice, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana MS gr. 299, as a window onto the cultural coordinates of the manuscript’s middle Byzantine readers. Scrutiny of the epigram’s meter, language, literary conventions, and the handwriting of the scribe who copied it into the manuscript point to a tenth-century date not only for the manuscript but also for the epigram itself and make it possible to situate the epigram, and with it the alchemical manuscript that contains it, within the mainstream of middle Byzantine elite culture.

Water is life, purification, regeneration. This gives rise to many opportunities for development. Immersion in water is a return to basics, with an outcome that generates strength and purity. The potential water are large and innovative. The Pythia, the priestess of Apollo at Delphi, drinking to Castalia fountain, in order to draw inspiration before his prophecies. Pilgrims on their way to the shrine of Delphi had to take a purifying bath in the same source, as a precondition to be able to consult the oracle. The speech will be aimed to analyze the relationship between the water and the rituals in Ancient Greece in sacred contexts as the sanctuaries of Delphi, Sounion, Brauron and Eleusis.
