Missing beats: critical media literacy pedagogy in post-secondary media production programs (original) (raw)

Neoliberal strains on post-secondary institutions put pressure on media education programs to teach uncritical technological and aesthetic industry standards as a way to ensure economic dominance through workforce training. This chapter explores the potential for critical deficits in post-secondary media production programs through disconnects between contemporary media production curricula and principles of critical pedagogy and critical media literacy. This work stems from the concern that indiscriminating approaches to media production education only serve to reproduce harmful hegemonic representations and media workplace cultures.
