Analytically - Experimental Study of Damage Tolerance of Aircraft Structures
2002
Presented in this paper are the results of the research on some actual problems on ensuring damage tolerance of the airplanes. The first problem considered is the fatigue crack growth under random spectra. The analytically experimental study of fatigue crack growth in specimens was conducted at a regular and random spectrum of loading. Generalized Willenborg model was used for the calculations of crack growth under the spectrum of transport airplane wing loading. The second problem considered is the residual strength of the stiffened structure such as skin with stringers. An effective engineering method using the R- curve of the material was proposed for analysis of the residual strength. In that case the experimental investigation of the R- curve of the material of a passenger airplane fuselage skin was conducted. The results of the analysis were compared to the experimental results, published in the literature. Also the experimental research of the residual strength in case of mul...
Composite Structures
The development and certification of aeronautical composite structures is still largely based on the pyramid of tests. This approach is extremely costly in terms of number of tests and design loops. Moreover, it is based on uniaxial tests whereas the real structures are mostly subjected to combined loadings. The aim of the collaborative research program ''VERTEX" is to progress towards Predictive Virtual Testing and to significantly reduce the development costs of aeronautical and space programs. In this first part, the specific methodology for multiaxial tests of aeronautical structures is presented. The concept of the technological specimen and its size are justified. Then, the development of a specific test rig is presented, on which compression/tension, shear, internal pressure and combinations are possible. Since structural tests are complex to instrument, a specific full-field measurement technique is developed. It is based on a multi-camera instrumentation and an original Finite Element approach to Stereo Digital Image Correlation (FE-SDIC). Within such a framework, given that the very same mesh can be used for the simulation and the measurement, the corresponding displacements can be compared directly. In addition, a mechanical regularization of the FE-SDIC measurements allows mechanically consistent fields to be evaluated, such as displacement and rotation fields that could be used as boundary conditions in the simulations. The experimental procedure, the measurement methodologies and the calculation/test dialogue are validated on isotropic metal plates in this paper. ''VERTEX" program was funded by the French National Research Agency [3]. VERTEX is the French acronym for ''Experimental Modeling and Validation of CompositE stRucTures under complEX loading". Nowadays, in terms of predictive virtual testing, a number of modeling strategies are relevant and are beginning to be predictive. Several approaches are based on continuum mechanics and damage mechanics: the ''mesomodel" developed initially at LMT Cachan [4] and the ONERA model (ranked ''best model" in WWFE 3 [5,6]), among others [7,8]. The authors of these articles (the present article and its second part) initially developed the Discrete Ply Model method to deal with out-of-plane issues such as low energy
Increasing Allowable Flight Loads by Improved Structural Modeling
Aiaa Journal, 2006
The tradeoffs of allowable flight loads and safety of aerospace structures via deterministic and probabilistic design methodologies are analyzed. The methodologies are illustrated by performing allowable flight load calculation of a sandwich panel used in aerospace structures. The effect of using a more accurate prediction technique for interfacial fracture toughness that combines interfacial fracture toughness with mode mixity instead of using the traditional model that disregards mode mixity is explored. It was found that by utilizing this more accurate model with the change in B-basis properties, the deterministic approach allows a 13.1% increase in the allowable flight load and a reduction of probability of failure by a factor of five. The probabilistic approach allows a 26.5% increase in allowable flight load, while maintaining the original probability of failure.

Aircraft design becomes more complicated because of limitation over weight and flexibility. Nowadays, in order to achieve the objectives all design is shifting towards composite, because of limitation of knowledge in composite behavior; it's very difficult to predict the results when the composite component is loaded. A safe aircraft wing is designed under static loaded condition during a steady level decelerated condition. Using CATIA V5, the wing model is generated. All the dimensions are obtained by conventional methods. Loads are generated by conventional approaches. FEM is generated using MSC Nastran and Patran 2010. SOL 103 free-free run is carried out to confirm the model. SOL 101 analysis is carried out by considering a model as metallic under given load. For modification, composite is implemented in the model aiming to weight reduction and more load bearing capability. Both Vonmises theory and Tasi-Hill criteria implemented while executing analysis.
Conceptual Design of Future Aircraft Structures Incorporating Dynamic Loading
7th Aircraft Structural Design Conference, 2020
The aviation industry's progression toward unconventional, highly-integrated aircraft configurations, which are likely to experience dissimilar loading to conventional Tube-And-Wing aircraft, challenges the capabilities of existing conceptual design methodologies. The structural design process is driven by inertial loading resulting from static, quasi-static and transient load events which define performance requirements for aircraft structures. The impact of aero-elastic responses to dynamic load events on the structural design of the aircraft is poorly understood for unconventional airframe-propulsion system configurations. Modelling and analysis strategies which directly resolve dynamic loads early in the design
Brazilian Journal of Development, 2021
The procedure of structural design for aircraft parts is widely known and discussed in the academy and in the industry, although it has been improved along the time. It is based on a detailed process of aerodynamics loads study coupled or not with specifications required by regulatory agencies. Further, several interactions of analysis are done to define the critical stress state of the structure submitted to load conditions, because it is a complex structure that needs to be often improved and updated (considering the requirement of assembly/disassembly simplicity). There are several components in an aircraft attached to each other by the use of fasteners, rivets or nuts made of different materials (aluminum, steel, Inconel among others). In fact, it is not to easy to obtain stress state of the aeronautical structure for real loading conditions. Further, it is also difficult to calculate the load acting on each one of the joints. Several studies were already performed in order to obtain the correct understanding of how actual loads is distributed through the joints. The present work aims to compare results in aircraft joints (focusing in spar and skin regions), considering three levels of fidelity to understand the differences in the structural response using different type of modeling approach. Finite Element Analysis modelings made using Nastran software were performed. Preliminary results show good response agreement even for high and intermediate detail levels. Low detail level present promisor response as a tool for predesign.
Chapter 1 Physical and aerodynamic loads
This chapter is review of analyses of physical and aerodynamic loads acting to the airplane. It is well known that from range of external loads only considered critical loads which are dangerous for structure of airplane. There is plotted block-scheme of so called " airplane – air " system work near critical situations. Also analyses papers, where are investigated vibration of structures, which has ideal-elastic or viscous-elastic physical natures. Most attention paid on papers, where investigated hereditary deformable structure of airplane. There is interest on structures working at different conditions compare to purely elastic structures, such flight on quite or air turbulent stream. These analyses were investigated by methods and ways of obtaining statistical characteristic of forced motion of airplane under influences of air turbulence. 1. In particular, the neural network approach to Demister-Schaefer theory has been demonstrated. Different modulus adherents, so that the adhesive pressures are approximately the same part of the vertical stabilizer was selected and reconstructed using the structure design of the hybrid wing body plane during the preliminary design phase. Due to the high number of design variables and various repairs, adhesive bonded fiber-composite joints or reinforcements are a challenging optimization problem, and this sheet directly affects structurally efficient and minimal damage by lightning strikes on aircraft structures. Parent systems rather than standard repairs. In the first part, the phenomenon of lightning curve connection in aircraft was introduced. Certain bonded joints offer more effective repairs than conventional mechanical joints, which are not fully credited with reducing their performance, and have important needs in most countries of the world. This article focuses on introducing integrated structural features and background, including application for civil aviation and flight qualification requirements, and the main purpose of this study is a computerassisted materials selection tool.-Reinforced alloy. This paper explores the distribution of dynamic load identification given the unknown but limited uncertainties in aircraft configuration. Numerical and Experimental UAV Structure Investigation by Pre-Flight Load Test
Sensors (Basel, Switzerland), 2020
This paper presents the preparation and execution of on-ground static and engine load tests for the composite unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The test was conducted for pre-flight structural strength verification of the remotely piloted aerial target named HORNET, after introducing some structural modifications. The ground tests were performed before the flight test campaign, to ensure the strength and operational safety of the modified structure. The panel method and Computer Aided Design (CAD) modelling were adopted for numerical evaluation of aerodynamic and inertial forces’ distribution to simulate loading scenarios for launch, flight and parachute deploying conditions during the static test. Then, the multi-stage airframe static test was prepared and executed with the use of a designed modular test rig, artificial masses, as well as a wireless strain measurement system to perform structure verification. The UAV was investigated with 150% of the typical load spectrum. Furthermore...
