Proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Innovation in Education (ICoIE 2018), 2019

There has been a long debate among the language practitioners on the effectiveness of an approach for teaching grammar. This paper discusses the effectiveness of an integrated story-based grammar learning (ISGL) modelon students' grammar learning achievement. This study was an experimental study involving two groups with 35 students in each of itsexperimental and control group at the English Education Study Program, University of Bengkulu. The data were taken by using a grammarpretest and post-test and an interview. The pretest and post-test scores were analyzed by the using t-test calculation and the interview data was analyzed through the steps of data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The result of the t-test calculation shows that t-count (2.775) was greater than t-table (1.995). It means the use of the ISGL model is more effective in enhancing the students' grammar learning achievement than the conventional approach which commonly used at the EESP, FKIP University of Bengkulu. In addition, the interview results also reveal that use of ISGL model makes the grammar learning more interesting and enjoyable.

Reading Stories to Enhance English Grammar Intake: Correlational Analysis by Yoseph Gebrehiwot Tedla & Mekwanent Tilahun Desta

International Journal of English Language & Translation Studies Vol-2, Issue-1, 2014

Today, stories are recommended by many scholars in the area of ELT as good vehicles for presenting grammar items contextually. The roles they play increase as they become appropriate to students’ level, experience and interest. Students get the opportunity to see grammar points functioning within real contexts when they get exposed to stories, and they learn the varied ways of expressing a single thought through different structural formations in stories. In this respect, this paper is a part of the project which was designed to investigate whether association exists between reading stories for longer hours and grammar intake in the elementary levels in the Ethiopian context or not. After attending reading sessions for a specified number of hours, participants (from the total) were randomly selected (to reduce the effects of any extraneous variables) and were given grammar test, and then their scores were analyzed. Accordingly, the correlation coefficient was found to be (r) = 0.668, which indicated a strong positive relationship. The significance value was recorded as (p) < 0.001, indicating that a significant correlation exists between number of hours spent on reading stories and grammar intake. Based on the results and findings, the paper also recommends that material developers, in general, and classroom practitioners, specifically, should consider the contribution of carefully selected stories to the enhancement of students’ grammar intake and should use them as a technique of grammar presentation. Mind Your Grammar! − Learning English Grammar the Fun Way

Journal of Educational and Social Research, 2013

English has complicated sets of grammar rules, which make it a challenging language to master. Many non-native learners struggle with these rules and encounter difficulties in understanding them. Malaysian students, in particular, are unable to apply the different parts of speech and types of tense in English accurately in their speaking and writing. Hence, using the right approach to teach grammar is essential to help the students learn it effectively. This paper presents a survey study of an innovation project titled Mind Your Grammar!. It is a language board game, designed specifically for the beginner-level learners of English, both in schools and higher learning institutions. When learning grammar becomes a game, it takes away the monotony that appears to associate with it. Instead, the game aspect comes to the foreground where the learners believe that they are playing a game; thus, this will enable the language teacher to retain their interest without making them bored or anxious. The board game is a useful tool for teaching and learning the English grammar items, which could help reduce the learners' anxiety and motivate them in the learning process. Based on the survey conducted on the students' feedback after playing the board game, a huge majority of the participants responded that it is a useful, practical and fun tool for learning English grammar.
