A Collaborative Interface for Editing Large Knowledge Bases

A new generation of knowledge/databases is emerging. These systems contain thousands of objects, densely interconnected and heterogeneously organized, entered from many sources, both human and automated. Such systems present tremendous challenges to their users, who must locate relevant information quickly and add new information effectively. Our research aims to understand and support the knowledge editing task. The HITS Knowledge Editor (HKE) is an interface that supports browsing and modifying the CYC knowledge base . HKE has been designed to be a collaborative interface, following a set of principles for sharing tasks between system and user. We describe these principles and illustrate how HKE provides resources built according to those principles that collaborate with its users on a variety of knowledge editing tasks.
MHCWeb: converting a WWW database into a knowledge-based collaborative environment

The World Wide Web (WWW) is useful for distributing scientific data. Most existing web data resources organize their information either in structuredflatfiles or relational databases with basic retrieval capabilities. For databases with one or a few simple relations, these approaches are successful, but they can be cumbersome when there is a data model involving multiple relations between complex data. We believe that knowledge-based resources offer a solution in these cases. Knowledge bases have explicit declarations ofthe concepts in the domain, along with the relations between them. They are usually organized hierarchically, and provide a global data model with a controlled vocabulary. We have created the OWEB architecture for building online scientific data resources using knowledge bases. OWEB provides a shell for structuring data, providing secure and shared access, and creating computational modules for processing and displaying data. In this paper, we describe the translation of the online immunological database MHCPEP into an OWEB system called MHCWeb. This effort involved building a conceptual model for the data, creating a controlled terminology for the legal values for different types of data, and then translating the original data into the new structure. The OWEB environment allows forflexible access to the data by both users and computer programs.
SAVVY Wiki: a context-oriented collaborative knowledge management system

This paper presents a new Wiki called SAVVY Wiki that realizes context-oriented, collective and collaborative knowledge management environments that are able to reflect users' intentions and recognitions. Users can collaboratively organize fragmentary knowledge with the help of the SAVVY Wiki. Fragmentary knowledge, in this case, implies existing Wiki content, multimedia content on the web, and so on. Users select and allocate fragmentary knowledge in different contexts onto the SAVVY Wiki. Owing to this operation, it is ensured that related pages belong to the same contexts. That is, users can find correlations among the pages in a Wiki. The SAVVY Wiki provides new collective knowledge created from fragmentary knowledge, depending on contexts, in accordance with the users' collaborative operations. Various collaborative working environments have been developed for the sharing of collective knowledge. Most current Wikis have a collaborative editing mode to every page, as a platform to enable a collaborative working environment. In order to understand an arbitrary concept thoroughly, it is necessary to find correlations among the various threads of content, depending on the users' purpose, task or interest. In a Wiki system, it is important to realize a collaborative editing environment with correlation among pages depending on the contexts. In this paper, we present a method to realize the SAVVY Wiki, and describe its developing prototype system.
Collaborative refinery: A collaborative information workspace for the World Wide Web

The conceptual framework of a new system, Collaborative Refinery, is motivated by a scenario involving the creation of an FAQ. The scenario introduces the concepts of collecting, culling, organizing and distilling. Distilling is a specialized form of collaborative authoring with support for content selection and genre. The Web-based user interface supporting access to the four conceptual functions is presened in detail. As well, the system architecture and a current implementation are described in detail. Several research directions are discussed with respect to Collaborative Refinery. Collaborative Refinery is related to prior research in personal information management, collaborative authoring, and shared workspaces.

Abstract. This paper introduces and compares two innovative tools aimed at enhancing the collaborative work of the researchers and professionals from the West Balkan countries in the Semantic Web field. The first tool, the Alfresco system, is a version controlled content repository designed in REST architectural style and based on a set of document management and collaboration services. The Alfresco workflow engine enables organization and automation of the process activities. The second tool, the Semantic MediaWiki portal, is a semantic collaboration tool and knowledge management system that leverages the latest Semantic Web (SW) technologies and standards. By using semantic annotations, it enriches the Web contents with semantics and makes the knowledge explicit. Abstract. In this paper, we present LinkZoo, a web-based, linked data enabled tool that supports collaborative management of information resources. LinkZoo addresses the modern needs of information-intensive collaboration environments to publish, manage and share heterogeneous resources within user-driven contexts. Users create and manage diverse types of resources into common spaces such as files, web documents, people, datasets and calendar events. They can interlink them, annotate them and share them with other users, thus enabling collaborative editing, as well as enrich them with links to external linked data resources. Resources are inherently modeled and published as RDF, and can be explicitly interlinked and dereferenced by external applications. In the frame of an interdisciplinary research project that is concerned with data from heterogeneous domains, such as archaeology, cultural sciences, and the geosciences, a web-based Knowledge Base system was developed to facilitate and improve research collaboration between the project participants. The presented system is based on a Wiki that was enhanced with a semantic extension, which enables to store and query structured data within the Wiki. Using an additional open source tool for Schema–Driven Development of the data model, and the structure of the Knowledge Base, improved the collaborative data model development process, as well as semi-automation of data imports and updates. The paper presents the system architecture, as well as some example applications of a collaborative Wiki based Knowledge Base infrastructure.
Collaborative Web-Publishing with a Semantic Wiki

Semantic wikis have been introduced for collaborative authoring of ontologies as well as for annotating wiki content with semantic meta data. In this paper, we introduce a different approach for a semantic wiki based on an ontology meta model customized especially for the deployment within a wiki. For optimal usability clientside technologies have been combined with a simple semantic query language. Text fragments of a wiki page can be annotated in an interactive and rather intuitive way to minimize the additional effort that is necessary for adding semantic annotation. Thus, the productivity and efficiency of a semantic wiki system will open up for non expert users as well.

Nowadays, Concurrent Engineering generalised implementation within business and professional ecosystems requires new multidisciplinary and multi-site collaborative environments, methods and tools that could stimulate creativity and increase innovation opportunities. While the focus in the past was on how to improve processes within single organisations, the current business network dynamics render the old methods unusable. What is needed are the methods and tools to support interpersonal communication and interpersonal productivity in order to maintain a higher level of knowledge entropy that can eventually assist knowledge workers generating more ideas and therefore stimulates creativity. This paper presents a virtual space of networked individuals within on-line communities through the integration of several technologies, namely shared workspace, wikis, wikis and blogs, to better support interpersonal knowledge connection. While shared workspace technology has already been widely deployed to support project teams, very little has been done so far regarding the use of wiki and blog technologies in the context of supporting on-line communities (e.g. Wikipedia) of knowledge workers. Our main idea was to integrate those technologies together and to use the resulting collaborative environment as a knowledge networking instrument where formalised concepts and members' profile are key components to support people-concepts networking.
