An Analysis of Android Smartphones as a Platform for Augmented Reality Games

In this work, we analyse the capabilities of an Android smartphone with the OpenGL ES API for the rendering of synthetic realistic images. The aim is to find out the facilities and the main limitations of the platform for the development of augmented reality games. Thus, our research covers mainly three fields: an analysis of the information provided by the camera, a study of the tracking and positioning capabilities of current smartphones and an outline of the rendering facilities usually found in these devices. The performance, in terms of frames per second and latency, has been tested in different smartphones, in addition to evaluate the reliability and efficiency of the sensors and the quality of rendering. In order to show all the results obtained from this study we have developed an augmented reality game trying to combine quality, performance and velocity of response. Android Battle Game Based on Augmented Reality with 2D Object Marker
This research develops the game by applying the Augmented Reality system in making games. Similar games that have been observed have a weakness where the Augmented Reality characters that appear do not match the marker, there is no calculation of the distance between the marker card as a battle trigger, and no character has raised the urban legend. For this reason, it is necessary to make a similar game by applying the Based Tracking Marker technique by calculating the distance of action between two markers by raising the theme of urban legend Indonesia and foreign legend. This research succeeded in making Multimedia battle fighting game products using the Multimedia Development Life Cycle approach which introduced by Luther. Based on the tests that have been carried out, the alpha test results are functionally appropriate and from the beta testing the results of the User Acceptance Test functionalities obtained a value of 71% declared feasible to use with the interpretation of "Good" which means this game is feasible and can be developed.
Implementation of Augmented Reality in Multiplayer Games

This research develops augmented reality games by applying multiplayer features. Some previous research on augmented reality games has suggestions for features similar to multiplayer. And the weaknesses of some previous studies also exist in augmented reality which still requires technology-based tracking markers. The markers used must match the Markers available in the database game. For this reason, an augmented reality game needs to be made by adding multiplayer features and also applying marker less technology. This study succeeded in making a Multiplayer Action Game by utilizing Augmented Reality technology without using the luther-sutopo method. Based on the tests that have been carried out, alpha test results that contain functional tests are obtained and the results of beta testing with a questionnaire obtained 90,6% value which is declared "Good" then this game is feasible to use and support.
Case Studies on the Development of Games Using Augmented Reality

Games have fascinated people in activities related to entertainment, education, health care, etc. The use of augmented reality technology, using computational support, brings the game from the computer to the user space, making the interaction friendlier. This paper introduces augmented reality and makes considerations on the ARToolKit software, pointing out its interactive processes. The use of augmented reality in the development of games is illustrated by five case studies of games implemented with ARToolKit. The main characteristics of each game and the exploration of the augmented reality resources are discussed.
Empirical Analysis of Mobile Augmented Reality Games for Engaging Users’ Experience
This paper presents the results of an empirical analysis of mobile augmented reality (AR) games focusing on elements of user engagement. The area covered in the analysis was based on the user engagement literature review in classical games as well as AR technology. The results showed that five major elements that affected the user engagement were social, perceived usability, challenge, satisfaction and clear goals. This finding is suggested as one of the key considerations prior in developing mobile AR game.
Augmented Reality Multiplayer Gaming
Augmented Reality Gaming is a fast developing technology in the gaming world. It integrates the game’s visual and audio content with the user's environment in real time. This technology enables us to use the existing environment and help create a playing field within it. In this paper, we are proposing a multi-player game using augmented reality through Wi-Fi/hotspot to play offline. Here, one can view cubes in their augmented world through their camera. The user in single player mode must locate the cubes in their environment and shoot the cubes to score and progress to the next level. The users in multi-player mode compete with each other to score within the given time frame. This being a completely offline game serves as a biggest advantage as it could be played anywhere and it could be widely used by everyone to have a fun gaming experience.
An Exploration From Virtual to Augmented Reality Gaming

Computer games are continuously improving graphics capabilities and game-play but the market demands show that more compelling gaming applications are required. In this paper, the requirements of modern gaming applications are investigated and a classification of the most significant game design issues is presented. To understand the issues related to video and virtual reality gaming, an interactive game engine is designed and as a case study a traditional two-dimensional arcade game, called Breakout, is ported. Collision detection is supported between the graphics components of the application based on Newton laws of physics. To test the effectiveness of our approach, a tangible platform for playing interactive three-dimensional games using video see-through augmented reality techniques is proposed. To evaluate the effectiveness of each application a pilot study was performed and the initial results of this study are presented.
Using Augmented Reality to Enhance Aetherpet, a Prototype of a Social Game

The objective of this research is to create a social game that can be shared not only by digital means but also by non-digital means while at the same time providing updated information. The same utilizes augmented reality (AR) technology and a cloud marker recognition system and allows creations of unique marker for each player without the need to do an update every time. Aetherpet is a virtual pet game designed to become a prototype in implementing augmented reality technology in mobile gaming. This application is developed for the Android platform and Vuforia library. The marker image generated from the application is converted into features; that can be detected on a grayscale marker image. The prototype result shows that augmented reality is possible to be implemented. There are only small restrictions on the implementation such as incompatibility of some features and requirement for a reliable server to handle the game information processing.
Guidelines for designing augmented reality games

The growing popularity of augmented reality (AR) games in both a research and more recently commercial context has led for a need to take a closer look at design related issues which impact on player experience. While issues relating to this area have been considered, to date most of the emphasis has been on the technology aspects. Furthermore it is almost always assumed that the augmented reality element in itself will provide a sufficient experience for the player. This has led to a need to evaluate what makes a successful augmented reality game. In this paper we present a set of design guidelines which are drawn from experiences of three mixed reality games. The guidelines provide specific guidance on relationships between real and virtual space, social interaction, use of AR technologies, maintaining consistent themes and implicitly address higher level aspects such as presence within a particular augmented reality place.
ARZombie: A Mobile Augmented Reality Game with Multimodal Interaction

Augmented reality games have the power to extend virtual gaming into real world scenarios with real people, while enhancing the senses of the user. This paper describes the AR-Zombie game developed with the aim of studying and developing mobile augmented reality applications, specifically for tablets, using face recognition interaction techniques. The goal of the ARZombie player is to kill zombies that are detected through the display of the device. Instead of using markers as a mean of tracking the zombies, this game incorporates a facial recognition system, which will enhance the user experience by improving the interaction of players with the real world. As the player moves around the environment, the game will display virtual zombies on the screen if the detected faces are recognized as belonging to the class of the zombies. ARZombie was tested with users to evaluate the interaction proposals and its components were evaluated regarding the performance in order to ensure a better gaming experience.
