Firefighters: psychopathology and working conditions

Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas), 2013

Firefighters perform all kinds of rescues. Their job places them in potentially traumatic situations which may cause work-related mental disorders. This study aimed to investigate the working conditions and mental health of firefighters in Southern Brazil. The research subjects included 25 men and 2 women. The authors analyzed the anxiety, depression, alcohol use, post-traumatic stress disorder, and work environment of the firefighters, by means of scales, a questionnaire and an interview. Descriptive analysis and correlation measures were used, based on the variables of interest and content analysis. The results indicated that these professionals need higher salaries, better equipment and more training. Personal valorization and conversations with superiors were cited as positive aspects. Regarding the main aim of the study, the authors found correlations between alcohol abuse and length of service, alcohol abuse and age, and depression and age. These data suggested that there is e...

" Coping, quality of life, burnout, secondary trauma and mental disorders among firefighters "

Background: Firefighting is considered to be one of the most stressful professions. The stress factors firefighters are exposed are numerus. Aim of the present study is to examine if coping strategies, secondary trauma, burnout and quality of life affects the mental health of Greek firefighters. or had already developed a mental disorder. Statistical analysis showed significant correlations between the risk of developing psychopathology and specific coping strategies. Moreover mental health was strongly correlated with Quality of Life (r= .416), Burnout (r= .670) and Secondary Trauma (r= .560). In addition, hierarchical regression analysis revealed that burnout, quality of life and coping strategies are predictors for the development of mental disorders. Conclusions: The study results indicate poor quality of life, specific coping strategies, burnout and the exposure to secondary trauma favor the development of a mental disorder. Fire Brigades should develop mental health promotion programs in order to help firefighters built psychological resilience and cope successfully with stress.

Job Demands and Exhaustion in Firefighters: The Moderating Role of Work Meaning. A Cross-Sectional Study

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health , 2021

Emotional exhaustion and other symptoms of burnout are often found among emergency services professions, such as firefighting. Given the social importance of this activity and the high responsibility it requires, prevention and alleviation of burnout symptoms become primary concerns in ensuring the well-being of firefighters. Although work meaning is one of the factors associated with a lower risk of developing burnout, its protective role has not been studied in firefighters. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the buffering role of work meaning in the health-impairment process of the Job Demands-Resources model, targeting the relationship between job demands and related emotional exhaustion. A cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data from a sample consisting of Romanian firefighters (n = 1096). Structural equation modeling indicated a positive link between job demands and exhaustion. In addition, deriving personal meaning from work was associated with lower levels of exhaustion in firefighters. A small but significant interaction effect between work meaning and job demands showed that higher levels of work meaning attenuated the positive relationship between job demands and exhaustion. In conclusion, our findings suggest that work meaning has a buffering effect on the impact of various job demands on job-related exhaustion. Nevertheless, the small effect sizes warrant further research on this topic.

Organizational Drivers of Burnout and Work Engagement: A Multilevel Study in Portuguese Firefighter Brigades

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health

In this study, we analyzed how organization-level demands and organizational-level social support relate to the core dimensions of burnout and work engagement, controlling for individual resources (i.e., proactive coping) and demands (i.e., acute demands) using the Job Demands-Resources Theory. In a sample of 1487 Portuguese firefighters nested within 70 fire brigades, hierarchical linear modeling indicated that: (1) proactive coping was related to lower burnout and higher work engagement, whereas acute demands were related to higher burnout and lower work engagement (for vigor only); (2) proactive coping moderated the relationship between acute demands and vigor; and (3) unexpectedly, social support from colleagues was not related to firefighters’ well-being, whereas organization-level demands were related to higher burnout and lower work engagement. These results suggest the need to implement practices and policies to guarantee the relevant conditions for improving the well-being ...
