Grammatical and Lexical Errors in Students’ English Composition Writing: The Case of Three Senior High Schools (SHS) in the Central Region of Ghana

This is a qualitative study aimed at finding the lexical and grammatical errors students of three Senior High Schools in the Central Region of Ghana commit in their essay writing. The study also sought to examine the frequency of the errors and what can be done to improve the teaching of L2 (English) writing in the Senior High School. The study used a corpus of essay writings of 150 second year students. The schools and the participants were purposively selected. The data were analyzed using the content analysis approach. The study identified that the lexical errors in the students' writing were due to homophone problems and semantic lexical errors. The grammatical errors identified were agreement errors, tense errors, singular-plural (number) errors, prepositional errors, and article errors. The study also found that the most frequently committed grammatical error was tense errors followed by agreement errors. The implications of these findings to the teaching of English writing are that teachers where possible should have understanding of both the L1 and L2 of the students and teachers should explicitly teach for transfer, have adequate knowledge of how to identify students' writing errors, and use effective teaching strategies to improve students' English writing. Additionally, teachers should serve as models of using appropriate English for students to emulate and also create a conducive classroom environment for students to participate in class activities. Lastly, teachers should create more opportunities for students to write.

An Analysis of the Grammatical Errors in the Written English Compositions of JSS 1 Pupils in Five Junior Secondary Schools in Bo City, Southern Sierra Leone

This study focuses on the grammatical errors in the essays written by JSS1 pupils in five junior secondary schools in Bo city. It aims at identifying the errors occurring in the use English grammar by pupils, classifying the errors, determining their frequency levels and their sources. The descriptive survey design was used in this study, where out of a population of 853 pupils, 250 pupils were used a sample for this study. Each of the pupils was asked to write an essay, and the scripts were marked to identify all grammatical errors made by the pupils. From this study, it was discovered that out of 250 scripts, 32% of the pupils were not able to communicate their thoughts meaningfully. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative. The sample of this research is sixth semester students at English education program of Batanghari University and choosing them by using random sampling technique. Investigating Grammatical Errors Made by the IGCSE Students ( International General Certificate of Secondary Education ) in Writing

The purpose of this study is to explore the common types of grammatical errors made by the IGCSE students in their English writing. The study was conducted in four different international schools in Khartoum state. The most common grammatical errors which were found in the students writing included: passive voices, verb tense and form, prepositions, conjunctions and punctuation. These errors were classified and tabulated according to their number of frequency in the students writing. One hundred and fifty students sat for an English test which consisted of grammatical areas and a writing task. This research paper is a concise analysis of writing errors in first draft essays of Northern Nigeria college freshmen. Data is drawn from 70 first draft freshman composition corpus which is presented and analyzed. Meaning cannot be transfered well if there is errorin grammar. This paper aims to determine the grammar errors committed by the 6th semester students of English Education Department as basis for new method. Specifically, the study aims to answer: 1) what grammar errors are committed by the 6th semester students of English Education in their written text; and 2) what factors caused the students to commit these errors in writing as evident on their written composition. The aim of this research was to find out the types, the percentage and the sources of the error from The Eighth Semester Students of English Departement of IKIP Muhammadiyah Maumere in the academic year of 2017/2018.
