ME3CA: A Cognitive Assistant for Physical Exercises that Monitors Emotions and the Environment

Recent studies show that the elderly population has increased considerably in European society in recent years. This fact has led the European Union and many countries to propose new policies for caring services directed to this group. The current trend is to promote the care of the elderly in their own homes, thus avoiding inverting resources on residences. With this in mind, there are now new solutions in this direction, which try to make use of the continuous advances in computer science. This paper tries to advance in this area by proposing the use of a personal assistant to help older people at home while carrying out their daily activities. The proposed personal assistant is called ME3CA, and can be described as a cognitive assistant that offers users a personalised exercise plan for their rehabilitation. The elderly population has increased dramatically in today's society. This fact implies the need to propose new policies of attention to this group but without increasing social spending. Currently, there is a need to promote the care of elderly people in their own homes, avoiding being transferred to saturated residences. Bearing this in mind, in recent years numerous approaches have tried to offer solutions in this sense using the continuous advances in new information and communication technologies. In this way, this article proposes the employment of a personal assistant to help the elderly in the development of their daily life activities. The proposed system, called ME 3 CA, is a cognitive assistant that involves users in rehabilitating exercise, consisting of a sensorization platform and different integrated decision-making mechanisms. The system tries to plan and recommend activities to older people trying to improve their physical activity. In addition, in the decision making process the assistant takes into account the emotions of the user. In this way, the system is more personalized and emotionally intelligent.
A Virtual Coach for Active Ageing Based on Sentient Computing and m-health

As life expectancy increases it has become more necessary to find ways to support healthy ageing. A number of active ageing initiatives are being developed nowadays to foster healthy habits in the population. This paper presents our contribution to these initiatives in the form of a conversational agent that acts as a coach for physical activities. The agent can be developed as an Android app running on smartphones and coupled with cheap widely available sport sensors in order to provide meaningful coaching. It can be employed to prepare exercise sessions, provide feedback during the sessions, and to discuss the results after the exercise. It incorporates an affective component that informs dynamic user models to produce adaptive interaction strategies.
Framework for an Intelligent Affect Aware Smart Home Environment for Elderly People

The population of elderly people has been increasing at a rapid rate over the last few decades and their population is expected to further increase in the upcoming future. Their increasing population is associated with their increasing needs due to problems like physical disabilities, cognitive issues, weakened memory and disorganized behavior, that elderly people face with increasing age. To reduce their financial burden on the world economy and to enhance their quality of life, it is essential to develop technology-based solutions that are adaptive, assistive and intelligent in nature. Intelligent Affect Aware Systems that can not only analyze but also predict the behavior of elderly people in the context of their day to day interactions with technology in an IoT-based environment, holds immense potential for serving as a long-term solution for improving the user experience of elderly in smart homes. This work therefore proposes the framework for an Intelligent Affect Aware environment for elderly people that can not only analyze the affective components of their interactions but also predict their likely user experience even before they start engaging in any activity in the given smart home environment. This forecasting of user experience would provide scope for enhancing the same, thereby increasing the assistive and adaptive nature of such intelligent systems. To uphold the efficacy of this proposed framework for improving the quality of life of elderly people in smart homes, it has been tested on three datasets and the results are presented and discussed.
Activity Recognition and Personalized Feedback Solution for Active and Healthy Ageing

As the average lifespan increases, the care of diseases related to lifestyle and age, such as chronic and neurodegenerative ones, becomes costlier and less accessible, highlighting the need for self-management using technology. This paper proposes a pervasive system for autonomous healthy ageing, which integrates two layers of intelligence via semantic interpretation: multi-modal sensor fusion from smart devices, wearables and multimedia, and personalized spoken feedback based on context-sensing and user input. Aiming for a practical, acceptable system, the proposed architecture considers aspects of integration, security, privacy and cost. The currently implemented components include activity recognition and problem detection, complemented by end-user applications and personalized spoken feedback. The proof-of-concept implementation is evaluated both in a lab setting, for the more complex personalized feedback component, and in four real home environments, presenting efficient activity recognition, and improvement in several neuropsychological areas, such as mood, physical functional and cognitive condition of elders.

Over the last few years, research on computational intelligence is being conducted to detect emotional states of people. This paper proposes the use of intelligent wristbands for the automatic detection of emotional states to develop an application which allows to monitor older people in order to improve their quality of life. The paper describes the hardware design and the cognitive module that allows the recognition of the emotional states. The proposed wristband also integrates a camera that improves the emotion detection.
An Affective Personal Trainer for Elderly People

The main goal of this paper is to try to increase the comfort and well-being of older people through the employment of some kind of automated processes that simplify daily work. So, this paper presents a prototype of an affective personal robotic trainer which, together with a non-invasive sensor, allows caregivers to monitor certain physical activities in order to improve their performance. In addition, the proposed system also takes into account how the person feels during the performance of the physical exercises and thus, determine more precisely if the exercise is appropriate or not for a specific person.
User-sensitive home-based systems for successful ageing

The AGNES project focuses on improving the mental and physical wellbeing of elderly people living alone at home, who often suffer the effects of social and physical isolation -including cognitive decline, low activity levels and poor mood states. AGNES will carry out novel technological interventions in an area that is emerging as the new frontier in ageing research. The project will use scientifically-based knowledge on ageing and innovative technology to intervene in the lives of target users in specific and carefully selected ways, and the effects of these interventions on cognitive functioning and quality of life will be evaluated, going beyond the existing state of the art. The results will provide significant new knowledge on the potential of new information technologies to delay, help deal with, and even prevent common chronic problems experienced by the elderly population. This paper presents a short description of AGNES as a project in progress.

Promotion of active ageing through interactive artificial agents in a smart environment

Societies in the most developed countries have witnessed a significant ageing of the population in recent decades, which increases the demand for healthcare services and caregivers. The development of technologies to help the elderly, so that they can remain active and independent for a longer time, helps to mitigate the sustainability problem posed in care services. This article follows this new trend, proposing a multi-agent system composed of a smart camera network, centralised planning agent, a virtual coach, and robotic exercise buddy, designed to promote regular physical activity habits among the elderly.
