Purpose-Students are the hub of activities in an academic environment, and their satisfaction with the performance of educational facilities cannot be overemphasised. Therefore, this study evaluated the post-occupation of students' halls of residence in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria with a view to enhancing effective management of educational facilities. Design/methodology/approach-Data were collected from 245 students who were selected using simple random sampling technique. The study adopted descriptive statistical tools such as mean, standard deviation and Relative Importance Index (RII); the inferential statistical tools adopted were independent-samples t-test and Kendall Tau's correlation. Findings-The results revealed that both genders were fairly satisfied with physical attributes, indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and social factors; while the female students were also fairly satisfied with the supporting service, the male students were fairly dissatisfied. Also, supporting services and IEQ influenced the levels of satisfaction of both genders. Practical implications-This study provides information which can help the management of the University and other comparative educational institutions in the proper management of students' halls of residence. Originality/value-This study has provided insight into the satisfaction of student occupants with halls of residence based on gender differentiation.
This paper examined the physical and psychological health effects of overcrowding among students living in the university hostels. It also explored the influence of age and gender on the perceived effects of overcrowding. The sample consists of 453 (248 males and 205 females) young adults drawn from seven halls of residence within the campus. The selected participants completed a questionnaire that assessed both the physical and psychological health status. The results showed that experience of overcrowding, loss of privacy, number officially allocated to the room and the total number of room occupants had significant joint effects on the physical and psychological health status of hostel occupants. It was also revealed that that the type of room had influence and contributed to the level of exposure to disease causing agents. Results also showed a significant influence of gender and age on perception of crowding effect.

This paper reports on a post-occupancy evaluation carried out on the only female students' hostel at Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, in Northwest Nigeria. The researchers aimed to assess the performance of the building, which has been occupied for nearly two decades. They pursued this by measuring occupants' satisfaction with identified variables like accessibility and circulation, occupation density, cleaning and maintenance of the hostel, space performance, and proximity to essential facilities in the institution. The academics collected data via interviews and structured questionnaires administered randomly to occupants on every floor and wing of the hostel. The authors analyzed the data obtained and calculated the Relative Satisfaction Indexes (RSI) for respondents on both floors of the building. Results show that the performance of the hostel is less than satisfactory in respect of most variables examined.

The management of federal universities in Nigeria has not taken the issue of students’ housing provision as a priority. Hence, demand for on-campus housing accommodations far exceeds the supply and this resulted in the majority of the students living in private residences characterised by poor facilities. This study, therefore, assessed the housing quality and facilities in the undergraduate student’s hostels at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria to investigate its suitability for learning and research. A simple random sampling technique was used for the study. Data were collated from both primary and secondary sources. The data collected were analysed using frequency tables and weighted mean scores for estimating the Housing Quality Indices (HQI) according to a 5-point Likert scale. The academic performance of the occupants before and after moving to the university hostel was equally investigated using a regression analysis to test if a relationship exists among t...

This paper researched "an inventory of personal health amenities for safe students habitation of University of Jos". The total population of the study comprises all the undergraduate students in the University. University of Jos is made up of 10 (ten) facilities with a total population of 12,855 students. Out of this population, 9773 were male and 4082 are female. The sample consists of 500 male and female students of the University. Cluster sampling method was used in selecting the sample from the ten facilities. The sample was distributed among five facilities with each faculty having 100 sampled representations. Questionnaire was used to collect the data which was analyzed. The results of the study shows that majority of the students responded positively that university buildings are well maintained, accept the hostels and classroom blocks. There are inadequate provision of safety devices, the windows and doors are not well protected against harmful insects with wire mesh, the sporting facilities are inadequate and the playground are not free from hazards. In addition, the electricity supply is not constant and there are inadequate standby electricity generators to ensure steady supply of light during interruption. Similarly, waste disposal systems are not given prior attention which leads to disposal of waste materials in every hook and corners of the hostels and classroom areas of the university. With regard to toilet facilities, it is concluded that the number of toilet facilities does not meet the needs of the growing population of the students in the campus. More so, the water supply on campus lack good quality and inadequate storage system to meet the health needs of individual's student. The inadequacy of these health amenities may affect the physical, social, cultural, biological and emotional environment of the school that influences, habits, attitudes, comfort, safety and working efficiency of students and personnel.
