Evaluation of Five Extraction Methods for Predicting Available Forms of Iron in Soils of Southeastern , Nigeria

2015

Available forms of iron in soils can be assessed through the use of chemical extraction methods. Soil test provide an indication of nutrient level in the soil and together with plant analysis are important agronomic tools for determining crop nutrient needs, predicting the nutrient-deficient areas and preventing the deficiency. This study was therefore conducted in laboratory and greenhouse environment to evaluate suitable extraction method for predicting available forms of iron in soils of southeastern Nigeria, using five extraction procedures (Coca-cola, 0.05M EDTA, 1N NH4OAC +0.05M EDTA, 1N NH4OAC and O.1N HCl). Iron uptake by maize (Zea mays L.) plants was analyzed together with the Fe content in the soils in which maize plants were grown under greenhouse conditions. Iron content in maize plants were determined by AAS. The results obtained in this study shows that Coca-cola method extracted the highest amount of the Fe (12.77 mgkg) while, 1N NH4OAC +0.05M EDTA extracted the leas...

Comparative Analysis of Some Digestion Methods Used in the Determination of Metals in Soil and Sediments

Analytical study was carried in order to compare the accuracy of three (3) frequently used digestion methods, in the determination of metals in soil and sediments. Samples of soil and sediments were taken from three different locations namely; Bakalchi, Batare, and Anguwan Honna in Girei Local Government Area in Adamawa State Nigeria. Sample matrix was formed from the three samples and the three digestion methods was carried out on each of the sample matrix formed, the methods are, Method I: Roast before digestion using aqua regia as used by Ehi-Eromosele and coworkers [1], Method II: Air dried and digest using Aqua-regia similar to the work of Saxena [2], and Method III; Roast using ammonium chloride before digestion with aqua regia similar to the work of Voica et al [3]. The metal elements Calcium and Iron were chosen because of their relative abundance in natural soil and sediments. Results obtained shows that the soil and sediment samples contain the metal element calcium and Iron which were used to examine the frequently used digestion methods. Based on the result obtained from the analysis, method III (Roast with NH 4 Cl and digest with aqua regia) appears to be the most promising, given the higher concentration of the elements in all the matrix samples examined.

Assessment of Physico-Chemical Properties and Heavy Metal Contamination in Soil Samples from Benue South,North Central Nigeria.

IOSR Journals , 2019

Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into a natural environment that causes instability, disorder, and harm to the ecosystem i.e. physical system or living organisms pollution refers to the occurrence of an unwanted change in the environment caused by the introduction of harmful substance or production of harmful conditions In this study, different soil samples were collected from different sampling points and dried, then digested with acid using standard methods. The concentration of Fe, Zn, Cu, Ni, ,Cd and Pb were determined using Atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The result of the analysis indicates that Fe has the highest concentration among the all metals found in all the locations. Iron has the highest concentration among all the metals studied and its levels ranged from 95.20 to 104.2 (mg kg-1 ) with mean value of 94. 90 ± 17.19.Iron is vital for almost all living organisms, participating in a wide variety of metabolic processes, including oxygen transport,DNA synthesis, and electron transport.High concentration of Fe (104.2mg kg-1 ) in soil samples was observed in Otukpo –ijo while ugboju shows the lowest value. While the concentration of Pb was found to be low in this study. Physico- chemical properties were also determined showing that the soil PH was moderately acidic and presence of some organic matters and the soil was moderately saline. Furthermore, agricultural practices affect the environment on, near and beyond the farm; and it is important to examine some of the different impacts that agriculture may have on the environment such as change of land use and chemical pollution.

Determination of some Heavy Metals in Soil Sample from Illela Garage in Sokoto State, Nigeria

The research investigated the concentration of some heavy metals in soil sample from Illela garage in Sokoto state using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). The results obtained for these metals (Fe, Cr, Cd, Zn and Pb) from the sample location indicated that Fe was higher than all other metals. The results obtained in dry weight were Fe (1771.00 ±112.73 μg/g), Pb (117.30±7.13 μg/g), Cr (51.75±2.93μg/g), Zn (30.54±0.61 μg/g) and Cd (0.277±0.02 μg/g). The soil pH in waters was 7.12 and in CaCl2 was 6.39 and the moisture content was 5%. The concentration obtained was generally higher than the tolerable limit for safe environment as prescribed by Nigerian Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA) and World Health Organization (WHO).
