Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte

Introduction: Coping is defined as a process based on motor, behavioral, and cognitive effort to deal with the psychophysical demands that exceed an individual’s capacity. One of the instruments used most often for evaluating coping skills is the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28 (ACSI-28). Objective: This study aimed to validate the Brazilian version of the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28 (ACSI-28). The ACSI-28 is a multidimensional inventory developed to evaluate the different methods used by athletes to cope with sports pressure. Methods: The sample comprised 667 Brazilian athletes: male (n = 467; 70%); female (n = 200; 30%) with mean age 25 ± 5 years and eight (± 5) years of experience in individual sports (n = 182; 27.3%) or team sports (n = 485; 72.7%). Results: For construct validity, the relational structure of the items that comprise the original version of ACSI-28 was analyzed using EFA. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure (KMO = .83) and the Bartlett sphericity test (p

Validation of the Arabic Version of the Inventory of Coping Strategies of Competitive Sport (ISCCS)

Advances in Physical Education, 2016

The aim of our study is to validate the Arabic version of the inventory of coping strategies of competitive sports (ISCCS) using factor analysis. After critical analyses of adapted sports versions, Gaudreau and Blondin (2002) proposed the ISCCS questionnaire to measure coping strategies in the field of competitive sports (André & Laurencelle, 2010). The ISCCS identify ten coping strategies that are divided in two dimensions: the coping task-oriented and the coping emotion-oriented. 419 athletes (273 men and 146 women; age 16.79 ± 3.82 years, 14 to 34) in different individual and team competitions, volunteered to participate in the study. Data were collected and analyzed for reliability and validity using the test-retest method, reliability, correlation analysis and confirmatory factor analyses. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS version 22.0.0 the IBM AMOS. The confirmatory factor analyses showed good adjustments for coping models of task-oriented (chi-square 359.35, CFI: 0.92; TLI: 0.91; GFI: 0.93; RMSEA: 0.040 and p value < 0.001), and the coping oriented emotion (chi-square 215.45, CFI: 0.93; TLI: 0.91; GFI, 0.94; RMSEA: 0.054 and p < 0.001). In conclusion, ISCCS was translated and validated in various languages, including French, English, Spanish, and Turkish… Arabic version demonstrated good psychometric properties adjustments and can be used in other surveys in the area of sports competition.

Development and validation of a Spanish version of the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory, ACSI-28

Psicothema, 2011

Sports Psychology researchers have long tried to analyse the personality profi le of athletes in order to accurately predict their future success, injury vulnerability or stress tolerance. The Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28 (ACSI-28) by Smith, Schutz, is one of the tests developed for this purpose. This test has been the object of a number of studies aimed at assessing its psychometric characteristics, its discriminative and predictive capability of future sports performance, and its contribution to an accurate prediction of athletes' risk of injury . the cross-cultural validity of the factorial model and items in the ACSI-28 has received limited empirical attention. At present, there is no empirically-supported Spanish version of the scale. The development of such a scale would enable research with Spanish-speaking athletes, who constitute a signifi cant portion of the world's athletes.

Examination of the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Approach to Coping in Sport Questionnaire

Revista de Psicologia del Deporte

This study examined the psychometric properties of a Spanish version of the Approach to Coping in Sport Questionnaire and potential cultural differences in coping strategies between Spanish, Korean and US athletes. A total of 190 Spanish athletes (Male, N =152; Female, N = 38; M age = 21.2 + 4.4 years) from various sports participated in the study. After specifying the frequency of the experience of psychological difficulties during competition, the athletes indicated how often they used each of the coping strategies targeted in the ACSQ-Spanish and they also completed the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28. The results of CFA provided support for the factorial validity of the ACSQ-Spanish and preliminary evidence regarding concurrent and convergent validity was garnered. Differences in the use of different coping strategies between the Spanish, Korean, and US athlete groups emerged.

Vincent A. Parnabas Nagoor Meera Abdullah* M.S. Omar-Fauzee Mohamad Nizam Nazaruddin Abstract Anxiety is one of the main barriers that impact on performance among athletes and countless researches have been conducted on coping strategy techniques to reduce anxiety among athletes. Coping strategies involve positive or negative techniques. Positive techniques include positive self-talk, physical activity, goal setting, thinking on practice, thought stopping, remembering the worst-case scenario, focus on what you can control, imagery, meditation, simulation, breathing techniques, progressive relaxation, autogenic training and biofeedback, while, negative techniques include drugs, alcohol and smoking. The present study sought to explore potential positive coping techniques used by athletes as influence by demographic variables of athletes. The sample consisted of 78 Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) athletes. The sample was drawn from athletes who competed in MASUM (Sport between Universities). International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences, 2012

The purpose of the present research was to compare psychological hardiness and coping strategies in female athlete and non-athlete students in Zahedan, Iran. The research is causal-comparative and the sample consists of 90 female athlete students and 90 female non-athlete students (19-30 years of age) who were selected using convenience sampling. Bartone's Psychological Hardiness Scale and Billings and Moos Coping Measures were used for data collection. The findings revealed that the psychological hardiness of athletes was significantly higher than that of the non-athletes (p< 0.05).Moreover, a significant difference was observed between the two groups in the components of psychological hardiness (p< 0.05). Regarding coping strategies, although the mean scores of the athlete group in the subscales of coping strategies (cognitive, behavioral, avoidance-focused, problem-focused, and emotion-focused) were higher than the scores of the non-athletes, the difference was not statistically significant (p> 0.05).
