This article discusses the maxims of politeness principles and the pragmatic scales. It is found in the interview between Putra Nababan and Barack Obama on March 22nd, 2010. The purpose of this study is to determine how far the maxims of politeness principles and the pragmatic scales affect Nababan and Obama utterances. The data are taken from the utterances of both participants. It is collected by understanding and taking a note the utterances in the interview. This study analyzes the context of situation in the interview. It also analyzes the maxims and pragmatics scales to know the purpose of using politeness principles. This analysis uses Leech's politeness principle maxims (1983) and Searle's speech acts (1969) theories. Mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative methods) are also used in this analysis. Politness strategies have some roles in communication: to redress some rude utterances, to succeed the speakers speaking goals, to make the utterances acceptable by the hearers, etc. Some studies have dealt with politeness strategies concept by Brown and Levinson (1987), but rarely does the present writer find the politeness concept dealing with assertive illocutionary acts concept (Leech, 1983) and Levinson (1983). This study is about to find what types of politeness strategies on Barack Obama's assertive illocutionary acts utterances. In communication, assertive illocutionary acts have a role to assure the hearers about what the speakers believe. This research is intended to find the positive politeness strategies used by Prabowo in his winning declaration and to reveal the reasons why certain strategies are dominant. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative.The research subject is positive politeness strategies and the research object is Prabowo speech as an Indonesian president candidate 2019-2014. This research used Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness strategies. The research data are in the forms of utterances. Political discourse and the problems connected with it have become the subject of interdisciplinary research due to the special importance of political situations in the modern world. With this background knowledge the study of political speeches has become very important as it belongs to a new trend of linguistics -political linguistics. The paper deals with the problem politicians are most concerned about -this is their public image. According to analysis I have performed, I can say that a politician needs to know and follow the maxims of politeness to be able not to lose his/her image. There are two ways of politeness: positive and negative . Nevertheless, the theory is old, the issue still remains topical in political discourse. Positive politeness is very often characterized by Involvement Strategy. Negative politeness is often called Independent Strategy. With this strategy a politician emphasizes his/her independence. As one can understand the terms " positive" and "negative are used to show terminology opposition and do not have the meaning of being " good" or "bad". While analyzing presidential speeches by Donald Trump aiming at identifying the speaker's linguistic and social behavior, I can say that President Trump's speeches provide rich material for research showing lots of examples of negative politeness emphasizing his strength.
Politeness Principle in 2008 Presidential Debates between Mc Cain and Obama
This paper discusses " diplomatic language " with reference to linguistic theories, especially theories of pragmatics involving the Politeness Principle. In this paper the researcher tries to investigate the 3 presidential debates in 2008 between Senator Mc Cain and Obama. After checking the accuracy of transcripts against the videotape, the researcher through sentence by sentence analysis of the text, examines to what extent each candidate contributes more to Leech politeness maxims. The results of the paper show that in all three debates incident of maxim contribution is preceded by Obama. The researcher closes the paper with discussing the positive impact of these 6 maxims in face saving and group connectedness. She points to politeness maxims consideration as one of having crucial importance which helps diplomatic language to be more effective and successful.

The research aims to figure out the use of politeness strategies and rhetorical devices used by Trump and attempt to reveal the behavior and purpose behind the speeches delivered by Donald Trump during the conflict with Iran taken by the videos in The White House channel on YouTube which are published on January 4th and 9th, 2020. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method by involving the theories by (Brown & Levinson, 1987), (Jowett & O’Donnell, 2012), (G., Preminger, & Brogan, 1994), and Wodak (1987). This study found that Donald Trump mostly uses positive politeness to attend his audience’s attraction to reach his goals and based on the data of the occurance of rhetorical devices, Donald Trump mostly uses Ethos in persuasion which means he frequently shows his good characteristic to reveal people’s trust and followed by using manipulation in each of his in order to manipulate people for achieving his purposes.

This study aimed at reviwing brown levinson politeness strategies purposed in their book (1978) entitled "POLITENESS (Some Universals in Language Usage)". Over the past three decades, there has been a significant increase in research on politeness strategies from social and linguistic aspects. The Communication Presentation of Barack Obama Public Speaking Style

The main idea of this research is to analyse the English modals in Obama's speech semantically. The modal auxiliaries selected for analysis include (Will, Would, Can, Could, and Should). All the modal auxiliaries are interpreted based on the framework of Coates’ (1983) semantic clusters. The qualitative method of analysis is applied into this study. The modal auxiliary of ‘can’ signifying possibility functions to evoke positive emotions and connotations in the mind of all the listeners. It highlights the possibilities that are associated with people's hopes and wishes and reminds all citizens to look on the bright side, and the persuasion form is realized through the motivation on the Obama’s speech modal auxiliaries’ words.
