An Experimental Study on Using Instructional Pronunciation Video to Improve Students’ Pronunciation

Technology has been used in many ways to enhance language learning. Professional literature and research have shown that using video technology in the teaching and learning of pronunciation in the English language classroom has been useful. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of an Instructional Pronunciation Video (IPV) in helping students with low oral proficiency to improve their English pronunciation. The one group pre-test post-test experimental research design is employed in determining whether the use of the IPV will lead to improvement in the students’ pronunciation. The data of this quantitative study were generated from the audio recordings of the pre and post reading aloud tests of 20 university students for identifying students’ pronunciation errors. A narrative inquiry as the approach of qualitative research is conducted in this research to know how the implementation of a video as a teaching media of Phonology and what the problems that the students face in using a video as the learning media of Phonology. This research involves 28 students of the second grade. The subject of research is the students of an English department in Education of UNISKA Kediri. The result is that there are four categorized problems that students face. Students felt that; (1) a native speaker in the video speaks too fast; (2) the pronunciation is unclear; (3) there are some new words or terms; (4) it is difficult to imitate the intonation and stressing of a word and sentence. Media is everywhere; it has become a part of our daily life. People today are better informed and more enlightened thanks to the service of the media. Complaints about its negative effects have been heard and even those who criticize media for its negative impact cannot ignore the fact that media can be used as an effective tool to educate, inform and entertain. For myriad reasons, Audio visual Media, especially videos are definitely acknowledged as one of the most effective tools in education an d training. The purpose of learning any language is to communicate effec tively and no communication is possible if one doesnt get a chance to communicate. It is natural that the demand for communication is high in this ever - changing world. And no doubt English language plays a major role in todays global communication. It is not a subject to be studied. It is rather a skill to be practised. Therefore, practical experience is necessary and any skill can be mastered only through practice. Participation really matters. Exercises those demand verbal interaction (writing as well a s speaking) will definitely exploit the verbal skills of any student. The course material for learning needs to be very creative as creative course material definitely yields better resu lts. Bearing in mind all these features and positive input of media in education, a detailed analysis of available resources and their role in improving the basic skills - listening, speaking and writing - has been attempted. Based on personal experience and feedback received from colleagues, this study aims at giving some pra ctical suggestion and tips on how to use Media in the classroom.

Movie as a Helper for Students' Pronunciation in Speaking Skill Class

This research aims to deliver how a movie can help students with their pronunciation in English speaking skill. Speaking is one of English skill that has an important role. While speaking, there is a certain aspect that has to be paid attention by people. Pronunciation is an aspect that important in speaking skill. Pronunciation takes a significant role in speaking because it shows anything while someone speaks and other people understanding based on how someone pronounces a word. This study is aimed for students who learn the English language as a foreign language (EFL) to drive the importance this area. With qualitative method, this study hopes to avoid people from misunderstanding what non-English native speakers say. This study's discussion drives the urgency to teach speaking with the learning activities designed as well as possible to address pronunciation. This study also recommends parties in educational sector to support the use of various teaching media such as videos pictures, realia, television, but particularly movies. This is because a movie is one of the media that can immensely help student's speaking ability as they actively engage and have fun in imitating the audiovisual feed they receive.

In recent years, a great tendency towards the use of technology and its integration into the curriculum has gained a great importance. Particularly, the use of video as an audiovisual material in foreign language teaching classrooms has grown rapidly because of the increasing emphasis on communicative techniques, and it is obvious that the use of video is a great help for foreign language teachers in stimulating and facilitating the target language. Keeping all this in mind, the purpose of this article was to provide the required information for foreign language teachers (FLT) so that they can make use of video efficiently in the classroom. Reasons for video implication in FLT classroom and teacher's role in this process have been revealed along with some practical techniques for video implication.

The Use of Youtube Videos in Improving Non-English Department Students’ Pronunciation Skills

Purpose, The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not the use of YouTube videos affects the improvement of non-English department students’ pronunciation skills. Design/methodology/approach, The research design used in this study was the pretest-posttest control group design. In collecting data, researchers used several instruments in this study, namely: tests and observations. The data obtained were analyzed using a hypothetical test using a t-test. A computer program called SPSS (statistical product and service solution) for Windows Release version 22, was used in the entire data computing process. Findings/result, The results showed that the use of YouTube videos positively affected students’ pronunciation skills.
