The History of Gender Inequalities and the History of Female Struggle against Male Subjugation

IOSR Journal of Humanities and Social Science, 2014

What is feminism? Is it an outburst or outcry against male-perpetrated atrocities on women? Or is it just the right of a woman to live as she wants to live, by her own ethics and values, as far as she causes no harm, physical or emotional, to anybody? Or is feminism just a chronological narrative of the movements and ideologies that define, establish and defend equal political, economic and social rights for women? Where do the roots of the struggles for women’s liberation lie? Who are the ones who are globally known for their fight against the injustice women are subjected to? This paper traces the roots of gender bias and throws light on the role and status of women down the ages all over the world. At the same time, it also brings to limelight independent women who have always existed in society and who never believed in gender inequality – Sappho, Christine de Pera, Aphra Behn, Olympe de Gorges, Mary Wollstonecraft, Sojourner Truth, to name a few. Sexism between the Male and the Female Gender: An Exposition of ... SEXISM BETWEEN THE MALE AND THE FEMALE GENDER: AN EXPOSITION OF WHO THE OPPRESSOR IS

IRORO: Journal of Arts, Ambrose Alli University , 2019

Sexism is a central issue that engages the attention of many living within the shore of Nigeria and beyond. There is apparently intractable disagreement about which individuals, practices and institutions are sexist. The question of who is oppressing who or who is really the oppressor cannot be overemphasized. This paper attempts to critique the allege subjugation of women by men. The feminists assume that the subjugation of women and the suffering of women are as a result of the patriarchal society and, therefore, advocate an egalitarian society whereby both the male and the female gender have equal rights and opportunities. This paper argues that feminists' approach to sexism is one-way traffic. Patriarchy is arguably alleged as the number one enemy of women's development in many societies. Giving this to be true for the sake of argument, can matriarchy be an alternative to patriarchy? Will the problems faced by women go if they are allowed to take the place of men in their society? Finally, who is really oppressing who? This paper proposes one of the ways by which we can have a balanced feminist approach to sexism which none or few feminists have sufficiently articulated.

WOMEN AND GENDER EQUALITY: JUSTICE OR CIVILIZATION

Journal of Liberty and International Affairs, 2020

The issue of gender justice has drawn the attention of gender scholars as does gender equality a justice or civilization. Because of this, the paper examined women and gender equality justice or civilization. In discussing these gender issues, several documents, reports, newspapers, magazines, archives, articles, journals, among others, were systematically reviewed to support the argument. Two theories were used in supporting the argument. These are Islamic Feminist and Liberal Feminist theories. The assumptions of these theories centered on gender equality and gender justice in society. The study found that gender equality is not civilization but justice. This is of the fact that both men and women are born equal and need equal justice for the development of the nation. The paper recommended that men and women should be given equal opportunity in all aspects of life in order to ensure gender justice. Parents and religious leaders should adhere to the principles of gender equality for the betterment of society.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT SOME REFLECTIONS

The concern with gender emerged as feminist theorists sought to understand the complexities of women's subordination. The word gender came into mainly academic use some 15 years after the reemergence of late-20th-century feminism, which has, unlike its earlier manifestations, made a significant dent in male-dominated (androcentric) scholarship (at least, I like to think so).
