Lexical Ambiguity in the Headlines of the Jakarta Post Newspaper

The purposes of this research are to find the ambiguous words that have many lexical meanings from the headline of The Jakarta Post newspaper, and to classify the forms of the ambiguous words. The lexical ambiguity is divided into two forms Ullmann (1962): polysemy and homonymy. Another semantics’ theories used in this research are from Lyons (1995), Palmer (1981), and Leech (1981). In this research, the writer takes 10 data from 9 headlines of the newspaper that contain lexical ambiguity. In collecting the data, the writer uses note taking technique and non-participant observational technique. The writer took the data from the website of The Jakarta Post, then collected them in the note in order to make it easier in the analysis. In analyzing the data, the writer uses the semantic theories and Oxford Advanced Learners dictionary to find the lexical meanings of the ambiguous words. This research was aim to find out the ambiguity which found in the headline of The Jakarta Post based on semantic analysis first classify it which one the most ambiguous (word, phrase or sentence), then the last interpret the sense of ambiguity based on semantic analysis. The researcher collected 100 data of headlines then reduced it into 10 data purposively the most ambiguous. There are 6 data of ambiguity interpreted into two interpretations and 4 data of ambiguity interpreted into three interpretations. From 10 data, the data researcher found a lexical ambiguity in the headlines of The Jakarta Post published on March 13 th – April 13 th , 2015. Key words: Semantic Analysis, Sense of Ambiguity.

A Lexico-Grammatical Interpretation of Ambiguity and Communicative Effectiveness of Media Headlines of Print Media

This paper analyses semantic ambiguous headlines stating their communicative effectiveness with regards to print media. The concentration of this paper is on the multiple meaning of headlines. Hence, we have realized that multiple meanings of a word or sentence can be analysed semantically based on the syntactic structure. Therefore, the research revolves on the mass media with emphasis on the print media who distort meaning by means of manipulating the sentence clarity to that of vagueness. Some print media have made possible the success of examining critically such headlines which have being selected randomly with regard to there communicative effectiveness.

Types of Semantic Ambiguity Found in the Editorials of Jakarta Post Daily Newspaper

Ambigu merupakan fenomena dalam penggunaan bahasa yang merujuk kepada suatu kata atau ungkapan yang memiliki makna lebih dari satu. Makalah ini bertujuan untuk menemukan jenis-jenis ambigu yang terdapat di dalam tajuk (editorial) pada surat kabar harian The Jakarta Post. Data penelitian ini diambil dari tajuk yang terdapat pada 10 edisi surat kabar The Jakarta Post yang diterbitkan pada bulan November dan Desember 2012. Dari 10 edisi tersebut, diperoleh 113 penggunaan ambigu yang terbagi kepada ambigu leksikal (kata) dan ambigu struktural (frase atau kalimat). Pengelompokan ambigu kepada leksikal dan struktural merujuk kepada teori jenis ambigu yang dikembangkan oleh Kent Bach (2009). Dari hasil analisis data, ditemukan bahwa ambigu berjenis struktural lebih sering digunakan dengan frekuensi 60 kali (53,10%). Sementara itu ambigu leksikal digunakan sebanyak 53 kali (46,90%). Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ambigu yang terdapat dalam tajuk surat kabar The Jakarta Post lebih sering disebabkan oleh penyusunan kata-kata dalam frase atau kalimat yang berpotensi menyebabkan interpretasi ganda dari pembaca.

This article is attempted to describe the content, generic structure and linguistic realization of the popular articles on the newspaper, particularly in the perspective of Indonesian newspaper. This is a descriptive research. The data collection is conducted through the documentation, reading and the questionnaire. There were four newspapers on the article taken from Radar Cirebon published on March 2017. The results of the analysis suggest that the (1) the contents tell us about the facts and the arguments of the authors, (2) the aspect of the structure shows the content of the author's arguments, and (3) The linguistics aspects are realized in various linguistics realization which are relevant to the 2013 curriculum. Conclusion and recommendation are also discussed. Nowadays mass media plays a crucial role in people’s lives. Online newspapers constitute a part of media discourse, which makes for extremely important bodies of text for the purposes of research in discourse analysis. In news headlines, careful and sensitive use is made of linguistic devices in order to make the headlines unique and different, influence the readers, create trust for the newspaper, and, most importantly, invite and encourage the reader to proceed to the whole story and the main body of the report/news report. In this spirit, this study is a linguistic analysis of headlines in the political section of established online American newspapers. The data for this study comprises 50 headlines collected from 5 online newspapers revolving around the theme of Donald Trump.
