The Use of Collections and Services of Academic Libraries in Ghana: A Case Study of Ghana
United International Journal for Research & Technology, 2021
An academic library is established in an institution of higher learning to provide services that will meet the information needs of students, lecturers, researchers and the entire academic community. The use of the library and its resources by the students of the institution is therefore a must for both faculty and students if academic work would go on successfully. This study examines the extent of use of library resources in Ghana Communication Technology University, Accra, Ghana. Two separate questionnaires were used to gather data. 400 registered library users were selected using the stratified random sampling technique. The findings revealed that 46.87% of the students sampled visited the library to read for examination while most faculty members visited the library to consult journals, electronic or print resources and to read newspapers. Also, students used the online catalogue to locate materials more than faculty. It was recommended that faculty give reading assignments that will require students to consult journals and other resources in the library, not just for examination purposes. The library should also embark on aggressive awareness creation on regular basis to showcase the various resources available in the library.
Journal of Education and Practice, 2013
The paper surveys library use among students in tertiary education institutions in the Sunyani Municipality of Ghana. A response rate of 77.4% (697 responses) out of the 900 randomly distributed questionnaires from the three tertiary institutions in the Municipality was recorded for the study. The study was motivated by the advent of information technology's role in information provision. It intended to unravel how best the academic libraries are meeting the information resource needs of users in the digital world.. The study showed, inter alia, that many students principally used the libraries as a place to prepare for examinations and to do their assignments. Recommended course textbooks, reference books and past examination questions were the most sought after materials among the respondents. Few of them had eyes for fiction and periodical resources. Even though majority of the tertiary students find the stock in the libraries to be fairly old, it did not ward them off from using the libraries. It is instructive that if the libraries continue to hold on to old books, it could lead to low patronage of the libraries in the advent of new platforms that have the potential to make large amount of electronic information available to users.

University libraries acquire print information resources such as books and journals as well as electronic information resources to support teaching, learning and research and also facilitate knowledge dissemination. This explains why various library services have been developed to promote and facilitate effective use of recorded information in all formats by users. Student Use of the Library: A Case Study at Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana, Nigeria
The study examined the use of the library by students at the Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic. A combined quantitative and qualitative approach using the case study design was adopted for the study. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 200 students from each of the five faculties of the Polytechnic, totaling 1,000 students, and 15 library and school staff. A survey questionnaire developed by the researchers was employed to determine the use of the library while a face-to-face interview was conducted to gathered data from library and school staff. The reliability co-efficient of the questionnaire via Cronbach Alpha returns an r = 0.87. Four research questions were developed to guide the study. The findings show that more than half of the library users at the Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic visit the library once a day. They use the library to read, to borrow books, and to make photocopies. Students were satisfied with the library collections and services but not with electronic resources. As the library is neither networked nor connected to the Internet, students usually patronize the cyber cafe close to their school as an alternative.
Library Use Characteristics of Undergraduates in Nigeria University of Science and Technology
This study employed a survey method to explore the library use characteristics of undergraduates in a Nigerian University; Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH). The university started academic activities during the 2010/2011 session with four departments and ten academic programmes. Questionnaires were used to gather data from the entire student population, 426 students. 332 undergraduates (78%) completed and returned copies of the questionnaire. Analysis of the returned questionnaires revealed that the respondents make use of the library for few days per week and only for academic purposes. They consult reference sources and subject textbooks which they wanted in both print and electronic formats while their previous knowledge of school library use and library instruction programmes positively influenced the undergraduates' use of library. The study in conclusion recommended involvement of the undergraduates in collection development activities of the library, acquisition of both electronic and print titles, and current awareness services on library's acquisition, functions and services.
