The educational boom that swept the post-socialist and post-Soviet countries in the first 15 years of the new millennium was caused both by global and local factors. There were objective and subjective reasons for it that lead to both positive and negative consequences. Among the global factors, the authors concentrate primarily on the transition to the knowledge society, in the context of which the social and individual need for cultural and, in particular, educational capital is actualized, and professional knowledge and competence become the most important condition for the self-realization of the individual.
