We propose a system called Haptic Pad for Impressive Text Communication for creating text messages with haptic stimuli using the SPIDAR-tablet haptic interface. This system helps users indicate emotion and action of characters in text messages by attaching physical feedback. We evaluated the effectiveness of the system experimentally in three scenarios: storytelling, business e-mail and text messaging. We also conducted experiment for comparing effectiveness of haptic pattern, bold text and emoticon. We found that haptic stimuli are attached to facilitate three functions: emphasis in text messages, expression of emotion, and scene description. We also found that it is effective to apply HAPPicom not only to text messaging but to storytelling.
Evaluation of Haptic Interaction in Online Negotiation
Transactions of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, 2011
In this study, we bring the haptic technology into the online negotiation system to improve the method of conveying nonverbal information. In this system, subjects can convey the nonverbal information by changing the ball's size as well as the force feedback. We conducted two experiments and compared them to verify the effect that the haptic interaction brings about. Results from the experiments implied that online negotiation involving haptic interaction can increase the sense of presence and is also helpful for expressing one's emotions, which play major role in online negotiations.
UPP (Unreal Prank Painter): Graffiti System Focusing on Entertainment of Mischievous Play
2017
Mischief is a behavior that is socially inappropriate, though is not clearly hostile towards other people and things. Mischief is said to have the unique potential to provide pleasant sensations and challenging experiences for mischief makers or players. From this, mischief can be the subject of entertainment as long as it has no critical negative influence on society. In this research, we focused on “graffiti” among the various forms of mischief. We describe the design and implementation of the Unreal Prank Painter, which is an entertainment system beyond mere “drawing,” powered with augmented reality (AR).
Integrated Management of Messages in Different Format on the Internet
2004
Recently, many messages are exchanged through the Internet such as e-mails, BBSs (bulletin board system), and Web sites. As these messages are semistructured data and in the almost same form, messages in the same source are frequently converted into another form as in mailing-list archives. However there is no standard format. In this paper, we propose a unified format and message box of various messages, which are semantically same but syntactically different, on the Internet. The format is based on XML from a wide-use point of view. Furthermore, we propose some applications such as cooperation with Web services and message sharing based on RSS (RDF site summary).
SmartCourier: An Annotation System for Adaptive Information Sharing
Transactions of The Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, 2002
SmartCourier is a Web-based system for browsing electronic documents shared in a group of people. It allows users to annotate on the documents with a pen interface, and share the annotations among the users having similar interests on the documents. Also, the system recommends a user unread documents inferred interesting to the user by using a collaborative filtering method. We prototyped two versions of SmartCourier. The first version used a method to matchmake users according to agreement of annotated area on the same documents without any semantic processing of the annotations and the base documents. The second version employed a method to extract keywords from the annotated area of the base documents and find other related documents sharing the keywords. The experimented evaluation shows the second version of SmartCourier was accepted by the users as more efficient system for facilitating knowledge interaction among them.
