Golabz: Towards a Federation of Online Labs for Inquiry-Based Science Education at School

This paper represents a repository for online laboratories, learning applications and Inquiry Learning Spaces (ILS) towards introducing Inquiry-Based Science Education (IBSE) in schools. In the first part, a classification scheme for online labs and a methodology for creating a federation of online labs are described. In the second part, technical implementation of the defined classification in the Go-Lab Repository is represented. In the third part, a usage scenario is described targeting science teachers of primary and secondary schools, who want to use online labs in their classroom activities. In sum, this paper aims at communicating the pedagogical background and advantages of the represented approach, as well as opportunities opened up by the Go-Lab Repository for teachers practicing inquiry-based learning activities in their classes.

Abstract—The European Commission is funding a large-scale research project on federated online laboratories (Labs) for education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at School. The main educational focus is on inquiry learning and the main technological one is on personalized learning spaces. The learning spaces are offered through a single European social media portal supporting simultaneously teacher communities and student learning activities. This paper presents the general technical framework devised to support the construction and the exploitation of learning spaces, as well as the federation of online labs.

Abstract—Scientific inquiry is at the core of the curricula of schools and universities across Europe. weSPOT is a new European initiative proposing a cloud-based approach for personal and social inquiry. weSPOT aims at enabling students to create their mashups out of cloud-based tools in order to perform scientific investigations. Students will also be able to share their inquiry accomplishments in social networks and receive feedback from the learning environment and their peers. SUFFER: A Cloud System for Teaching Labs in Distance Education

During a pandemic, redesigning the education system to improve access to the available platforms at the universities originally designed for research and local use is necessary. The emergence of cloud computing services has solved many of the performance problems. This paper presents the characteristics of a cloud e-learning tool. In order to do so, the concept of cloud computing is analyzed, and the architecture of the cloud computing platform used in different courses of the Computing Engineering degree are described. This platform was used in a proof of concept in the 2019-2020 academic year. The evaluation results, both from teachers and students that have used it, show positive and promising results.
Laboratories as a Service (LaaS): Using Cloud Technologies in the Field of Education
Society has evolved in such a way that individuals are required to embrace constant improvements in order to be able to perform their jobs properly. Distance education is a solution to this problem, as it allows students to obtain practical knowledge without the space and time constraints of classical face-to-face education, thus allowing them to fit their studies into possibly tight schedules. In order to obtain practical distance education on technical topics, the use of remote laboratories becomes more of a necessity rather than just being an option. To this end, the RELATED framework has been developed in order to permit the structural development of remote laboratories. It presents a structured methodology of remote/virtual lab development and also provides common facilities, such as user management, booking, or basic visualization. In the case that a high number of laboratories and students use RELATED, handling such information becomes a major issue for the proper functionality of RELATED. These issues can be efficiently tackled using cloud technologies. This paper proposes the use of cloud technologies to enhance RELATED and describes the cloud-based architecture that is under development at UNED, including details on its software components and the algorithms needed for resource provisioning.

The Go-Lab ecosystem is an integrated set of digital tools and services aimed at increasing the meaningful use of technology in teaching and learning. Go-Lab offers a free authoring platform to create digital lessons that has been translated into over 30 languages. It also offers a sharing platform to share content or to find ready-made digital lessons and support. This article gives an overview of the diverse possibilities afforded by Go-Lab. We show how one can get started creating and using Go-Lab digital spaces. We then give an example of a complete digital lesson that was made using the pedagogically grounded Go-Lab inquiry cycle. Finally, we show a new and innovative approach to supporting the development of students’ collaboration skills based on the use of asymmetric simulations. As the recent coronavirus outbreak has made clear, online teaching can suddenly become mandatory. Go-Lab offers school teachers a practical and useful solution for delivering online digital lessons.
