Implementation of the Epics Device Support for Network-Based Controllers
In the control system of the JAERI-KEK joint project (High Intensity Proton Accelerator Facility), it is planned to employ network-based controllers such as PLC's and measurement stations instead of using other field control networks, since the network hardware and software can be standardized and they have been successfully utilized in other accelerator control systems in KEK.
Network Based Epics Drivers for PLC'S and Measurement Stations
1999
The control system of the JHF (Japan Hadron Facility) linac is being designed employing EPICS. An overall dis- cussion of the system is provided elsewhere (1). In the system it is planned to install PLC's and measurement sta- tions for accelerator equipment and beam instrumentation, which are connected via an Ethernet/IP network. The reason for the choice of network is that modern con- trollers can be better managed using a TCP/IP network, even for software downloading and debugging and that the IP network and Ethernet are de facto standards. Device support software is being developed in order to integrate these controllers into an EPICS environment. The use of Yokogawa's PLC's are being considered, since many installations are already running in other ac- celerators at KEK although not under EPICS. The EPICS software for these PLC's is relatively straightforward. For measurement stations, WE7000 systems from Yoko- gawa are being evaluated, which are carefully de...
A Remote-Control Engineering Laboratory
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2000
In this paper, a networked control-system laboratory for the remote control of processes is presented. The laboratory allows the students to develop network-based control systems with the use of an architecture consisting of I/O devices, communication modules, and server-client applications implemented with supervisory control and data acquisition environment facilities, and to operate on real pilot plants through an intranet and the Internet. Three examples were presented, demonstrating the potentiality of the laboratory to remotely control the processes and to develop new network-based control-system structures.
In-House Control System for Medium Size Research Facility
Modeling, Programming and Simulations Using LabVIEW™ Software, 2011
SAGA-LS accelerator consists of 255 MeV injector linac and 1.4 GeV electron storage ring. The circumference of the storage ring is 75.6 m. Figure 1 shows the geometrical layout of SAGA-LS facility. At this stage 10 beam lines are offered to user experiments. The control system for the SAGA-LS accelerator, which consists of magnet power supplies, a radio frequency, and a vacuum monitoring system, should be implemented with communication interfaces, because those are distributed in wide area of the facility, and www.intechopen.com Modelling, Programming and Simulations Using LabVIEW™ Software 22 operators have to manipulate these components from the control room. The Ethernet LAN is standard communication interfaces and we can easily use it with MS-PCs and LabView system with server and client model. We adopted Ethernet LAN as communication interfaces with each accelerator devices and PCs, because of its high cost performance. For the connectivity to the accelerator hardware, we selected commercial base off-the-shelf distributed input output devices (I/O devices) such as PLC (FA-M3; YOKOGAWA), and Fieldpoint (National Instruments). A serious issue on SAGA-LS facility is its tightly restricted budget and, hence, the limited number of staff in the facility. Thus, the control system for SAGA-LS should be simple and robust, while inexpensive, easy to develop, to maintain and to be expandable. The solution of this problem in the view point of hardware is the usage of the PC and the off-the-shelf products. On the other hand for the application developments we use the Labview environment, because a few number of staff have to develop the control applications with in-house efforts toward variety of demands from the construction period to the use operation period. Other reasons of using Labview and its merits are discussed in chapter 5.
Remote Laboratory Architecture for the Validation of Industrial Control Applications
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2007
The seven engineering degrees of the Higher Technical School of Design Engineering (ETSID), Technical University of Valencia, include in their formation programs, subjects, and laboratory projects to instruct students in the aspects of the design, development, and validation of applications for process control, automation, industrial informatics, and embedded systems. Moreover, the authors participate in European projects of education such as the International Network of Embedded System (INES) and the European Project Semester (EPS), where exchange students remotely perform the first phase of their projects at ETSID from their home universities. To significantly reduce the cost of installing a huge number of real prototypes in labs and to fulfill the distance requirements of the exchange students, a remote laboratory architecture, i.e., simPROCes, has been designed. simPROCes not only permits the teleoperation of simulators/real prototypes but also allows that complete control applications be remotely tested and validated. simPROCes is precisely specified to be independent of the model of computer, data acquisition card, programming language, and operating system, and is transparent to the programmer and easy to use. This system is useful both for the education and development of control application purposes. A water tank process shows the installation procedure of simPROCes to test and validate control applications. The experience of applying simPROCes in the electronic engineering degree and within the framework of INES and EPS has been successfully rated by student surveys.
Networked Control System Over an EPICS based Environment
2010
The use of distributed control systems for improving control system's performance is a hot research topic. Thus, the importance of developing control systems across networked environment is rising, a lot of research is focused on developing middleware based solutions. On the other hand, EPICS is an extended control system middleware, which is based on TCP/UDP protocol. This protocol has non-deterministic characteristics, limiting its use for networked control systems. Despite of these characteristics, the interest on TCP based networks in industrial field has been increasing due to its advantages in cost and easy integration. In this work, EPICS as a networked control system is analyzed in order to develop strategies to improve its performance. For this purpose, an EPICS based networked control scheme is presented, where control loop is closed over the net. As opposed to usual way of working with EPICS, two IOCs are used located in different hosts. The first one performs data ac...
A high-performance network for a distributed-control system
Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research Section B-beam Interactions With Materials and Atoms, 1989
Local area networks play a central rule in modem distributed-control systems for accelerators. For a superconducting cyclotron under construction at the University of Milan, an optical Ethernet network has been implemented for the interconnection of multicomputer-based stations. Controller boards, with VLSI protocol chips, have been used. The higher levels of the IS0 OS1 model have been implemented to suit real-time control requirements. The experimental setup for measuring the data throughput between stations will be described. The effect of memory-to-memory data transfer with respect to the packet size has been studied for packets ranging from 200 bytes to 10 Kbytes. Results, showing the data throughput to range from 0.2 to 1.1 Mbit/s, will be discussed.
Distributed Control Systems In The Process Control Laboratory
2003 Annual Conference Proceedings
Industrial process control, which moved from Direct Digital Control (DDC) to Distributed Control Systems (DCS) in the late 1970s, is now making another transition to Field Control Systems (FCS). While FCS is just a form of DCS, it adds additional dimensions to the control function through the use of networked systems and smart control elements. Foundation Fieldbus (FF), an implementation of FCS based on international standards, was introduced in 1994 and is becoming an established technology for use in industrial control systems. This paper describes the development of a FCS process control laboratory that includes FF and other networked software products to enhance the learning in a control based laboratory. In addition, the paper compares process control issues using the older DCS model with the Fieldbus solution, and it describes the hardware and software used at Penn State Altoona to build a fully networked FCS process laboratory.

People are developing various technologies, using laws of physics behind real-world phenomena. This process is continuous and is presently getting faster and more intensive. Achieved technological advances affect all areas of every day's life, including the field of education. Contemporary society requires more complex tools providing more accessible and effective educational methods. Information and communication technologies offer many tools to meet the requirements on which rest teaching and learning, especially in natural sciences and engineering fields. Studying these fields is based on real experimental work in laboratories with specific equipment and devices for a better understanding the given phenomenon. This form of study, when the user must regularly attend laboratories to perform necessary measurements, is not always acceptable for many reasons. Most of laboratories cannot provide a wide range of the real experiments, where expensive devices, needed for the elucidating and analysis of desired phenomena, are involved. Development in this direction of these requirements led to the design and implementation of the concept of the remote laboratories to deliver physical experiments via the Internet. The connected users are provided with the different tools as, for example, corresponding theory of the studied phenomenon. In our case, the concept is called Intelligent School Experimental System (ISES) operated as an open system platform. The doctoral thesis focuses on the design and implementation of software components related to the ISES Measureserver, finite-state machine in principle that is a core unit of this platform. The activities within the thesis are aimed at five tasks, defined as the goals of the thesis. These goals were solved as the independent project works, integrating progressive concepts, approaches and technologies, which bring new features contributing to better teaching outcomes, reliability and maintenance of the ISES remote laboratories.
Deployment and Integration of Industrial Controls:The Case of LHC Cryogenics Controls
2003
The new cryogenics controls for LHC (UNICOS) are implemented in an open architecture based on SCADA and PLC industrial components, with Ethernet as Fieldnetwork. Its development was outsourced to industry and since mid-2001 several applications have been produced and delivered for refrigerators in the accelerator and experiment domains. This has allowed to validate detailed performance requirements in terms of communication and distributed architecture.
