10th International Visible Conference on Educational Studies & Applied Linguistics 2019, 2019
Alienation is one of the controversial terms that has as much as definitions as the number of social sciences. Many classical writers used alienation as a theme of their writings because of its significance in the life of human beings. Yet, in the modern age, the phenomenon has not lost its significance and It drew the attention of many researchers and writers to write about it. This paper is an attempt to explore this phenomenon in one of the novels of the Afghan-American writer Khalid Hosseini. First, the term is illustrated and some definitions are provided. Then the Researcher references to the Melvin Seeman's five variants of alienation (powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, isolation, and self-estrangement) and uses them as a framework for discussing and understanding the way the term is treated by the novelist. The researcher tries to investigate how the novelist treated with this phenomenon in And the Mountain Echoed and how reflects in the life of the characters. Many characters in the story go through alienation and they feel isolated from their environment , things, other people and even themselves. I try to find out the source of their alienation and how it affects the course of their lives.

ABSTRACT This article aims to provide a discussion on the nature of the identification process of the individual in general and on that of the Turkish national identity in particular through the exploration of the great Turkish author, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’s literary works. This study illustrates that Tanpınar differs significantly from the early Republican authors of his time by the competence of his conceptualization of identity issue besides his artistic mastery. Moreover the author’s conceptualization of identity catches the intellectual level of the contemporary poststructuralist thinkers who show that identity as a sign or process of signification which is subject to constant transformation. In this respect, the article also offers discussions on the differences of the conceptualization of identity between Tanpınar and the early Republican thinkers and on the similarities between him and contemporary poststructuralist thinkers. It is argued that such an inquisition into the Tanpınar’s works provide us a more competent understanding of the nature of the Turkish national identity and its conditions of its possibility, that is to say the Turkish modernization process.

This paper examines Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’s diary to bring new interpretations to Tanpınar’s novels. Since its publication in 2007, the diary has been at the center of many discussions, most of which remained as analysis on Tanpınar’s sore remarks on people around him. However, there are several remarks which might bring new interpretations to his other texts, especially to his novels. It often gives clear clues about how the characters of a novel are produced, how the context is designed, and on top of that how the writer comes up with this kind of fictional universe. Therefore, the diary can be a guide to interpret or reinterpret the novels. This article aims to bring a new perspective to Tanpınar’s novels by analyzing his remarks in the diary.
