Scope and constraints for tree planting in the irrigated landscapes of the Aral Sea Basin: case studies in Khorezm Region, Uzbekistan

2006

A wealth of research papers, reports, and newsprint demonstrate the wide international interest in the ecological deterioration in the Aral Sea Basin in Central Asia (CA). The demise of the Aral Sea is a symptom that results from intensive agricultural activities aiming at maximizing agricultural production while neglecting environmental sustainability, as exemplified by the land use patterns also prevalent in the Republic of Uzbekistan, one of the five newly established states in CA. The environmental degradation is acute and continues, since various factors conducive to it have not been eradicated. This discussion paper deals with the potential role of forestry-based production systems and in their contribution to counterbalancing the ecological landscape demise in the region. This discussion paper starts with a brief overview of environmental conditions in CA, followed by a discussion of forestry and agroforestry in CA's irrigated semi-arid and arid landscapes. The paper foc...

The Status of the Riparian Forests in the Naryn Valley of Kyrgyzstan: Conservation and Sustainable Development

Grassroots Journal of Natural Resources, 2022

Conservation and restoration of riparian forests are important for strengthening river banks and preserving biodiversity as well as for mitigating impacts of climate change. Increasing temperature and climate variability, flooding and drought, alteration of the intensity of precipitation and melting glaciers in high mountain areas affect the physical condition of natural resources as well as natural hazards. Climate change might cause larger and potentially hazardous summer floods. The temporary storage of floodwaters in the floodplain areas reduces the flood risk downstream. In this paper, the current state of natural resources and the benefits of mountain floodplain forests is investigated. The satellite imagery was used to study the landscape changes for mapping the investigation areas. The assessment of changes is necessary for the further development of restorative plan for floodplain rivers. The results provide information on options for management and provide assistance to th...

Functional zoning of the Kazakhstan ’ s part of the Caspian Sea shore for optimization of nature management

2014

The problems of functional use of the territory of the Kazakhstan's part of the Caspian Sea shore within Atyrau and Mangystau regions of Kazakhstan with an emphasis on resource supply and features of the economic development of lands are considered in the article. The result of the analysis of the socio-economic conditions and ecological state of the environmental components of the Kazakhstan's part of the Caspian Sea shore, affecting natural and resource potential, are given. The methodology is examined and geo-information mapping of functional zoning of the study area is carried out. [Akiyanova F. Z., Temirbayeva R.K., Bekkuliyeva A.A. ECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS IN THE REPUBLIC OF KAZAKHSTAN AND THE WAYS OF SOLVING THEM

This article examines the environmental problems of some Central Asian countries associated with the intensive development of the resources of the Caspian Sea shelf, the degradation of the Aral Sea ecosystem, the functioning of mining and metallurgical industries in the Fergana Valley, deforestation, the use of subalpine meadows and steppes for agricultural land, the construction of various hydraulic structures in combination with agricultural development of the territory, intensification of agriculture, which lead to the climate change, ozone layer depletion, biodiversity reduction, desertification and land degradation, destruction of the ecosystem balance of our planet. The main directions of the solution of environmental problems of the region are considered through the development and consistent, maximum effective implementation of the state environmental policy for the formation of modern environmental legislation corresponding to the requirements of the time, the creation of an optimal system of state management of environmental management and protection of the environment, ensuring the optimal financing for rational use of natural resources and environmental protection, high effect investment in environmental protection, attracting the broad sections of the population to the environmental protection, organizing the environmental monitoring at the local and regional levels, educating the environmental literacy, environmental culture and environmental awareness in the human being, and focused training of environmental specialists in the fields of techniques, technology, law, sociology, biology, hydrology in the countries of Central Asia and Kazakhstan.

Vegetation monitoring in the South Aral Sea region by remote sensing and GIS

E3S Web of Conferences

Vegetation plays an important role in the study of the environment at the local level. Because plants help to understand the negative changes taking place in the region in a timely manner. One of the most effective ways to get reliable and high-quality information about the condition of plants in a short time is remote sensing. The research selected one of the southern Aral Sea regions of Uzbekistan, which is closest to the dried-up part of the Aral Sea. The research examined changes in the condition of water bodies and sparse and dense vegetation over the past 9 years. The research was conducted using ArcGIS software from the family of modern GIS technologies, using data from Landsat 8. Based on the data obtained from these methods, it was found that the water sources and sparse and dense vegetation areas change over months and years. At the same time, depending on the level of vegetation cover, the periods of agricultural pasture use and fodder harvesting were determined. Using th...
