Polish conceptualism of the 1960s and 1970s Images, objects, systems and texts

The 1960s were a period defined by enormous changes throughout the visual arts in Poland. Early in the decade a neo-Constructivist identity began to dominate the area of avant-garde painting, largely displacing late 1950s informel, in part to repudiate the period of Socialist Realism (1948-55), and reaffirm a continuity with the 'authentic' example of the interwar Avant-garde. In this article I would like to focus more closely on the new proliferation of unusual concrete poetry, textual projects, and intermedial works, which then proceeded to develop from the midst of a context which until that point had been defined more by abstract painting than anything else

Performance – Cinema – Sound. Perspectives and Retrospectives in Central and Eastern Europe, 2020
In this essay I would like to consider the tension between communication and perception in Polish poetry after 1989. The poets I will discuss avail themselves of the expressive means of the visual and performing arts as well as music to convey their negotiations of communication and perception. But it is a special avatar of the poet that stages the drama in which perception and communication clash – the derelict. The poet-derelict occupies the space between the arts. I propose that the transformation of this derelict figure from Świetliki to Penerstwo to Rozdzielczość Chleba’s “cyber-drunks” (cyberżulerstwo) illustrates the history of Polish poetry and Polish art after 1989, which is at the same time a story of the dissolution of the tension between perception and communication.

Writing an academic history of Polish art was an urgent task of art historians after World War I, when the country regained its political independence. An important and creditable achievement in that respect was a study by Michał Walicki and Juliusz Starzyński, published in 1934 as a kind of supplement to the monumental Geschichte der Kunst von der altchristlichen Zeit bis zur Gegenwart by the Marburg historian Richard Hamann, translated at that time into Polish. In 1936, the work of the Polish scholars was published again in the form of a separate book. The paper focuses on three problems that were addressed in it: the cultural and artistic ties of Poland to the West, the vernacular features of Polish art, and the presence of the “Eastern art” in Polish artistic heritage. The author examines also the question whether those issues were related to the political, social, and cultural reality of the Second Polish Republic.
Warsaw Plakatodrom: The Poster in the Iconosphere of the City 1955-1989

Prominent Polish graphic artist Roman Cieślewicz has referred to Poland as the “Plakatodrom [The land of posters] … the largest testing ground of the poster in Europe,” positing Poland as a unique place of poster experimentation, design, and display. As components of everyday life, posters are elements of the city’s skin, history of art, visual culture and political discourses. More than mere ephemera and colourful artefact, posters are visual and material indexes for particular moments in time, and as such significant objects of research inquiry into iconosphere of the city and its everyday. This dissertation seeks to consider the uniqueness of Polish poster within its various sites of display and circulation: in the city, in the museum dedicated to poster art, in filmic imagery, on pages of albums and exhibition catalogues, and on what is considered here a unique international platform for poster distribution, the seminal visual arts and design journal Projekt. Each of these distribution ‘surfaces’ – following the notion of ‘design surface’ proposed by Jacques Rancière – participates differently in the visibility of the poster and its relationships to its sites of display, or as it will be argued, topo-sensitive aspects of poster-art. This interest in the placement of the poster locates much of this research in the city of Warsaw positing this city’s unique role in the dynamism and experimentation Cieślewicz suggests in his notion of plakatodrom. The presence of posters in the filmic imagery of Andrzej Wajda will guide this study through its historically organised sections. Chapter One: Muzeum Plakatu w Wilanowie will present a discussion of the Muzeum Plakatu w Wilanowie as a seminal site of display and circulation framed by the international posters of Wajda’s War Trilogy films and the Poster Biennale as a significant moment in the history of the poster. Chapter 2: Pokolenie and Surfaces of Resistance is situated by Wajda’s film Pokolenie [A Generation,1955] and will reference the poster in regard to the graphic tradition of wall writing and the wartime history of the city. Chapter Three : Niewinni czarodzieje & Times of Transition will consider Niewinni czarodzieje [Innocent Sorcerers, 1960] in observing Warsaw during a time of its transformations towards the Modern city following the 1955 Festival of Students and Youth and the political Thaw of 1956. Chapter Four: Człowiek z żelaza & the ImageXtext, oriented around Człowiek z żelaza [Man of Iron, 1981], will frame a discussion of the surfaces of resistance and the poster’s role in political protest. The penultimate chapter Danton & the Scream, will be guided by Danton [1983], nvestigating the surface of the poster itself to explore the presence and amplification of sound within the poster through the poetry of Czesław Miłosz and Zbigniew Herbert alongside the sung poetry of jacek Kaczmarski. The first three chapters function as a loose section oriented around sites of display and the street while the final two chapters consider ‘Sounds of Freedom.’ The final chapter, Powidoki: An Afterimage in Lie of a Conclusion, is loosely informed by Wajda’s last film, Powidoki [Afterimage, 2016] observing the ‘afterimages’ of the poster, its legacy in the contemporary iconosphere of Warsaw and will consider the ways text and image present events and discourses on the surface of the city.

Chopin and the Warsaw literati – part two

Chopin's life in Warsaw fell at a time of important phenomena and processes in history, the arts, aesthetics, etc. This article deals with the artistic and social milieu to which the composer belonged and looks at the question of the common artistic imagination and aesthetic ideas elaborated within that environment, based on the example of Chopin and two poets: Stefan Witwicki and Dominik Magnuszewski. Chopin's relationship with Witwicki, which gave rise to his songs to the poet's texts and lasted into their time in exile, is considered in respect to discussion on folk culture that was ongoing at that time. That culture was treated as a sign of the nobly archaic or else as a manifestation of modern art, of the "art of the future". These convictions did not function as alternatives; their overlapping characterised various aspects of early romanticism. The output of Magnuszewski, meanwhile, shows the transformation of traditional figures of rhetoric into Romantic means of expression. It displays a style of writing that constitutes an act of Romantic hermeneutics in respect to the language of tradition. Avoiding simple comparisons of works of very different artistic level and significance, the author analyses Chopin's relationships with the two poets by reference to the generational experience-as variously understood-of creative artists born during the first decade of the nineteenth century, which connected artists of different levels of talent and varying individual fortunes.
