Agricultural workers have a high risk of occupational injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. However, there are very few standardized tools available to assess safety and health in agricultural operations. Additionally, there are a number of groups of agricultural workers, including Hmong refugees and immigrants, for which virtually no information on safety and health conditions is available. This study developed an observation-based methodology for systematically evaluating occupational health and safety hazards in agriculture, and pilot-tested this on several small-scale Hmong farming operations. Each observation assessed of range of safety and health hazards (e.g., musculoskeletal hazards, dust and pollen, noise, and mechanical hazards), as well as on factors such as type of work area, presence of personal protective equipment, and weather conditions. Work-Related Health and Safety Challenges of Rice Irrigation Farmworkers

Workers in the agricultural sector face several work-related health and safety challenges, similar to what workers in other high-risk sectors experience. However, there is a dearth of research efforts in the informal agricultural sector regarding the health and safety of farmworkers. The present paper explored the common work-related health and safety challenges that rice farmworkers in major irrigation schemes in southern Ghana experienced. The paper also explored the attitude and extent of personal protective equipment usage among rice farmworkers. Data were obtained from 11 key informants selected from three irrigation schemes and transcribed verbatim for analysis. Analysis of the data involved theoretical thematic analysis of Braun and Clarke. Indian Farm workers are highly involved in various agricultural operations. They perform a sequential work through manual efforts. In the present investigation efforts have been made to assess the occupational risk related to various agriculture activities and to compare the physical strength of male and female farm workers, during manual method to perform agricultural operations. For the study, twenty female and twenty male subjects were selected. From this study, it has been recommended that there is dire need to create awareness among the farm workers about the low cost improved technologies related to flower cultivation which can significantly improve the livelihood security and working conditions of farm workers. It will also reduce the level of occupational risk and enhance the physical strength of the workers.
Evaluating occupational hazards and personal protective equipment use on farms in Kyrgyzstan

Objectives – The purpose of this study was to identify occupational hazards and personal protective equipment use on farms operating in Kyrgyzstan. Methods – We recruited 20 farmers in Kyrgyzstan. They completed a questionnaire and responded to interview questions to determine their occupational hazards, personal protective equipment use, and work-related injuries. We measured noise levels using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health sound level meter application for Apple iOS. Results – Most farmers reported knowing how and when to use personal protective equipment, however 95 percent had not received training on how to use them. Observation of farmers revealed gaps in protective equipment use. Farmers reported workplace injury (15 percent) and one farmer reported time off due to the injury. — Agriculture is an important sector that has big impact to the society thus a program that can keep its sustainability is needed, especially in term of productivity. The focus of this study was risk management of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) in rice farmers in Ngrendeng Village, Ngawi, East Java in 2012 with analyze hazard and risk on activities and workplaces. This study was a semi-quantitative analitical descriptive with observational approach using Australian Standard/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS) 4360:2004 about risk management. Analysis was made based on whole farming processes observed and information from village headman, a land and farm machines owner, and 5 farmers.
