Music Technology and Production Processes in Macedonia

Music technology can be described in the simplest way as the fusion of music, art, and technology. The word “technology” derives from the two Greek words “techne” and, of course, “logos”. “Techne” translates as “craftsmanship”, but also is distinct from episteme or “knowledge”. “Technology” may therefore be complementary to “epistemology”, and so embodies the human knowledge of solving problems by way of the design of standard tools, machines, materials or the process thereof. Problems that are thus solved are often real: that is to say, they have a physical existence. Humanity has been applying technology in this sense for at least 40.000 years. In terms of music technology, musical instruments like a violin, an Indonesian gamelan or an Indian sarangi are masterworks of technology. In the last 50 years electrical and electronic engineering started blending with music in the form of new musical instruments as well as new ways of music production. Music and technology have since then developed together and advanced a great deal, particularly with the use of digital technology. To better understand Music Technology we have to first understand Creative Industries. Creative industries can be easily explained as fusion of creative arts and technology. “Art has been a creative refuge for other unsatisfied ideals created by the brain through its abstractive process, thus hastening our cultural evolution.” Semir Zeki (Artistic Creativity and the Brain) In the UK creative industries are a real success story. They are worth more than £36 billion a year, they generate £70,000 every minute for the UK economy, and they employ 1.5 million people in the UK. In the Netherlands, the creative industry sector has 9700 companies, the highest number for any key sector. The creative industries comprise 11 percent of small businesses and 47 percent of workers are self-employed. In Macedonia, the Ministry of Culture for the first time addressed the mapping of the creative industries in 2009, when with the support of the British Council the first strategic document was published that highlights the role of this important sector. Creative industries transform creativity into economic potential and enable the creation of new jobs. With the right support, creative industries have the potential to bring more benefits to the culture and economy of Macedonian society. 1 Music Technology & Production Processes in Macedonia Creative industries can include music, performing arts, film, television, radio, advertising, games and interactive content, writing, publishing, engineering, design, and visual arts. All of these fields are in some aspects connected with music. A variety of tools, approaches, and production processes are required in each case to integrate music aspects. Applying the tools of technology, especially computers, computer applications and electronic devices in the process of composing, recording, performing and storing music is called Music Technology. Music Technology connects and encourages interaction between artistic and technological creativity as well research and exploring. Developing various music technology tools is related to the need for personal aesthetics and musical expression. The use of technology can be commercial and experimental. Music technology has provided an awareness of the creative potential of sound in modern culture as well a connection through analysis and manipulation of the sound with other form of expression like visual and performing arts and digital media in general. This does not mean that using music technology is restricted to a specific musical genre, because it is equally important in all genres of popular music, jazz, and experimental music, as well as in modern contemporary music and the performing and visual arts. The concept of music technology is growing daily because of people’s need to find new forms of expression through music, which leads to the constant inventing of new technological devices for this purpose. “The fastest-growing segment of the music industry is in technology . . . An instructional focus that gives someone the direct knowledge they need to be one step ahead in this competitive environment is invaluable.” Jim Boitnott 98” (Vice President of Business Development, Notion Music)

The role of information technology in the practice of polyphonic singing and playing at the time of COVID-19 virus pandemic: the case of Serbia, 2022

The COVID- 19 pandemic affected the lives of people across the globe in various ways. Physical distance as one of the main preventive measures has greatly influenced the practice of polyphonic singing and playing globally. In this paper, the focus is on the situation in Serbia. The research covers the challenges faced by professional musicians, students and amateurs. Previous different forms of music cooperation (choir rehearsals, instrumental groups, music lessons, etc.) have been transferred to the internet sphere, to different platforms (Skype, Zoom, etc.). During many days of isolation, the need for connection and singing together, even over the internet, was a spiritual cure for a part of the population and a way to preserve mental stability. The crisis situation, with the help of modern technologies, has led to a greater connection of people who are engaged in polyphonic singing and playing in various countries. This virtual international collaboration has yielded interesting results at many levels. One of the goals of this research is to indicate the advantages and disadvantages of this way of musical communication, how the actors themselves experience it and whether it will continue after the end of the pandemic.

The role of the teacher has changed as the traditional education methods, techniques and applications have left its place to the student-centered methods, techniques and applications along with the 21st century. Teachers are no more source and share the information but they do guide students to access information and manage the process. Today, it has become an inevitable requirement that a teacher who guide his student should follow technological developments in his field; master and use the technology in the classroom and integrate it to his lessons.
