Sustainability and Business Behaviour: The Role of Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) means commitment and actions beyond compliance by the integration of social and environmental concerns into companies´ business operation. The actors of economy, especially the companies have a basic role in fulfilling the goal of sustainability. In the threefold system of sustainability those companies would only be successful which are responsible to build social and environmental concerns into their strategy. In the present article we overview the development of CSR, the CSR policy of the European Union and investigate its relation to sustainable development and describe why it can be interpreted as a measure to get closer to sustainability.

Sustainable development has provided a significant conceptual approach for the solutions of problems on the triangle of industrialization, urbanization, and population increase. In order to advance the current and future welfare of its members, European Union (EU) has worked to build its development model on the principles of sustainability. The involvement of business organizations to this process is viewed critical to achieve the overarching sustainability principle. However the adoption of sustainability seems to be more problematic among the organizations in the new member and candidate states. The aim of current study is to discuss why and how corporate social responsibility (CSR) can provide a useful framework for these countries in their integration process to EU's sustainability policy. In the study, after examining the current understanding of CSR in these countries, a network oriented approach is proposed to contribute to the generation of a sustainable future in an enlarged Europe.

Although ideas and discussions about the social responsibility of business have a long history, the debate over what is known under the label ofCSR (corporate social responsibility) has only escalated worldwide in the last decade. This thesis describes the rise of CSR in Europe by exploring how and why the use of management rhetoric has acted as important means of gaining business acceptance. Arguably, Europe is the most vibrant region for CSR development, and the idea has been embraced by the European Union and national governments for strategic reasons. Forward-looking companies have started to discover CSR as an opportunity for innovation, growth, sustainability and competitiveness. Consequently, the acceptance and adoption of CSR has also initiated organisational change. Corporate Social Responsibility across Europe: A Good example from the Nordic Countries?

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) gains special relevance during last years, due to the modification of the international framework that business must deal with. It is considered as a particular business attitude, but from the European Union CSR is presented as an opportunity for businesses competitiveness at the same time they contribute to sustainable development, so they try to create a European reference framework. In this article we will analyze the situation of CSR in several European countries, not only from the point of view of business behaviour, but including the possible strategies and regulatory or guidance public frameworks of the countries considered, and we will wonder about the convenience or not of the existence of these common frameworks. We will review the different initiatives being developed at international level, paying special attention to actions by Northern European countries, which are obtaining very positive results, although still limited.
