Research on reef fishes of coral reefs of Tuhaha Bay Waters, Saparua Island was conducted on January 2016. Eleven stations of coral reef habitat were chosen randomly for this study and were observed by using underwater visual census method. The transect area of 250 m 2 (50 m length, 5 m width) was established at each station and reef fish found in each transect was identified to the species level using reference literature. At least 35 families of reef fish which consist of 105 genera and 243 species were found during the study. Those reef fish species found can be categorized into target species (77 species), major species (143 species) and indicator species (23 species). Coral Fish Diversity Index (CFDI) determined based on six main families indicate that relative diversity of reef fish in the study area can be classified into very poor to poor categories. Reef Fish Diversity in Jayapura City, Indonesia: A Preliminary Study

As one of the marine areas included in the world's Coral Triangle region, Yos Sudarso Bay have a potential reef fish diversity that needs to be studied. However, there is very little information about reef fish diversity in these waters to date. This study aims to determine the species diversity of reef fish in Yos Sudarso Bay, Jayapura City, Indonesia. The study was conducted in April 2020 at seven sites; six of them located inside the Yos Sudarso Bay and one more located outside the bay. Sampling was carried out using the Underwater Visual Census method (25 m long and 5 m wide). Relative abundance by species, and diversity (H´), evenness (E), and dominance (C) indices were calculated. A total of 1,075 individual reef fish was recorded in seven study sites, representing 122 species and 26 families. Locations showed differences in reef fish abundance (86 to 215 individuals/125 m 2), diversity (H´= 2.462 to 3.358), evenness (E = 0.770 to 0.887), and dominance (C = 0.047 to 0.155). This study has provided preliminary information on species diversity, fish abundance, and the ecological index of reef fish in Yos Sudarso Bay, Jayapura City.
Potency of reef fishes in Tuhaha bay waters, Central Maluku Regency, Maluku Province, Indonesia

The research aimed to provide data on taxa composition, density, standing stock and potency of reef fishes at Tuhaha bay waters in 2017. There were 35 families, 105 genera and 243 species of reef fishes found in Tuhaha bay. Four areas of coral reef at good until excellent categories and various habitat had high species richness of reef fishes. Species richness, density and standing stock of major reef fishes species were higher than target and indicator species. Potency (biomass) of economically food fish (target species) ranged from 1.65 - 5.59 tons ha−1 of coral reef (total 2.93 tons ha−1). Total potency, Maximum Sustainable Yield and Allowable Total Catch of economically food fish in 389,70 ha of Tuhaha bay coral reef area were 1,141.82, 590.91 and 456.73 tons, respectively. The status of reef fishes in two coral reef areas belonged to a high category, while the other nine areas had a moderate category.

Reef fish is one benchmark to determine a coral reef ecosystem's biodiversity. Reef fish communities are important in coral reef ecosystems because of their trophic relationships with other biotic components. The aim of this study was to determine the biodiversity of reef fish on Halang Melingkau Island, Kotabaru District, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. This research was conducted in March-August 2019. Bontang sea waters is a part of Coral Triangle. Information and data on the coral fish community in that waters are still a few, therefore this study aimed to identify the species composition and structure of the coral fish community in the study area. Data collection performed using visual census method in the area of Kedindingan island, Melahing island, and Gusung Sapa Segajah. The fish were observed for species and abundance in the depth range from 4m-6m. In total, 1.162 of coral fish has been found in this study, consisted of 228 species from 21 families. Among them, there were 33 species of target fish (consumable), 80 species of Major fish (ornament), and 14 species of indicator fish from family Chaetodontidae. Biodiversity index (H’) ranges from 2,29 to3,02. Similarity index (E) ranges between 0,60 to 0,84. Dominance index ( C) ranges between 0,08 to 0,25.

Coral reef ecosystem is known as an important place to live various types of fish, where coral conditions will affect the diversity and abundance of the fish. In healthy coral reef ecosystems generally can be found many types of fish with high density. This research aims to investigate the diversity and abundance of coral fishes at Saebus Island, East Java. The observation conducted at 4 stations, according to cardinal point by UVS (underwater visual census) methods with belt transect with the visibility of 2,5 m horizontally, and 5 m vertically. The length of transect was 100 m parallel with coastline, with the area of observation is 500 m2. The censuses were conducted at 2 different depths (3 and 10 m). Indonesia has abundant underwater natural resources, including coral reefs. Among coral reef ecosystems, reef fish make an important contribution to supporting the sustainability of underwater life. The more diverse reef fish in an ecosystem, it shows the healthier the condition of the coral reef ecosystem. The objective of the study was to investigate the diversity of the reef fish community including abundance, diversity, evenness, and dominance index in Ulee Kareung waters, Simpang Mamplam Sub-district, Bireuen District, Indonesia. We used a visual census technique (VCT)-belt transect by using a 50-meter transect and 3 times repetition at three observation stations. The composition and diversity of coral reef fishes play an essential role in the ecosystem (Mumby et al. 2004). Runtuboi et al. (2018) explained that the condition of coral reefs determines reef fish composition and diversity. In the coral reef ecosystem, reef fishes are the most abundant organisms (Nybakken 1982). The high diversity of reef fishes impacts various and complex habitats in the coral reef ecosystem. Therefore, the reef fish diversity is an important indicator of the health level of coral reef ecosystems (Adrim et al. 2012; Hourigan et al. 1988). Bell and Galzin (1984) also explained that changes in the diversity of reef fish communities could indicate changes in the ecosystem. Coral reef ecosystems positively correlate with reef fish diversity (Bengen 2013; Marshel and Mumby 2015). Besides playing an essential role as an environmental health indicator, the existence of reef fish is also a source of livelihood for the community living on the coast and small islands. Reef fish diversity will help accumulate more ecological service capital (eco-service capital) and is also used to evaluate the various impacts of human activities on ecosystem function (Eduardo et al. 2018; Palumbi et al. 2009; Paulangan et al. 2019). Reef fish is one of the aquatic organisms that correlates significantly in the coral reef ecosystem. There is an excellent coral reef ecosystem that can increase reef fish production. The primary function of the coral reef ecosystem for the reef life is as a spawning ground, nursery ground, and feeding ground. Smith (1978) and Rondonuwu et al. (2019) revealed that one describing the complexity of coral reef habitat structure is the abundance of individual coral reef fish. This study aimed to fill the gap of knowledge on this group of fishes by estimating the natural stock, species composition and biodiversity of target reef fishes from three regencies; Alor, East Flores (Flores Timur) and Southwest Maluku (Maluku Barat Daya/MBD) using underwater visual census method. A total of 176 species belong to 19 families of economically important target fish were recorded from 62 survey sites. The highest estimated stock is located in Southwest Maluku Regency-based on both abundance and biomass values, followed by Alor Regency and the lowest in East Flores Regency. Target fish species from the family of Caesionidae has the highest composition both based on abundance (74%) and biomass (40%). The highest species composition of target fish is from Pterocaesio tile (57.65%) which is more than 50% of the overall target fish. Community structure of target fish in the three regencies is still in a relatively good condition based on diversity index (H'), evenness (E) and no domination (C) of a single species occurs inside the target fish community, with exception in Alor Regency where the community of target fish is indicated to be under pressure. Biodiversity index by Bray-Curtis analysis in each location shows that most of the sites have the similarity of 67.51%, suggesting that there is not much difference in terms of target fish community structure between the three regencies.

Spelman Strait is one of the potential reef fisheries. This study aims to examine the potential of reef fisheries in the Spelman Strait. The data used in this study are primary data to determine the abundance of reef fish and the use of PaST (Paleontological Statistics) tools to assess diversity, Evenness, wealth, and dominance indices. The results showed that live coral cover from all observation stations was 37.71%. The abundance of reef fish has been under pressure, the diversity index still has good but some families experience threats, the Evenness index value also still shows an even distribution but there are several families threatened, the wealth index still describes good species wealth, but the distribution is uneven, while the dominance index value illustrates that the condition of the coral reef ecosystem is under pressure. This condition is caused by destructive fishing so that the existence of some economically important targeted fish is threatened.
