FACTORS INFLUENCINg READINg LITERACy AT THE PRImARy SCHOOL LEVEL
abstract The objective of this paper is to find out the reasons behind the low level of reading literacy among primary school students. The data from IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement) Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2001 are analyzed. And the main conclusions are drawn that the socioeconomic situation of the family has a great impact on students reading literacy as well as parents' education and reading aloud to a child at the preschool age. Students high achieving in reading literacy usually like reading for their own enjoyment and come from families where parents spend a lot of time on reading.

The reading habits of children are affected by the penetration of electronic devices, social media applications and games. Hence, there is general decline in reading habits / culture in society and specifically among children. In this situation, the current study will look into the factors influencing children reading habits. The study is a significant support in relevant literature by reporting contributing factors related to children, family, and teacher in developing reading habits among children. The beneficiaries are children, their families, school teachers as well as school administrators to appropriately use the methods and techniques to inculcate reading habits.
A Study on the Factors Affecting Reading and Reading Habits of Preschool Children

In the developing world, reading habit, which is one of the first habits of traditional education, continues primarily in the family and then in kindergartens. In this research, factors such as family, environment, kindergarten and libraries are discussed in terms of acquiring reading habit in preschool period and evaluations are made about the effects of these factors on reading habit. In this study, the results of the research on the factors in the reading habit of Ishık Kindergarten students of Ronaki Hawler Education Company in Erbil, Iraq are included. Within the scope of the research, one-on-one interviews were conducted with 106 children in the six-year age group who were closest to starting primary school among the kindergarten students and 20 kindergarten teachers and a questionnaire was conducted. In this process, the kindergarten was observed. Then, the data obtained from the questionnaires were analyzed in SPSS program. In addition, structured interviews provided information about activities that aimed at acquiring reading habits of kindergarten teachers. In the conclusion part of the study, the data obtained were evaluated in terms of the factors that enable children to acquire reading habits. The results of the study showed that families have a guiding role in having the children acquire the reading habit. In addition, it was concluded that the group of friends, the environment, various books and genres, kindergarten education and libraries were other important elements in this preparation period.
Supporting Urgent Basic Reading Skills in Children in Africa and Around the World

Even in the 21 st century, the need of support in literacy acquisition around the world remains huge. Data presented in a UNESCO-commissioned report (Education for All, 2014) estimates that 250 million children worldwide need reading support, with the largest number of countries in need located in Sub-Saharan Africa. Having poor reading skills is a huge problem for the individuals themselves as well as their societies. In today's information societies, the majority of learning materials are mediated via written text. Thus, literacy is vital for individuals' quality of life, their educations, career choices, and thus to the world economy and the development of democracy. In all societies and in all age groups, the implications of poor reading skills are both personal and societal. Yet although the outcome (poor reading skills) is the same, the root causes are varied and complex. Research has shown convincingly that deficiencies in reading skills run in families (e.g., Wood & Grigorenko, 2001). This means that many, if not the majority, of individuals with serious difficulty in acquiring fluent reading skills (i.e., people with dyslexia) have genetic foundations to their vulnerability toward a deficit in reading and spelling skills. Around the world up to 15% of people suffer from this genetic reading difficulty (e.g., Shaywitz & Shaywitz, 2003). Furthermore, many individuals fail to learn to read as the result of environmental factors: no access to schools, inadequate instruction, and/or limited or no access to reading materials. These are specific problems facing developing countries. Yet no matter the root of reading difficulties, in most cases, targeted intervention, supported with learning technologies, can improve the level of reading skill over time. The foundation for understanding the learning process for reading has its roots in Finnish research that began in the early 1990s at the University of Jyväskylä (JYU), in collaboration between the university's Department of Psychology and the Niilo Mäki Institute (NMI). 1 The initial research involved the study of children with familial risk for dyslexia. This paper is just a review that the tendency to read a book decreases among the teenagers. School students do not have reading habits to acquire the knowledge of their subjects or studies. The habit of reading is essential for widening the experience and knowledge. They should be provided or facilitated with good and interesting books which are of moral content-value. The habit of reading helps in developing the mind and personality of a person, providing insights into human problems, and influencing attitudes and behavior. Teachers or parents have to develop the habit of reading among the children from an early age.

Book is the window of the world, it is a reflection that reminds us of the importance of reading books for various knowledge sciences. However, the book will only be a dead item that is useless if we do not read it. The problem is not everyone likes to read. Interest in reading in our country, especially Interest in reading of children until now can be said is still quite apprehensive. Based on data from the UNESCO percentage, Indonesia’s reading interest is only 0.01 percent, that meaning from 10,000 children only one child who has a reading interest. 21st century has become an era of great change for human life demanding the mastery of various skills essential to global competition. The opportunity of this country to compete with other countries to become more advanced and developed will be smaller if the quality of the next generation of the nation is also minimal because there is no effort to improve the quality of self by reading.
