In the last few years, the digitization of the archival-documentary heritage has become a leading priority worldwide for all institutions committed to its safeguarding. The benefits couldn't be clearer and they can be seen in many aspects: better storage, safeguarding and promotion, Internet accessibility, etc. As a EU member, Bulgaria is no exception to this trend. The Bulgarian institutions of the so-called GLAM sector are definitely aware of the benefits to digitization and they take part in the digitization process of records and their uploading online. The main aim of the proposed paper is the presentation of the digitization carried out so far in three leading Bulgarian institutions of memory: the Archives State Agency, the National Library "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" and the National Museum of History. The three institutions are leading in their professional activity and should demonstrate good practices for regional institutes-archives, libraries and museums. What has been done so far will be presented and a comparative analysis will be carried out. The emphasis on the introduction of digitization in the three leading Bulgarian institutions is to identify their adopted standards and good practices in digitization. One important outcome of the research will be the analysis of the quantitative indicators in relation to the digitization of archival-documentary heritage. The institutions will be compared, both among each other and with similar institutes from other European countries (in particular UK institutions). The aim is to gain a more realistic picture of the success of the Bulgarian institutions in terms of digitization and access to information resources through the Internet. The strengths and weaknesses of the digitization of archival heritage in Bulgaria will be outlined. In conclusion recommendations will be made hopefully of practical use to institutions in continuation of their work on digitization: acquaintance with international good practices, working with unified standards, improvement of communication among them, exchange of experts and experience, etc.

Digitalizing the Proceedings of the Bulgarian Museums, or How to Rescue from Oblivion Priceless Studies on the Cultural Heritage

2016

The priceless knowledge from the scientific periodicals, published by Bulgarian museums, has fallen into oblivion over the years. In the era of electronic information, the opportunity arises this once lost knowledge to be made Open Access free of all restrictions on access. Upon digitilization and correct annotation of the museum paper editions followed by providing them on the Internet for free access, there will be offered scope for a more comprehensive study of the Bulgarian cultural heritage, an integral part of which are the works of its researchers. Registering content in platforms such as Europeana / Bulgariana and setting common standards to facilitate finding the information will be the next challenge for the followers of the idea of cultural heritage digital repositories.

Development of Archive System in Bulgaria

Arts and Music in Cultural Discourse. Proceedings of the International Scientific and Practical Conference

Both Latvian and foreign researchers emphasise the importance of memory institutions (libraries, archives, museums, etc.) in the development of the world view of the public and the basic understanding of cultural values, and a document, which is a primary information carrier in the time and space, is a significant element of culture. The different history of development of various states determined the different peculiarities of the archive systems and their functions in the past and up to nowadays. Studying the specifics of development of archive systems in other countries gives us basis for gaining new experiences and developing cooperation, adopting the positive experience and seeking opportunities to provide access to the documentary heritage for the public needs. We compare the outcomes of the Bulgarian experience to the Lund principles manifesting the current European trends in digital preservation and access to cultural heritage.

Electronic Research Infrastructure for Bulgarian Medieval Written Heritage: history and perspectives

Electronic Research Infrastructure for Bulgarian Medieval Written Heritage: History and Perspectives, 2021

The paper traces the history of the Histdict system, which turned into a basis for the new Electronic Research Infrastructure for Bulgarian Medieval Written Heritage, which was included into the National Research Roadmap at the end of 2020. Through this act the state declares its support to our resources, that have been so far created and supported by project funding. And of course, it is a big recognition of our efforts and achievements. On the other hand, this act coincided with two other events: the inclusion of RESILIENCE (Research Infrastructure on Religious Studies) in which Histdict is taking part, in the European Research Infrastructures Roadmap and the start of the updating and upgrading of the system. Given the situation the Infrastructure is now facing new challenges-not only the successful improvement of the services it offers, but also the inclusion of the Orthodox Cultural Heritage into European research exchange, which will promote and popularize the history and culture of Southeastern Europe.

DIGITALIZATION OF THE REPERTOIRE OF BOOKS FROM THE BULGARIAN REVIVAL (1801–1878)

The study presents a project aiming to create a methodology for digitalization of the retrospective bibliography (repertoire) of Bulgarian Revival books from the beginning of the 19th century until the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878. The fundamentality of the research is determined by the fact that the currently existing printed versions of the bibliographic array differ in structure, quantity and content which does not allow a fast and reliable analytic processing of the bibliographic information. The development of a methodology, testing and elaboration of information retrieval system which contains bibliographic information about the Bulgarian books issued from 1800 to 1878 will contribute considerably for the modernization and the accelerated development of many fields of the humanities and social sciences: general and cultural history, history of literature, book history, bibliography, library science. The new information retrieval system applies innovative methodology of the geographic information systems which visualizes bibliographic information and allows its utilization by means of topographic indexes. The elaboration of bibliographic database based on the principles of information retrieval systems and geographic information systems has a fundamental character for the development of the Bulgarian science and at the same time uses innovative methods, leading to sustained development of the scientific activities in the field of humanities and social sciences. The project team has taken into account the specifics of the Bulgarian book publishing during the 19th century (the books look much more like the European paleotypes from 16 th century than like the book publishing patterns in Europe during the same period) and the achievements of the modern bibliographic resources.
