The Leadership Orientations of the Students Receiving Sports Education in Turkey

International Education Studies, 2018

This research has been planned to identify the factors related to the assessment of “The Leadership Orientations” of the students receiving sports education (physical education and sports teacher, sports management, recreation, trainer education departments) in the universities in Turkey. This descriptive study has a population consisting of the students receiving sports education in the universities in Turkey and a sample of totally 1032 students (N: 1032) (who attend physical education and sports teacher, sports management, recreation, trainer education departments). The data has been collected using The Student Information Form and the Leadership Orientation Survey. According to the means of sub-scales of “Leadership Orientations by Sexes” obtained by the students receiving sports education, a significant difference has been identified between the frames of “Transformational Leadership” and “Charismatic Leadership”. This difference can be explained by the fact that male students consider themselves more competent compared to the female students in these two sub-scales. Consequently, when the mean points of the sub-scales of the Leadership Orientation Survey [Self] obtained by the students receiving sports education in Turkey are compared, it has been observed that the direction and strength of relation between sex, class, department and school is “positive” and “moderate” and also those students have “people-oriented leadership” characteristics among the sub-scales of the leadership orientation frames. Keywords: leadership, sports education, sports management

A Comparative Study of the Leadership Behavior of Freshman and Final Year Undergraduate Students

Asian journal of education and training, 2020

This study was conducted to examine the leadership levels of university students by comparing them according to various variables. In our research, both qualitative and quantitative methods were used with the scanning model. The universe of the study consisted of the freshman and final year undergraduate students studying at Akdeniz University in the 2019-20 academic year. A simple random sampling method was used to determine the study group. The research sample determined in this way was composed of 175 students studying in the first and last years of the Faculty of Sport Sciences, Teaching, Coaching, Management, and Recreation Departments, respectively. In this study, the Leadership Qualities Scale, which was developed by Cansoy and Turan (2016) and consists of 28 questions, was used. Kruskal Wallis H test and Mann-Whitney U tests, which are nonparametric, were used to analyze the data. The leadership level of the students was found to be high. A difference was determined in leadership sub-dimensions. To eliminate these differences; self-confidence levels of teaching, sports management, and recreation department students; the level of responsibility of the students of teaching, coaching and recreation departments; the reliability levels of male students and the persuasion skills of firstyear students should be increased.

Finally we found there were signif icant relationships between the sub-dimensions of the scales. Signif icant relationships were found between leadership orientations and social skill levels in general subdimensionsof family monthly income, department, mother education level and fathereducation level.

In this study, the Turkish version of Abbreviated Self-Leadership Questionnaire (ASLQ) was used as a data collection tool, but original ASLQ was developed by Houghton et al. (2012). The Turkish version of the scale was adopted by Şahin (2015). As a result of the reliability analysis, the Cronbach's alpha value was found to be .74. There was a significant difference between ASLQ total scores of students who choose the leadership course and do not choose (yes/no). There was a significant difference between students who choose the leadership course and do not choose (yes/no) and the subscale scores; behavior awareness and volition, constructive cognition, and task motivation. According to the results obtained through the analysis, hypothesis 1 and 2 were accepted.

This study investigated the relationship between gender, major and class level of students and their views on leadership styles. The study was carried out on students of Physical Education and Sports Academy (PESA) of Ordu University, between 2015 and 2016. PESA graduates work for schools, sports clubs and in different areas of sports as teachers, coaches, managers and sports writers. They exhibit various features of leadership in order to enable students, athletes or other individuals engaging in sports to achieve set goals and teach them to develop necessary behavioral patterns to sustain their success. The aim of this study is to reveal the relationship between gender, major and class level of PESA students and their views on leadership styles. The study was carried out with a total of 251 participants; 116 (46.2%) women and 125 (53.8%) men. The Leadership Style test scale developed by Frew et al. (1977) and adapted to Turkish by was used to assess this relationship. Data were analyzed using the SPSS, version 20. Frequency distributions were used to determine the demographic characteristics of the students. A chi-square analysis was performed to determine the relationship between the independent variables and leadership styles. The results indicate that there is no statistically significant relationship between students' gender and class levels and their views on leadership styles. The results show that there is a statistically significant relationship between students' majors and their views on leadership styles. Management students show features of moderately democratic leadership and features of very democratic leadership while teaching students do not. Another noteworthy finding is that students mainly display mixed features of leadership. It is suggested that courses on leadership be included in the curriculum of physical education and sports departments. Seminars, panels, congresses, etc. should be held to inform students on leadership and, moreover, they should be encouraged to participate in scientific studies. This study was orally presented at the 9th International Education Research Congress held at Ordu University between 11 and 14 May, 2017.

A Psychometric Analysis of an Inventory for Evaluating Students' Leadership Skills

Journal of Teaching and Teacher Education, 2016

This study reports on the exploration of psychometric properties of an Arabic version of leadership competencies' inventory adapted from Schumacher (1990) study. The inventory includes 35 items with four subscales that measure the following competencies: leading self and others, effective communication, problem solving, and planning skills. Participants were 436 (279 males and 157 females) students from a higher education institution in Saudi Arabia. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and Cronbach's alpha coefficients were used to provide evidence on the psychometric property of the scale and each subscale. The results showed that the four model factor analysis explained 42% of the total variance. Reliability analyses indicated that the overall Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.94 and alpha for subscales ranged from 0.74 to 0.86. Implications and limitations were highlighted.

The Effect of Parent's Attitudes on the Leadership Behaviors of Students at the Faculty of Sport Sciences

2019

The aim of this study is to explore the effect of parental attitudes of students at the Faculty of Sports Sciences on their leadership behaviors. For data collection, two instruments were used in the current study to explore the leadership behaviors of students and their parental attitudes. These were: 'The Leadership Behavior Scale' which was developed by Hemphill and Coons [8] and adapted into Turkish by Önal [10] and 'The Parental Attitude Scale' which was developed by Kuzgun and Eldeklioğlu [9]. These questionnaires were administered to a total of 590 students consisting of 376 male and 214 female students. For data analysis, the SPSS statistical packet program was used for frequency analysis, and independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA and Tukey test were run to find out the source of the difference among different groups of participants. In addition, correlation analysis was performed to reveal the relationship between the students' leadership behaviors and parental attitudes. The findings of the study showed that there was a statistically significant positive correlation between parental attitudes and leadership behaviors of the participants. Based on this finding, it was revealed that the more the parental attitudes of the participants increased, the more the students' leadership behaviors increased.
