Hazardous waste landfill site selection in Khorasan Razavi Province, Northeastern Iran
Arabian Journal of Geosciences, 2009
The disposal is the final step of any hazardous waste management plan. An inappropriate landfill site may have negative environmental, economical, and ecological impacts. Therefore, landfills should be sited carefully by taking into account various rules, regulations, factors, and constraints. In this study, candidate sites for hazardous landfills in the northeastern Khorasan Razavi province are determined using the integration of geographic information system and landfill susceptibility zonation methods. For this, the inappropriate areas were first removed from the model, and the suitability of remaining regions were evaluated using 15 different criteria in two steps. With this done, nine candidate sites were selected as the most suitable locations. Finally, the selected landfill sites were proposed based on environmental impact assessment (Leopold matrix) and economical studies. This study shows that Maasumabad, Kheirabad, Mayamey, and Yonsi are the best locations for the constitution of landfill in Khorasan Razavi province, respectively.

Environmental Problems of Iranian Landfills at Seaside of Caspian Sea
International Journal of Geomate, 2015
This paper focuses on methods of solids and contained liquids management and as a case study, and evaluates the proposed landfill design in Langerood, a city in north of Iran close to Caspian Sea. In addition, the methods of waste management and disposal, environmental conditions of transport stations, kinds of waste and other influential managing parameters in this region are analysed and several solutions are presented. The amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) collected in the province of Gulan is about 35,000 tonnes/day. This province involves 4% of the total population of Iran and about 0.9% of the area of Iran, while it produces 1.4% of total MSW of Iran. There is no valuable estimation on the amount of waste generated by industrial units. Approximately 90% of MSW are discharged directly into the rivers. In addition to compostable materials, about 14,000 tonnes paper and cardboard, 9,700 tonnes plastic and 2,500 tonnes glass are annually being entered into the MSW of this province. This paper presents specific and general recommendations to enhance the solid waste management in the study region.

This study presents a comprehensive framework for reevaluating the suitability of an old active dumpsite and identifying potential sites in the Abhar region, Iran, through geophysical tomography survey, hydrogeological investigation, and the GIS-based AHP method. The results of 2D geoelectrical tomography demonstrated that the leachate plume, with a concentration depth of ~ 20 m, has not affected the aquifer, which is at the minimum depth of 70 m. Our interpretation of the permeability measurement through Philip's equation reveals that the dumpsite topsoil has a low to middle permeability, ranging from 3 to 5 mm/h. After field investigations, three main criteria and twelve sub-criteria were selected and weighted by the AHP method. Accordingly, a ranked suitability map was prepared using a weighted linear combination method in GIS. The suit-ability map confirms the dumpsite is situated in a moderately suitable class. The most suitable, suitable, moderately suitable, poorly suitable, and least suitable zones cover 4.87%, 20.14%, 34.25%, 37.21%, and 3.72% of the Abhar plain, respectively. We have also defined vacant lands in the eastern and southern parts of the dumpsite for future operations. The method applied in this paper can be used for the suitability evaluation of other underground storage facilities.

Landfill siting is a complicated process because it must combine social, environmental and technical factors. In this study, in order to consider all factors and rating criteria, a combination of geographic information systems and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) was used to determine the best sites for disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Mahshahr County, Iran. In order to the decision making for landfill siting a structural hierarchy formed and the most important criteria: surface water, sensitive ecosystems, land cover, urban and rural areas, land uses, distance to roads, slope and land type were chosen according to standards and regulations. Each criterion was evaluated by rating methods. In the next step the relative importance of criteria to each other was determined by AHP. Land suitability for landfill was evaluated by simple additive weighting method. According to the landfill suitability map, the study area classified to four categories: high, moderate, low and very low suitability areas, which represented 18.6%, 20.3%, 1.6 and 0.8% of the study area respectively. The other 58.7% of the study area was determined to be completely unsuitable for landfill. By considering the parameters, such as the required area for landfill, distance to MSW generation points, and political and management issues, and consulting with municipalities managers in the study area, six sites were chosen for site visiting. The result of field study showed that it is a supplementary, and necessary, step in finding the best candidate landfill site from land with high suitability.

13 Open dumping is the common procedure for final disposal of Municipal Solid Waste in Iran. 14 Several environmental pollutions and land degradation have caused in Iran because of poor 15 planning, insufficient financial resources, lack of rules, guidelines and regulations in MSW 16 management system. In Iran, standards and regulations of environmental issues are not 17 perfectly attended, and evaluation an open dumping can show existing restrictions and 18 troubles in these areas. So recognition of the MSW landfill state is required to prevent 19 environmental problems and the negative environmental impacts. The objective of this work 20 is study the suitability of Tonekabon existing municipal landfill site in the west area of 21 Mazandaran province, northern Iran, and the southern coast of the Caspian Sea using 22 Geographic Information System methods. In order to carry out this evaluation, two guidelines 23 are used, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and Regional screeni...
Landfills Site Selection in Babylon, Iraq
Babylon Governorate is located in the middle of Iraq and includes five major districts called Qadhaa. It occupies an area of 5315 km2 with population of 2,092,998 in 2015. The process of selecting landfill site is considered complicated task related to many factors and regulations. Currently, there is no landfill site in Babylon Governorate that fulfils the scientific and environmental criteria. Therefore, in this study fifteen of suitable criteria were selected. These criteria are: groundwater depth, urban canters, rivers, villages, soil types, elevation, agriculture, roads lands use slope, land use, archaeological sites, power lines, gas pipelines, oil pipelines and railways. Then these criteria were used in the GIS (geographic information system), which has a high ability to manage and analyse various data. In addition, the AHP (analytical hierarchy process) method was used to derive the weightings of criteria through using a matrix of pair-wise comparison. After that the weighted linear combination (WLC) method was used to obtain the suitability index map for candidate landfill sites. Ten suitable candidate sites for landfill were selected (two for each District), where all these sites satisfied the scientific and environmental criteria which were adopted in this study. The areas of the selected sites were adequate to accommodate solid waste from 2020 until 2030.
A new method for environmental site assessment of urban solid waste landfills
Regarding various types of pollutant, waste management requires high attention. Environmental site selection study, prior to landfill operation, and subsequently, monitoring and maintaining of the location, are of foremost points in landfill site selection process. By means of these studies, it is possible to control the undesirable impacts caused by landfills. Study ahead aims at examination of effectiveness of a new method called Monavari 95-2 in landfill site assessment. For this purpose, two landfills Rasht and Andisheh, which are, respectively, located on humid and arid areas, were selected as case studies. Then, the results obtained from both sites were compared with each other to find out the weaknesses and strengths of each site. Compared with others similar methods, much more criteria (53 parameters) can be considered within this method, so the results will be more calculable. According to this method, Rasht landfill (site H) is classified as unacceptable landfill site i.e. there is an urgent need for a new suitable site for landfill, while Andishe Landfill (site D) is ranked as acceptable landfill site but needs environmental management program to handle the existing weaknesses.
Waste management is a complex and detailed process that involves evaluation of certain important factors, such as a geological, geotechnical, hydrological, hydrogeological, climate, urban management, environmental, along with social, cultural, and psychological parameters. Unfortunately, in Iran, there is minimal evaluation of initial parameters and in some cases even don't exist. The purpose of this study is to conduct a landfill site selection based on engineering geological views. For this purpose, the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) methods were used to select a suitable site for disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) for the city of Maragheh, Iran. In order to make decision for landfill site selection, the focus was on multivariable function of the listed criteria. Each of these criteria is classified based on international guidelines (US environmental protection agency and technical committee on geotechnical landfill engineering), field studies, and laboratory tests. Based on the results, Three sites were recommended for municipal solid waste landfill (Sites 'A', 'B' and 'C'). From these sites, sampling and soil mechanics tests (sieve analysis and Atterberg limits) were conducted where categorised according to USCS classification system. Finally, with AHP and MCDM methods the 'Site A' was recommended as the best location for sanitary landfill.
