Impact of Recycled Aggregates on Selected Physical and Mechanical Characteristics of Cement Concrete
Procedia Engineering, 2017
The issue of using construction rubble was recognized in Europe not earlier than in the nineties of the twentieth century. This was due to economic and ecological considerations. However, recycled aggregate is characterized by high volatility of physical and mechanical properties. The quantity and type of various kinds of impurities harmful to the durability of concrete is virtually unpredictable. For over twenty years various organizations in different countries have tried to sort out this problem and possibly unequivocally define the criteria for the suitability of different types of recycled aggregates to the production of concrete. The article presents and compares the most important guidelines, currently in force, regulating the scope of use of recycled aggregates (RILEM as well as Japanese, German and European standards). The article also contains the results and the analysis of comparative studies of selected physical and mechanical characteristics of concrete produced with the use of natural aggregate and concrete produced with the use of recycled aggregate obtained from milling of masonry.

Recycling of construction and demolition waste (CDW) has become a widespread concern in Spain for the last years, as a way to preserve natural resources and achieve a better control of waste disposal sites. Specific applications which make use of mixed recycled aggregates are of great importance, as this types of aggregates constitute the majority of the total production. Structural and non-structural concrete is one of the possible applications, being this the main goal of our study.

The rapid economic growth of countries has led to the construction of new structures and infrastructures. Construction projects use up large quantities of natural resources and produce tones of construction and demolition waste (CDW). Because of its growth, these quantities have increased in the last few years and it has now become necessary to create a sustainable method of development in civil construction. Therefore, utilization of recycled materials in construction projects can be the most promising solution to this problem. The utilization of recycled materials including recycled construction aggregates (RCA) in the pavement industry and asphalt production is particularly very promising as 90% of asphalt is made of aggregates. However, the variability in behavior and performance of RCA used in construction projects indicates the variability in their composition. Therefore, in spite of the awareness of the importance of using RCA and much research being conducted, there is still a need for a deeper study of the composition of the RCA. This paper presents the results of the statistical study and experimental work to evaluate the characteristics of RCA as an alternative for virgin aggregate in the asphalt mixture. To this point, a series of characterization tests were conducted RCA samples collected at different dates.

This paper concerns the recovery of construction and demolition waste as coarse recycled aggregates for concrete. Coarse recycled aggregates may be used as a partial or total replacement of natural aggregates, contributing to the circular economy and minimizing landfill disposals as well as the consumption of natural mineral resources. However, construction and demolition waste is a heterogeneous material with undefined quality and the processing of this waste into recycled aggregates needs to ensure that the recycled aggregates have suitable properties for concrete. This paper summarizes several aspects related to coarse recycled aggregates, specifically addressing: (i) the typical composition of construction and demolition waste; (ii) the influence of different types of constituents on the properties of recycled aggregates and recycled aggregate concrete; (iii) requirements for recycled aggregates to be used in concrete; and (iv) production methods of recycled aggregates. It is argued that coarse recycled aggregates are a suitable construction material with adequate quality, even when common equipment is used in their production and preliminary separation as a key operation for ensuring the quality of the aggregates is recommended.
A Review on Recycled Aggregates for the Construction Industry
American Journal of Civil Engineering and Architecture, 2016
The essence of modern development is closely linked with conservation of natural resources by preventing environmental degradation as construction materials are increasingly judged by their ecological characteristics. Concrete, the most versatile material for construction, is playing a significant role in the growth of infrastructural and industrial segments but it has been claimed that concrete is not an environmentally-friendly material due to its destructive resource consuming nature and the possibly severe environmental impact after its use. It will, however, remain the major construction material being used worldwide. In order to study closely and in brief related studies in the field of recycling of hardened concrete or the use of recycled aggregates this literature review was carried out. Recycled aggregates are still not conventionally used in the construction industry but still a lot of work has been done on recycling of hardened concrete and continuous improvements are req...

This work is focused on the study of valuation of
recycled concrete aggregates, by measuring certain properties of
concrete in the fresh and hardened state. In this study, rheological
tests and physic-mechanical characterization on concretes and
mortars were conducted with recycled concrete whose geometric
properties were identified aggregates. Mortars were elaborated with
recycled fine aggregate (0/5mm) and concretes were manufactured
using recycled coarse aggregates (5/12.5 mm and 12.5/20 mm). First,
a study of the mortars was conducted to determine the effectiveness
of polycarboxylate superplasticizer on the workability of these and
their action deflocculating of the recycled sand. The rheological
behavior of mortars based on fine aggregate recycled was
characterized. The results confirm that the mortars composed of
different fractions of recycled sand...
