The Use and Effects of Smartphones in Higher Education

The purpose of this study is to investigate the use and effects of smartphones on academic staffs at a university level, especially in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We conducted a survey study using questionnaires. The questionnaires were randomly distributed to 66 academic staffs who own a smartphone at the Northern Border University. This study discovers the smartphone had replaced a computer, and an email application was mostly used. The academic staffs also had utilized smartphone as a means for knowledge sharing. Social media applications were greatly used in teaching and learning. Despite the benefits of smartphone use, academic staffs had been negatively affected. Use of Mobile Applications among University Students
Existing research in communication studies focuses on examining the capabilities of smartphone technology. By providing access to the internet, social network services over the years have adapted smartphone usage to enhance the social media experience of their users via mobile applications. Scholars have established researches on behavioral effects of mobile use prior to sleep mostly among young adolescents. None however have aimed to study the mobile users’ self-perception of this behaviour. This study was conducted to investigate and understand what factors motivate students’ usage of smartphones prior to sleep. The study involved 6 Undergraduate students between the ages of 19-21 to participate in semi-structured interviews. Findings suggest that students’ usage of their smartphone is habitual, having no direct correlation with addiction. Participants’ smartphone usage primarily involves using social networking applications to maintain social circles. This research is appropriate for those interested in understanding electronic devices in association to human interactions.

Smartphones ownership amongst the general customer, professionals and even students has grown exponentially. The latent features of smartphones in education somehow support learning activities. This paper aims to situate the evolving communication technology in higher education context. Smartphones like table computers and other mobile devices are evolved pieces of technology that have the potential to support student learning in the classroom. University students can use smartphones to record a lecture, search for definitions, or send notes to absent students, as well as use the medium to collaborate with other students electronically to complete homework assignments (Cheung, 2009). Nevertheless, smartphones also enable the use of social media or social networks by university students that it has somehow became significant to their academic life. Students used social media for a variety of reasons which comprise of study and entertainment purposes as those sites provide a broad range of data which can be retrieved easily and fast (Raut & Patil, 2016). With the increase of social media use by students over past years, there are various impacts, both positive and negative specifically to the students and society in general can be examined.

A systematic random sample of (110) college students (female) aged (18-22) year old, and (15) faculty staff members at the College of Education-female section, Jazan University, was chosen. The study conducted in the academic year (2018). Questionnaire and interviews were used for collecting data. The study sample were asked to express their attitudes towards the usage of mobile phone applications in education. All data were analyzed with the SPSS personal computer program. Appropriate statistics for description (frequencies, percentage, means, standard deviations, and Chi2) were used. The results showed that calculated Chi2 value is bigger than the value of Chi2 derived from statistical tables. Thus, the null hypotheses (H0) rejected. Rejection of the null hypotheses indicates that the difference is significant in favor of the usage of mobile phone applications in the educational process.
Smartphone Use of University Students: Patterns, Purposes, and Situations

In order to integrate smartphones into educational settings effectively, there is need to describe routine use of smartphones by university students in detail. This study aimed to describe smartphone use of university students in a developing country, focusing on the purpose, the patterns and the situations of smartphone use. The participants of this study were 842 university students studying in 101 different universities. A cross-sectional survey method was employed in the study. Regarding use patterns, majority of university students have been using their smartphones for about 3 years, mostly at nights and/or in the evenings, and approximately 5 hours a day. Also, they connect to the Internet about 4 hours via their smartphones a day, and check their smartphones about 32 times a day. Faculty Usage of Social Media and Mobile Devices: Analysis of Advantages and Concerns

This study seeks to understand the perceptions of professors using social media (also called Web 2.0 tools) in the classroom, what kinds of mobile devices are used to access the social media used, and what drives individuals to use them. In addition, it seeks to identify the advantages and concerns faculty has with the use of social media for classroom instruction. Two-Way Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) procedure was used to ascertain whether differences existed between two dependent variables and (a) gender, (b) different academic ranks, and (c) gender *rank to determine if there are any interaction effects between genders regarding the magnitude of their perceptions of advantages and concerns about social media uses for classroom instruction as they migrate through the ranks. Professors, regardless of sex or rank, held statistically the same views of the advantages as well as the concerns related to social media usage in the classroom.
USE OF MOBILE DEVICES BY STUDENTS TO SUPPORT LEARNING IN UNIVERSITIES: A CASE OF MUNI UNIVERSITY
It's a requirement in admission for every student to come with a mobile device for any programme admitted. The main objective of this study was to establish how the students use mobile devices in lecture rooms /classroom this was achieved by answering the following research questions: which mobile devices are owned by students? what are benefits of using mobile devices by students?and how mobile devices are used for learning?Quantitative design was employed using questionnaires containing a five (5) Likert scale items ranging from strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree-strongly disagree and open-ended items was utilized in this study to obtain quantitative information to answer the research questions: A total population of 331 was considered and sample size of 181 was obtained using Krejcie and Morgan table, stratified sampling was used to collect data from each stratum and data was analyzed using SPSS Version 16. The reliability of the data collected was tested using the Cronbach's reliability test coefficient where the overall value of all the options was on average 0.65 which was beyond recommended 0.6 for an instrument to be declared reliable. The findings showed that, 56.2% (91) respondents use smart phones, 40.7 %(66) use Laptops in class and only 1.2 %(2) use kindle in class room while no student indicated that he/she uses Ipad or PDA in classroom or lecture room. In terms of the benefits of using mobile devices, students the following among the top four (4) benefits; easy to access information, storage of information, mobility of the device and use of social media but cost effective and security of information were ranked last. The findings also showed students use mobile devices to access course materials, doing class work, send and receive e-mails and taking and sharing of notes but virtual classroom, discussion forums and using pre-recorded lecturers with PowerPoint were ranked among the last three (3). This study recommends that Smartphone's and mobile devices should be allowed to use by students, lecturer to start virtual classroom, discussion forums and using pre-recorded lecturers with PowerPoint so that the students can also benefit from these functionalities since they were ranked among the last three(3) services not used.

Mobile usage among university students is an essential part of a student’s life nowadays. Students accomplish various tasks on a daily basis using mobile devices. Contacting classmates, professors and friends is done regularly via mobile devices. However the way these tasks are accomplished has changed dramatically in the past five or six years. New mobile technologies such as high speed mobile internet (3G, 4G LTE), the introduction of smartphones backed by hundreds of thousands of mobile applications, have launched a new dimension to how students now use mobile technology. The purpose of this study is to investigate the use patterns and ownership of smartphone apps among students at the Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS) at the South Valley University (SVU), Egypt. This study may help faculty members and students, as well as DLISs in general and SVU"s DLIS, in particular, to understand the nature and purpose of such use. Design/methodology/approach This study used quantitative research methodology in the form of a survey, which was undertaken from February to March 2015. The survey instrument was a self-administrated questionnaire, with a response rate 82.7 per cent (441/533). Findings The findings of this study showed that smartphone users (82.7 per cent) at SVU"s DLIS tended to be junior females. Smartphone non-users (17.3 per cent) tended to be also young females but primarily sophomores. The highest percentage of smartphone users had been using smartphones for four to five years, and the largest number of students was described to be advanced users who heard first about these mobile devices through friends and the Web. Most users had 21 to 25 apps. Social apps were the most popular and included Facebook, e-mail and Twitter. For professional purposes, students used smartphones more for communication purposes than learning purposes. Apps related to educational purposes included Google Mobile, Facebook, e-mail, Twitter, YouTube and Wikipedia Mobile. Students perceived most apps to be easy to use and useful to them. There were a number of uses for socializing including messaging, following the news and playing games. Students had mainly positive attitudes towards apps with a few negative concerns. Almost all students confirmed that they trust most apps. Barriers related to the use of apps included training and lack of awareness. Further research may be needed to specify the relationship between the students" use of these apps and their academic performance. The main tasks done on smartphone devices were mainly for socializing. Students indicated that popular tasks and activities, such as sending and receiving messages, following the news, making communications, making chat, making friends, finding specific information, finding general information, making discussion groups, playing games, completing class assignments, checking materials related to courses, doing business, seeking jobs, watching movies, listening to music and accessing library services are important tasks accomplished by them through the use of these devices. The current study indicated very positive attitudes towards the use of these apps. Student at least agree with the statement that smartphone apps allow for easy dissemination of information, provide too much information, increase the speed of finding information, help communication, convenient, secure, build confident and reduce paper use. However, a large number of students also at least agree with the statement that these apps are time consuming, intimidating, addictive, violate privacy, require high language and technical skills, harmful and frustrating. Almost all students confirmed that they are at least trustful in some apps, such as WhatsApp, e-mail, YouTube, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and Viber. A large number of smartphone users surveyed in this study have been described to make excessive usage of social apps, such as communication apps, messaging/texting apps and social networking sites, which were at the forefront of use. Educational Usage of Mobile Devices: Differences Between Postgraduate and Undergraduate Students

The rapid increase of smartphone usage in recent years has provided students the opportunity to participate in mobile learning (m-learning) anywhere, anytime. Academic institutions are also following this trend to launch many m-learning services. This article investigates the differences of the user needs between undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students though an online survey with 140 Library Information Systems (LIS) subjects in a Japanese university in order to provide solid foundations for future m-learning studies. We find that UG and PG students do not show significant differences in adopting m-learning by smartphones despite the fact that they have different learning patterns. The m-learning frequencies of smartphones generally range from weekly to monthly, where using search engines is the most frequent, and reading academic resources is the least frequent. They tend to use these services for handling their daily routines (such as search engine, social networks) rather than their academic activities (such as using online databases to search for academic materials). Further, the results also show that content displaying issues (e.g., small display screen, text unable to enlarge) are barriers for most subjects in using these m-learning services.
