In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing measures were put into place to flatten the pandemic curve. It was projected older adults were at increased risk for poor psychological and health outcomes resulting from increased social isolation and loneliness. However, little re-search has supported this projection among community-dwelling older adults. While growing body of research has examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on older adults, there is a paucity of qualitative research that captures the lived experience of community-dwelling older adults. The current study aimed to better understand the lived experience of community-dwelling older adults during the first six months of the pandemic. Semi-structured one on one interviews were conducting with independent living older adults aged 65 years and older. After achieving saturation, 22 interview were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Following a recursive process, two overarching themes emerged from th...

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze changes in the daily routine and life perceptions of older adults due to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study conducted with 338 older adults (93 men and 238 women) residing in southern Brazil. An online questionnaire consisting of 20 questions was created using the Google Forms platform and was distributed to older adults (> 60 years of age) during the isolation period caused by the coronavirus disease pandemic. Data analysis was conducted through Student's-t and χ2 tests. RESULTS: Our results showed a significant association between social isolation and sex (p < 0.01), revealing that women experienced higher levels of social isolation than men. We observed that 82.21% of the older adults participating in this study reported changes in their social routines during the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: During this period of extended social isolation, women reported more negative effects than men.

Introduction: From the start of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in 2020 to the present, older people have been the worst affected among all age groups. This study was conducted to examine thoroughly the perceptions and experiences of older people regarding the COVID-19 outbreak. Materials and Methods: A qualitative study was conducted using a semistructured, in-depth interview method with 16 older people living in the east of Turkey. The interviews were conducted through the mobile application WhatsApp, as the older people were in the risk group for infection. The sample group was reached using the snowball method. When the data obtained from the participants reached the saturation level, two more interviews were conducted, and then the interviews were ended. After the recorded interviews were transcribed, they were subjected to conventional content analysis. Results: Four main themes emerged from the interviews in line with the purpose of this study. These themes are The Meaning of COVID-19, Outcomes of COVID-19, Need for Support and Resources, and Attitudes toward Vaccination. Conclusion: It was determined that the older people experienced fear during the COVID-19 pandemic; the social restrictions affected them psychologically, physiologically, and economically and they could not get enough support and felt lonely in this process; but nevertheless, they were hopeful about the vaccine. To address these findings, this study suggested support for home care of older people and the development of psychosocial and economic support programs for them.

As Iran was affected by COVID-19 pandemic, the elderly population soon were told to self-isolate for a very long time. We aimed to identify the coverage, efficacy, and integrity of self-isolation and its predictors in the Iranian older adults (≥60 years) from February 19 to 19 March 2020. The phenomenon of aging requires a series of adjustments by individuals to the new nuances of everyday life. Aging represents a gradual, dynamic, natural and inevitable process that occurs throughout life. This study was carried out with the purpose of exploring the social representations built around the quality of life of older people who participate in sports workshops oriented around physical activity and health. The study was developed in 2017 during the months of August-November, and it is a qualitative investigation that used conventional content analysis, with 30 older adults from the Maule region, Chile, participating in the investigation. Data were collected through four focus groups, which were recorded, transcribed, and then analyzed with a content analysis approach, by means of the Nvivo 10 software. The data analysis allowed the emergence of two main categories of physical activity and quality of life, which are displayed through six subcategories: socialization, new learnings, role of the teacher, benefits, diversity of exercise and physical difficulties. The results showed that older people highlight the need to generate socialization processes through participation in sports-recreational workshops, recognizing the role of the teacher in learning new activities and exercises. On the other hand, they highlight the benefits it generates for their health and quality of life, the systematic practice of physical activity, social participation, coexistence and interaction with other people, which allows for greater independence and autonomy. Therefore, it is suggested that more qualitative studies should be conducted in this age group, with the aim of understanding how older people live this fundamental stage of their lives.
