The Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic on the Tourism Development

The COVID -19 pandemic made 2020 a devastating year for the tourism industry. To stop the spreading of the virus the restrictive measures such as lockdowns, have affected many economies, from which tourism suffers directly and greatly. The purpose of this study is to analyze the state of tourism at the international level and tourism in the Republic of Serbia during the pandemic, by examining the tourist arrivals and overnight stays in 2020. At the international level, the loss in tourism arrivals and receipts experience even the leading regions in tourism. Also in Serbia, there is a noticeable decrease in foreign tourist arrivals and overall tourist arrivals in 2020.

Influence of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Tourism in European Countries: Cluster Analysis Findings

This article aims to give an overview of tourism at the time of the global crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to assess the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on European countries, the Systemic Literature Review (SLR) as well as Our World in Data (2021) and EUROSTAT (2021) secondary data were used. In order to group countries with respect to changes taking place in tourism, Ward’s cluster analysis was applied. After verifying the available data, 31 European countries were eventually selected for the analysis. The application of Ward’s method led to four groups of countries being created that are most similar in terms of changes in the tourism sector between 2019 and 2020. The first cluster comprised eight countries with the highest average rate of restrictiveness. This study aims to explore the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the components of the international tourism (the international tourists arrivals, the international tourists receipts, Hospitality and restaurants, The employment in tourism.); to achieve this purpose, we divide the paper into two axes, the first is devoted to the literature review of the issue, while the second is devoted to studying a set of studies and statistics issued by a group of the international reports. Finally, the initial results at the beginning of this pandemic indicate a decrease in the international flows of tourists by about 30% in the first semester of 2020 relative to 2019 as a result of the quarantine, which will negatively affect all components of the international tourism sector.

The process of globalization has increased interdependence between countries. The COVID-19 pandemic, which broke out in December 2019, has been effective worldwide. The pandemic directly affected the country's economies, leading to a global recession. Tourism is one of the sectors directly affected by the economic downsides. The decline in tourist mobility in the international arena has led to a decrease in demand and unemployment in the tourism sector and its associated sub-sectors. This study aims to reveal how tourism activities are affected by the pandemic in Turkey, which has an important place in world tourism. The study analyzed the scientific literature that, together with the COVID-19 crisis, provided a general profile of the crisis process in the tourism sector. Economic difficulties of Turkish tourism, their indirect effects on a macroeconomic level, and tourism-related sectors were examined. Various solutions and recommendations have been made to get out of the crisis. Guiding assessments have also been made for future academic studies.

Overcoming the Negative Consequences of Coronavirus Pandemic on Tourism: The European Union Experience

This article aims at analyzing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the tourism activity of the European Union (EU) countries, as well as the link between the synthetic index of tourism competitiveness and the possibility of supporting tourism in times of crisis. In order to demonstrate this connection, but also the other correlations that present the overall situation of tourism from 2019 to 2022, the specialized literature that dealt with this common issue worldwide, and especially at the EU level, was reviewed; similarly, specialized statistical sources, as well as qualitative and quantitative research methods were also synthetized. From the analysis of the four hypotheses (of which only three were validated) the authors conclude that: the connection between GDP and the number of tourists is a direct one and of medium intensity, the developed countries managing to support their tourist activity even in less favorable conditions; the association between the index of competitiveness in tourism and the arrivals of tourists is a direct one, of medium intensity, which demonstrates that the index of competitiveness in tourism influences the flows of tourists, especially towards the developed countries; the third hypothesis correlates GDP per capita with the number of tourists, but the results did not highlight the existence of a link between these two variables, which led to the rejection of this hypothesis; the last researched and confirmed aspect is the degree of influence for the vaccination rate in the receiving countries and the number of international tourist arrivals, thus, the large number of vaccinated residents encouraging tourist arrivals.

International and European tourism underwent a constant and almost unprecedented development in the last decades. In 2018, international tourism displayed the ninth year of consecutive growth that exceeded even the increase of world GDP according to UNWTO data. This ascending trend continued in 2019, and the perspectives were promising according to predictions. The beginning of 2020 brought with it the outspread of a global pandemic and one of the most sensitive industries proved to be the industry of tourism and travel. The pandemic is from this perspective an opportunity for reconsidering the criteria for ensuring sustainable tourism while it proved the frailty of the entire tourism sector.
