Tidal energy: A solution to energy crisis in coastal area of Bangladesh

2014 International Conference on Electrical Engineering and Information & Communication Technology, 2014

Around the globe the most concerning discussions are on environmental situation and energy crisis. High price along with increasing scarcity of fuel is making decision makers to think about renewable energy. It is high time Bangladesh Government gave much attention towards renewable energy. Government has already been working on solar energy and biogas so that they become popular. In this paper, we present tidal energy of Bangladesh as another potent and promising source of renewable energy. Encompassed by the Bay of Bengal to the south, this country has considerable scope to develop tidal power. Here in this paper we show tidal data of 6 different sites of Bangladesh to propose that Bangladesh has real potential of using tidal sources for power generation which should be properly utilized. Installation of tidal power plants can ensure the best use of tidal energy available in Bangladesh to solve the energy crisis of the country.

Feasibility Assesment of Tidal Current along the Bay of Bengal to Generate Electricity as a Renewable Energy

Electricity is the pinnacle of human civilization. At present, the growing concerns over significant climate change have intensified the importance of use of renewable energy technologies for electricity generation. The interest is primarily due to better energy security, smaller environmental impact and providing a sustainable alternative compared to the conventional energy sources. Solar, wind, biomass, tidal, and wave power are some of the most reliable sources of renewable energy. Ocean approximately holds 2×10 3 TW of energy and has the largest renewable energy resource on the planet. Various forms constitute ocean energy namely, encompassing tides, ocean circulation, surface waves, salinity and thermal gradients. Ocean tide in particular, associates both potential and kinetic energy. The study is focused on the latter concept that deals with energy due to tidal current. Tidal currents generate kinetic energy that can be extracted by marine energy devices and converted into transmittable electricity form. The study analyses the extracted tidal currents from numerical model works at several locations in the Bay of Bengal. Based on current magnitudes , directions and available technologies the most fitted locations were adopted and possible annual generation capacity was estimated. The paper also examines the future prospects of tidal current energy along the Bay of Bengal (BoB) and establishes a constructive approach that could be adopted in future developments.

Perspective and Challenge of Tidal Power in Bangladesh

TELKOMNIKA Indonesian Journal of Electrical Engineering, 2014

Tidal power can play a vital role in integrating as new source of renewable energy to the off-grid power connection in isolated areas, namely Sandwip, in Bangladesh. It can reduce the present energy crisis and improve the social, environmental and economic perspective of Bangladesh. Tidal energy is becoming popular around the world due to its own facilities. The development of any country largely depends on energy sector improvement. Lack of energy sector is because of hampering progress of any country development, and the energy sector will be stable by only depend on sustainable energy sources. Renewable energy having environmental friendly is the only sustainable solution of secure energy system. Bangladesh has a huge potential of tidal power at different locations, but effective measures on this issue have not been considered sincerely. This paper summarizes the current energy scenario, and Bangladesh can produce power approximately 53.19 MW across the country to reduce the growing energy demand utilizing tidal energy as well as it is shown that Sandwip is highly potential place to produce tidal power, which is estimated approximately 16.49 MW by investing only US $10.37 million. Besides this, cost management for tidal power plant has been also discussed.

Development of a prototype model for assessing tidal energy extraction potential

— With the rising concerns over global climate change associated with rapid depletion of limited fossil fuel resources, worldwide attention has intensified towards the potentials and possibilities of renewable energy sources. In the context of Bangladesh, among multifarious sources of renewables (solar, wind, biomass, tidal and wave power and ocean thermal energy) harnessing of energy from ocean tides, that cogitates both kinetic and potential energy, is a promising option. The former deals with tidal current energy conversion technologies while the latter concept focuses on the tidal barrage approach-similar to hydropower technique. This paper presents an assessment of the potential of tidal barrage technology through the development of a laboratory scale prototype model. The prototype energy extractor is constructed to study and verify the one-way generation method of tidal barrage technology. The model is scaled down to actual generation. A laboratory flume is used to generate a hydraulic head across a sluice gate, considering the upstream as basin side and downstream as the seaside. Water on the basin side is retained by the sluice, creating maximum head difference and thereby generates electricity while traversing through the turbine and rotating the generator. The generated power in the downstream end is measured by an ammeter. The amount of energy generated through the turbine is then compared to the theoretical energy generation. The findings of this study are discussed in relation to the prospects of tidal potential energy and identifies this technology as a preferable option for electricity generation in the suitable locations of the Bay of Bengal.

Possibilities Of Tidal Power In Bangladesh

International Conference of Mechanical Engineering 2015 (ICME), 2015

From the beginning, fossil fuel (Gas, Coal, Oil etc.) is being mainly used to generate electricity. But it is not far off days that fossil fuel would be a story or museum article. So, in futurepower crisis will be a common problem all over the world. Bangladesh is not out of it. To solve this problem government is trying to find alternative way and other different policies. These policies meet up power crisis temporarily, but not permanently. So our government is looking up to the alternative source like renewable energy. Renewable energies are solar, wind, tidal, geothermal etc. Among these tidal wave is more predictable. The tide closely follows the moon during its rotation around the earth, creating diurnal tide and ebb cycles.During high tide, water can be trapped in the coastal basin and this water head can be used to drive a turbine and produce large amount of power which is very reliable and continuous.Bangladesh has good potential for harnessing wave power from the Bay of Bengal. In our research tidal power would be economical and very low compared to most other power plants for Bangladesh. So our main objective is to introduce tidal power as an alternative source to meet up power crisis of Bangladesh.

Implementation of Tidal Energy in Indian Coastline

International Journal of Progressive Research in Science and Engineering, 2021

In this project we are going to take deep look on tidal energy in the coastal line of India, about how tidal energy is a solution for our currents situation in this world with this climate and how tidal energy works it's basically deep knowledge on tidal energy in the basis of civil engineering work. The development of renewable energy around the world has been given increased importance due to concerns regarding energy supply and climate change. Wave and tidal energy are very important components of the renewable energies that can be extracted from the oceans. Different locations around the India have good natural conditions for one of these forms of energy, with some locations even being suitable for both.

ESTIMATION OF VARIOUS TIDAL PARAMETERS AND POSSIBILITY FOR HARNESSING TIDAL ENERGY ALONG THE SOUTHEAST COASTAL AREA OF KARACHI, PAKISTAN

The understanding of the sea tides and related phenomena are essential for estimating general oceanography parameters for any coast and also to calculate and plan harnessing of tidal energy for electricity generation. Energy consumption and demand in Pakistan, especially in the coastal city of Karachi has increased drastically over past decade and this situation particularly becomes worst in summer. This leads to a situation of increase in unit price of electricity for domestic and commercial users. To overcome this problem, a study is conducted with the help of Pakistan Navy hydrography department, in which first time real time tide related data along the Karachi coast (24 o 48'N 66 o 58'E) located on the southeastern coastline of Pakistan has been acquired for the period of three months during summer of 2014. In this research study an attempt has been made to estimate various essential tidal energy harnessing factors using tide related data.

TIDAL ENERGY: A REVIEW

The phenomenon of rise and fall in the ocean waters, called tides, is due to the attractive forces between the celestial bodies; Sun, Earth and the Moon. When the ocean water rises to a maximum extent, it is called spring tide and when they fall off to the lowest possible extent, it is called neap tide. With progress in technology, the usage of electric and electronic devices is exponentially increasing and there is a need to produce extra power other than the existing, in order to meet the future demands. Tidal energy can be considered as one of the best existing source of renewable energies. Unlike the wind, solar, thermal energy etc., tidal energy is something that has a long term perspective and it can be forecasted more accurately. Tidal energy is clean and not depleting. Because of these features it is unique and suitable to use it as a power generating source in the future. There are various types of tidal power plants across the world with varying tidal elevation. Also, the method of conversion of tidal energy into electrical energy is site specific. But generally, the method followed for extracting energy from tides is similar to the conventional hydroelectric power plants. In this paper, the tides at some locations across the world and along the Indian coast, tidal power plants across the world, resource allocation of tidal power plants, advantages and disadvantages of tidal power will be reviewed from the literature.
