Extension criteria for homogeneous Sobolev spaces of functions of one variable
arXiv:1812.00817v2, 2018
For each p > 1 and each positive integer m we give intrinsic characterizations of the restriction of the homogeneous Sobolev space L^m_ p(R) to an arbitrary closed subset E of the real line. We show that the classical one dimensional Whitney extension operator is "universal" for the scale of L^m_p(R) spaces in the following sense: for every p ∈ (1, ∞] it provides almost optimal L_m_p-extensions of functions defined on E. The operator norm of this extension operator is bounded by a constant depending only on m. This enables us to prove several constructive L^m_p-extension criteria expressed in terms of m th order divided differences of functions.
A new characterization of the Sobolev space
Studia Mathematica, 2003
The purpose of this paper is to provide a new characterization of the Sobolev space W 1,1 (R n). We also show a new proof of the characterization of the Sobolev space W 1,p (R n), 1 ≤ p < ∞, in terms of Poincaré inequalities.
A new characterization of Sobolev spaces on {\mathbb{R}^{n}}$$
Mathematische Annalen, 2012
In this paper we present a new characterization of Sobolev spaces on R n . Our characterizing condition is obtained via a quadratic multiscale expression which exploits the particular symmetry properties of Euclidean space. An interesting feature of our condition is that depends only on the metric of R n and the Lebesgue measure, so that one can define Sobolev spaces of any order of smoothness on any metric measure space.
Sobolev functions on closed subsets of the real line: long version
arXiv:1808.01467v2, 2018
For each p > 1 and each positive integer m we give intrinsic characterizations of the restriction of the Sobolev space W^m_p(R) and homogeneous Sobolev space L^m_p(R) to an arbitrary closed subset E of the real line. In particular, we show that the classical one dimensional Whitney extension operator is "universal" for the scale of L^m_p(R) spaces in the following sense: for every p ∈ (1, ∞] it provides almost optimal L^m_p-extensions of functions defined on E. The operator norm of this extension operator is bounded by a constant depending only on m. This enables us to prove several constructive W^m_p- and L^m_p-extension criteria expressed in terms of m-th order divided differences of functions.
Whitney-type extension theorems for jets generated by Sobolev functions
Advances in Mathematics, 2017
Let L^m_p(R^n), 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞, be the homogeneous Sobolev space, and let E ⊂ R^n be a closed set. For each p > n and each non-negative integer m we give an intrinsic characterization of the restrictions {D^αF|_E : |α| ≤ m} to E of m-jets generated by functions F ∈ L^m_{p +1}(R^n). Our trace criterion is expressed in terms of variations of corresponding Taylor remainders of m-jets evaluated on a certain family of “well separated” two point subsets of E. For p = ∞ this result coincides with the classical Whitney–Glaeser extension theorem for m-jets. Our approach is based on a representation of the Sobolev space L^m_{p +1}(R^n), p > n, as a union of C^{m,(d)}(R^n)-spaces where d belongs to a family of metrics on R^n with certain “nice” properties. Here C^{m,(d)}(R^n) is the space of C^m-functions on R^n whose partial derivatives of order m are Lipschitz functions with respect to d. This enables us to show that, for every non-negative integer m and every p ∈ (n, ∞), the very same classical linear Whitney extension operator as in [31] provides an almost optimal extension of m-jets generated by L^m_{p +1}-functions.
Approximation by Lipschitz Functions in Abstract Sobolev Spaces on Metric Spaces
2014
We prove that the density of locally Lipschitz functions in a global Sobolev space based on a Banach function space implies the density of Lipschitz functions, with compact support in a given open set, in the corresponding Sobolev space with zero boundary values. In the case, when the Banach function space is a Lebesgue space, we recover some density results of Björn, Björn and Shanmugalingam (2008). Our results require neither a doubling measure nor the validity of a Poincaré inequality in the underlying metric measure space.

The study of the local properties of solutions to linear and nonlinear pde's arising from non-commuting vector fields has received considerable attention over the last fifteen years. On the other hand, little is known concerning boundary value problems for such classes of equations and the corresponding analytic and geometric properties of solutions. In this paper we address some questions which are of interest in this context: approximation of Sobolev functions by functions which are smooth up to the boundary of a domain, global Morrey type embeddings, extension properties of Sobolev spaces. Our main results are Theorem 1.7, Theorem 1.8 and Theorem 1.10. To develop our study we also establish a characterization of those functions which are Lipschitz continuous with respect to a given Carnot-Carath6odory metric. An interesting consequence of such a characterization is the existence of appropriate cut-off functions supported in metric balls.
Sobolev spaces on an arbitrary metric space
1996
We define Sobolev space J V ' ,~ for 1 < p < (x, on an arbitrary metric space with finite diameter and equipped with finite, positive Bore1 measure. In the Euclidean case it coincides with standard Sobolev space. Several classical imbedding theorems are special cases of general results which hold in the metric case. We apply our results to weighted Sobolev space with Muckenhoupt weight.
DEFINITIONS OF SOBOLEV CLASSES ON METRIC SPACES

There have been recent attempts to develop the theory of Sobolev spaces W1;pon metric spaces that do not admit any differentiable structure. We prove thatcertain definitions are equivalent. We also define the spaces in the limiting casep = 1.1. Introduction.Let\Omegaae IRnbe an open set. By the classical Sobolev spaceW1;p(\Omega\Gamma we mean the Banach space of those p-summable functions whose distributionalgradients
