A Comparative Study of Pid Controller Tuning Techniques for Time Delay Processes
2019
The Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers are used in process/plant for controlling their parameters such as thermal or, electrical conductivity. By adjusting three parameters of PID controller, both transient and steady response can be improved, and better output can be obtained. There are many PID controller tuning techniques available in the literature and designing PID controllers for small delay processes with specified gain and phase margin is a well-known design technique. If the gain margin and phase margin are not specified, the system may not be optimum. A system with large gain and phase margins is more robust and gives better performance. When the system is robust, there will be no effect of slight changes in system parameters on the system performance. This paper describes a comparative analysis, among different types of tuning techniques available for first order plus delay time systems (FOPDT) on the basis of the various time integral performance criteria...
OPTIMIZATION AND DESIGNING OF PID, FUZZY & PID-FUZZY CONTROLLER
2014
Abstract- Measuring the flow of liquid is a critical need in many industrial plants. The aim of this paper is to do the comparative study of conventional PID, fuzzy logic controller and PID-Fuzzy controller in the area of liquid flow control. In this paper, performance analysis of conventional PID, fuzzy logic and PID-Fuzzy has been done by the use of MATLAB and simulink and in the end comparison of various time domain parameter is done to prove that the PID-Fuzzy logic controller has small overshoot and fast response as compared to PID controller. PID controller is the most IJSER widely used control strategy in industry. The popularity of PID controller can be attributed partly to their robust performance and partly to their functional simplicity. In this paper, the response of the PID and PD controller is oscillatory which damage the system. But the response of the fuzzy logic controller AND PID-Fuzzy is free from these dangerous oscillation in transient period. Hence the Fuzzy lo...
Design of Different Fuzzy Controllers for Delayed Systems
Abstract—Controller may be conventional or intelligent. In the intelligent controller human intelligence is embed with the help of certain soft computing algorithms, or otherwise. This paper addresses the performance evaluation of different conventional and intelligent controllers implemented with an objective to have a good time response. Different types of fuzzy logic controllers were considered along with the example systems having a time delay. The fuzzy logic controllers considered are: PI-like fuzzy logic controller (FLC), gain scheduled PI-like FLC and a self-tuning PI-like FLC. In this work the tuning parameters for the FLC based control system were Ke, Kce, Ku. The optimized values of tuning parameters were achieved from the optimization of Integral of Square of Error (ISE) by running a PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) program. The effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy logic controllers was demonstrated through simulation of the methods applied to different example systems. A of these controllers is also given. The performance assessment of the studied controllers is based on transient response. By comparison the performances, it was found that the self-tuning PI-like FLC performed better than the gain scheduled PI-like FLC, but needs an extra set of inference rules for the online tuning of updating factor.analysed.
Two Degree of Freedom PID Controller in Time Delay System using Hybrid Controller Model
International Journal of Automation and Control, 2018
In the paper, a hybrid method based two-degree of freedom (2-DOF) PID controller is proposed for tuning the time delay system. The hybrid technique is the combination of fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and gravitational search algorithm (GSA). Here, the GSA is utilised for generating the logic rules of FLC. The 2-DOF proportional integral and derivative (PID) controller ensures highly efficient disturbance rejection and reliable performance. Here, tuning of a 2-DOF PID controller with a time delay system design achieves a high performance for a wide range. For the automatic tuning process, the parameters of time delays system is predicted and tuned optimally in the short period of time. The first order time delay system is tuned and the stability parameters such as small overshoot, settling time and rising time has been achieved. From the results, it is noted that, proposed controller provides enhanced results for the reference tracking and disturbance rejection operations. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed technique is demonstrated through the MATLAB/Simulink platform and the performance is tested and compared with the existing controller tuning methods such as FLC technique with genetic algorithm (GA) and artificial neural network (ANN) techniques.

This paper presents an approach of stabilization and control of time invariant linear system of an arbitrary order that include several time delays. In this work, the stability is ensured by PI, PD and PID controller. The method is analytical and needs the knowledge of transfer function parameters of the plant.
PID controller design for time delay systems using genetic algorithms
In this paper, stabilizing regions of a PID controller applied to a class of time delay systems are computed using parametric methods. A necessary condition is used to obtain the admissible ranges of proportional and derivative gains. Then, for a fixed value of one of these parameters within this admissible range, stabilizing regions in the space of the remaining two parameters are determined. Stabilization being the most basic requirement in any controller design problem, once this property is guaranteed we can search among these stabilizing controllers those that satisfy other performance specifications. This step is carried out using the genetic algorithm optimization method. Time domain measures of the closed loop system such as maximum percent overshoot, rise time and settling time are minimized using genetic algorithms and the stabilizing regions of the PID controller values. Examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach.
Improved analytical PID controller design for the second order unstable process with time delay
Computer Aided Chemical Engineering, 2007
The design of the PID controller cascaded with first order filter has been proposed for the second order unstable time delay processes. The design algorithm is based on the IMC criterion which has single tuning parameter to adjust the performance and robustness of the controller. The setpoint filter is used to diminish the overshoot in servo response. The simulation results of the suggested method are compared with recently published tuning methods to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method. For the reasonable comparison the controllers are tuned to have the same degree of robustness by the measure of maximum sensitivity (Ms). A guideline is also provided for the ease of the selection of closed-loop time constant (λ).
A simple method of tuning PID controller for Integrating First Order Plus time Delay Process
2016
A simple method is proposed to design a PID controller for Integrating First Order Plus Time Delay system. Design is simple compared to the other tuning methods. It has been proposed for the pneumatic control system based on the method of gain scheduling. The performance of the controller is measured by the simulation and it is compared with the other two tuning methods which is Skogested [1] and Shinskey [2]. Simulation results shows that the proposed method has lesser error ISE and IAE than the other two methods. Disturbance rejection is also good in the proposed method. INTRODUCTION PID controller design based on stability analysis, constant open loop transfer function, pole placement method, stable inverse of the model and direct synthesis method has been proposed. In all the above methods the design procedure is somewhat complicated. A simple method is proposed for First Order Plus Time Delay system by using the method of gain scheduling [3]. But PID controller for Integrating ...
ABSTRACT: PID controllers have found wide application in process control of time delay systems. The classical control methods designed with conventional PID controllers usually result in overshoot, significant reaction and stabilizing times in regards to optimal performance requirements. In this paper we have proposed the application of nonlinear fuzzy PID controller as an intelligent controller, in the temperature control process of a laboratory oven. The process of temperature control is modelled as a first order plus time delay (FOPDT) process. The performance of the proposed control system with nonlinear fuzzy PID algorithm is analyzed through the step response characteristics, and comparison of the proposed approach with the cases when classical PID controllers are applied, is also provided. From the obtained results, we conclude that the nonlinear fuzzy PID controller achieves better control performance in time delay processes comparing to the classical methods.
Fuzzy Logic Controller Design for First Order Time Delay Systems
International Journal for Research in Applied Science & Engineering Technology (IJRASET), 2022
In this paper, a Fuzzy Logic Controller for reducing the time delay (Dead time) is designed. The main purpose of this work is to build a unique FLC which controls the time delay occurring in industries. In most of the industries for controlling time delay PI and PID controllers are used, but when they are compared to FLC the performance parameters such as response time, overshoot is less and accurate in fuzzy. Even it is showed that FLC reduces the Steady state error. Overall, it shows that effect of Fuzziness is more accurate than that of PI and PID controllers. I.
