11β-Hydroxylase Deficiency (original) (raw)

Encyclopedia of Endocrine Diseases, 2004

Abstract

11β-Hydroxylase enzymes CYP11B1 and CYP11B2 catalyze the final biosynthetic steps in the production of cortisol and aldosterone. Deficiency of CYP11B1 is the second most common cause of congenital adrenal hyperplasia, causing virilization and, in many cases, hypertension. CYP11B2 deficiency is characterized by a neonatal salt-wasting syndrome without virilization.
