When speaking about The Future Site we presume that in future a site will be different from the present building site. We take it for granted that almost every thing in our modern world is subject to permanent change. But to develop a vision on how that future site will look like it is necessary to develop first a vision on how our world will change in the near future. Changes on building sites are like many things a consequence of a changing world. To state it more specifically: the changes on the building sites will be driven by changes in our culture, our life style, and prosperity, and also but not exclusively by developments in knowledge and technology. The most important drivers for change identified in this paper are the changing values of society. Both legislative and regulatory authorities as well as the end-users of the products of the construction industry are forcing the industry to another way of producing and delivering buildings. As a result the construction process h...
A Review of Advancements in Robotic and Sensor-based Technologies in Construction Sector
European Journal of Engineering and Technology Research, 2022
The study explores recent innovations in robotic and sensor-based technologies that are spearheading advancements in the construction sector to achieve improvements in construction quality, efficiency, and safety. Automation in construction, although coined as a concept in 1980s, has witnessed minimal progress in the level of application. The study attempts to identify issues constraining adoption of automation in the sector, the recent developments in technologies and their scope in construction, their applications and impacts, and way forward. The role of robotics in various stages of construction and its impact on a wider scale has been identified and discussed. The evolution of Building Information Modeling (BIM) has transitioned it into being an efficient mediator in the construction process with novel concepts such as 4D and 5D BIM and Building Knowledge Management. Various sensor technologies, functioning at diverse scales, have found wide-ranging applications on construction...

Masonry is an important, traditional and conservative aspect of UK building activity. This mainly involves the use of bonded brick and block units which have significant dimensional tolerances and are easily damaged. Takinq these factors into account, automation of masonry construction cannot be interpreted as being a simple pick and place operation. Duality control of the supply material must be included, and assembly performed on an intellegent basis. Though lacking performance speed, satisfactory damage detecting image processing algorithms have been established as part of the quality control provision and a high level programming approach has been adopted towards the provision of machine intelligence. Dry wall constructions have been made by the experimental masonry building robot which on completion will also perform bonded construction.
Robotics in the construction industry: state of the art and future opportunities
35th International Symposium on Automation and Robotics in Construction (ISARC), 2018
This paper discusses the results of a survey regarding state of the art and possible future opportunities for the application of robotic technologies in the construction industry. The survey was conducted by submitting two distinct questionnaires to Arup's1 most experienced technical and business leaders. The first questionnaire was designed in order to understand the state of the art of robotic technologies in the construction industry, while the second one aimed at identifying promising application scenarios from both the industry and the research point of view. The paper discusses how the questionnaires have been designed and presents the corresponding results.
